CLAW Gear – Merino Seamless Baselayer Series

During IWA 2023, Austria’s CLAW Gear unveiled their Merino Seamless Baselayer Series, a newly developed line of base layers made in the EU. They collaborated with European military alpine specialists to create this series, which is designed to serve as a foundation for layering clothing, particularly for military and law enforcement contexts. Their primary focus during development was achieving ideal moisture management, which we accomplished by incorporating ventilation zones into the design.

Are these flame resistant or a poly blend?

    • rob c says:

If you actually read the first line, it says merino

      • Naut says:

if you would have the slightest expirience, you wouldnt try to make fun and actually get the question if its 100% merino or a poly blend! STFU

@Bob: Clawgear is a really cheap manufacture, I wouldn’t recommend them at all

What percentage of a garment needs to be Merino in order to still be FR? I’ve seen 25% still listed as a Merino baselayer with no claims to FR properties.

CLAW doesn’t have the material composition listed on their site, and the Baselayer FR section does not also include the Merino products. The socks are 50% Merino but the content isn’t listed on their seamless line. Bob’s question is valid.

If I may provide some information on this subject and attempt to address some of the questions/points in the thread.

The CLAWGEAR seamless line is in fact a Merino & polyamide blend. This was chosen to provide not only durability, but also a level of protection that 100% Merino does not provide. By using a polyamide fibre in the knit, we add a higher tenacity fibre that has been tested in laboratories to mitigate secondary splinters and sand particles in a blast situation. 100% Merino, as a more delicate, fibre does not provide this.

On the point of the FR properties, the seamless line by CLAWGEAR are not classified as flame resistant or flame retardant. Please note the difference between the two descriptions. Merino wool does indeed have “Flame Resistant” properties (melt, stick, etc), but it is not “Flame Retardant”. To achieve this, very specific test and evalaution must be carried out including testing at various oxygen levels. CLAWGEAR does indeed have Flame Retardant products and you will here about our newest certified AGNI materials first on Soldier Systems when they are available.

The lack of information on our website is indeed a serious omission and I have taken this up with our online team.

On the final point of CLAWGEAR as a cheap brand! Any reader of Soldier Systems that happens to be in the area of our Austrian headquarters can reach out and I will be more than happy to host a visit and correct your thinking.
