Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth Renames Fort Liberty to Fort Roland L. Bragg

While flying aboard a C-17 from Joint Base Andrews to Stuttgart on February 10, 2025, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum renaming Fort Liberty in North Carolina to Fort Roland L. Bragg. The new name pays tribute to PFC Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero who earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his exceptional courage during the Battle of the Bulge. This change underscores the installation’s legacy of recognizing those who have demonstrated extraordinary service and sacrifice for the nation.

Too easy. Return all bases to their original reconciliation names

    Why not Benavidez or Shughart?

    That’s some 4D chess.

Having previously enjoyed suffering and military peculiar maturation @ Bragg.. to be honest.. the origin of name was lost on me.. but not the enduring affection to the time spent or the brothers made. I appreciate the reversion to “Bragg” as it is a cultural bond through generations of service members.

I’m good w/ Bragg, as iconoclastic to generations.

When I was first assigned there in 1990 I ended up at the flag pole over by the Butner Road gate (no gate back then) and I read the plaque which gave a short bio of Braxton Bragg. At the time I was like, “why is a post full of paratroopers named after a Confederate artillery general?” But, I let it go. I figured the Fort was designated before there were paratroopers and we just sort of happened to the place. Well, Fort Bragg is known for SF and the Airborne. It’s rare that you jump out of planes in the Army or Air Force and aren’t assigned there at least once. I was, in both services.

I really dont think the majority of folks ever stopped calling it Bragg

Great. I understand the sentiment behind the 2023 name change… but I do not feel that, over the years after Vietnam, these names have been any kind of impediment to Black recruits. So, it was expensive to the taxpayer and stupid. Legacy matters. Benning is next.
