DSEI 17 – Thales Launches F90 Modular Bullpup Rifle

Based on the F90 Austeyr rifle, the F90 Modular Bullpup Rifle, offers a couple of upgrades. In addition to user swappable upper receiver groups, 14″, 16″ and 20″, the gas piston has been modified in order to pass the USSOCOM over the beach test.

You’ll note Picatinny rails at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 O’clock on the rail.  They’ve also integrated multiple  QD points on either side of the lower receiver.

By now, you’ve noticed that the F90MBR will accept NATO STANAG magazines.

Another major change is the ambidextrous magazine release just in front of the trigger although the weapon retains the rear mag release just aft of the magazine well.

In order to accommodate NATO STANAG magazines, the barrel interface has been modified slightly from the F90. I asked about M855A1 compatibility and was assured that their feedramps will accommodate its use.

You’ll also note a full range of accessories for this weapon system.

The hopes of every Aussie infantry soldier to move an AR platform are now crushed……

I foresee another 10 years of f88 oppression.

    • Jay says:

Yep. Thales have certainly tried to polish that turd. Now they’ve just rolled that POS in sprinkles…

    • Mick says:

The M4 is far from what it’s cracked up to be. You’ll also find most people who hate the Steyr have never used anything else and form their opinions from Internet forums and movies.

AR platform rifles are very fragile compared to an F88, take it from someone who has worked on both. Ask the Kiwis how the LMTs are going..

      • Ed says:

Cite your sources and resources of the “AR” platform being as you say, “fragile” in comparison to……..

        I’ll be waiting.

        • Rob Collins says:

I think his source is himself:
“take it from someone who has worked on both. ”
The question should be “In what capacity did you work with both?” if you want to tit for tat about his credibility.

I’ve run a few thousand rounds through Dad’s Colt 6920, I don’t think it’s too far of a stretch for me to assert that a direct impingement gun requires more upkeep to function reliably than a piston gun without pissing in a fan on the interwebz, never run/touched a Steyr or MSAR..

        • Mick says:

My source is my own personal experience. I work as an armourer in a military that fields both Steyrs and M4s. I’m not going to tell you that I’ve been doing it for 20 years, and I’m not going to tell you I work with some high speed door kicking unit, but I do deal with this stuff every single day.

The Steyr is not without it’s problems, but it is an excellent fleet weapon. Diggers tend to do some… unorthodox… things to their weapons, and Steyrs will hold up. They are simply more rugged. ‘Putting rounds through’ a rifle is not a sufficient benchmark in a military context. Take a Steyr and an M4 and really throw them around, bash them into rocks, drop them down cliffs, run over them like the guys who get issued them do and compare the result.

In the Australian Army, equipment is tiered to your requirement. If you need an M4, you will be issued an M4. If you need a Crye Airframe, you will be issued a Crye Airframe. If you haven’t been issued the latest go fast shit it’s probably because you don’t need it.

That being said, I work on rifles for a living, I don’t argue about rifles on the internet for a living. If your own personal experience tells you an M4 is better, run with it. It doesn’t concern me, I have no stake in this.

As for the EF88/F90, I have heard that they are costing the Army the same as a HK416 which IS truly disgusting – but I am comparing the F88SA2 and the M4, not the EF88 and 416.

          • Artha says:

Just curious as to why you think the 416 is rubbish. I’d heard that its a vast improvement over the existing m4. Not being a twat just curious as to your experience.

            • This Gentleman says:

I could be mistaken, but I think he is saying that the cost of the F90 vs the cost of the 416 is “disgusting” not that the 416 is rubbish.

      • Mac says:

The MARS-L (ie LMT) is going great, thanks for asking.

  2. Bruce says:

    Where are the wheels?

  3. DSM says:

What kind of connecting rods are involved in that mag release being that far forward? That actually removes an item on the bullpup complaint checklist. Provided it works reliably and doesn’t seize up.

I’d actually buy this, seems like it’d be a fun plinker at the range.

    • dan187 says:

The Tavor X95 also has the mag release in that location if you are looking for a range plinker that is available now.

Nice how they went all HK on the accessory layout board.

I see a lot of FN F2000 influence in that
