According to a pre-solicitation notice published yesterday by Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane, Knights Armament Company has offered to the Government an improved, capability upgrade to the upper receiver assembly for the M110K1 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS). The new upper receiver is 6.5mm Creedmoor (versus 7.62mm, CLIN 0001 on current contract) and provides longer distance shots and increased range.
Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane has a requirement for M110K1 new upper receiver (6.5mm Creedmoor conversion kit) assembly (Technology Improvement). NSWC, Crane Division, Crane, IN intends to modify the existing sole-source, Firm-Fixed Price (FFP), Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract (N00164-18-D-JN50) for technology improvements with Knights Armament Company.
Last year, USSOCOM adopted the 6.5 Creedmoor caliber to replace certain uses of 7.62mm NATO.
Still at the same 16″ barrel length?
Sooooo, NSW is finally going to blow the dust off the MK11’s and just keep the lowers?? Sounds like a plan since they SC’ed the MK11’s and MK12’s back in 09-10 for that horrible POS MK17 (SCAR-H)! Gotta love Big-Gov, 10 years later, finally improvement!
Is the image provided representative of the upper selected ? I wonder if the upper will use the URX4 M-Lok rail vs the older version pictured here ?
The image is from the SOCOM PIC brief, and is was a place-holder image. The items selected by SOCOM are significantly different than the K1 upper conversion kit. I can’t go into detail, but I can say that the handguard will have MLok negative-space mounting provisions.
The original 6.5/260 ballistics testing seemed to have been done with a 22″ barrel and the 147gr weight being a clear advantage.
Blink twice if we’re on the right track…
I can say that for long range precision a 22″ barrel would be a good choice, and the best projectile for semi-auto guns right now is probably the 140gr Berger AR Hybrid.
Concur, though I wonder how much of that is due to Hague with regard to the polymer tip “expanders” as they’re marketed for ELD-X. On the other hand I doubt anyone understands the transition from secant to tangent better than Berger, to your point about Semis. Setting aside industrial logistics entirely…
“Longer distance shots and increased range.”

So is this the NSW MRGG?
MRGG is a separate effort.
I sure hope the file photo 16” isn’t what is being used. The velocity hamstrings the round such that a 16” .308 has virtually the same external ballistics and far better barrel life.
