The heat helps activate the DWR.
Air drying is good for most of your outdoor gear and will in turn provide you a longer life in your products. Gore-Tex is one that is actually assisted by a tumble dry. The fabric treatment is a bit different and as SSD mentioned the heat helps re-activate the DWR and the molecules rebond to each other.

High heat for a short period of time is great to reactivate the DWR.
