Australian Army Fields Crye Precision AirFrame Helmets

The Australian Army tecently issued over 4,000 Crye Precision AirFrames to Tier 2 combatants in 1 Brigade. That alone is pretty big news.

Now here is where it gets interesting. Apparently, the procurement guys ordered, then cancelled, Crye helmet covers in AMCU. Looking at this photo it seems that someone local has made up some AMCU covers.

The tender for the remainder of the helmets (approximately 14,000 for both Tier 2 & 3) is being evaluated at the moment.

I don’t see it happening, quite honestly.

There’s already serious rumours of the system only buying a Brigade’s worth of the new kit (helmets, body armour, packs etc), and then swapping between ready brigades…

There’s still helmets in service that was manufactured with non-certified Kevlar. We bought it for a song, of course.

Nice. I’d like some cool stuff one day, too…

  5. Highlander says:

Australia doing procurement right, Canada not so much.

  6. Ian says:

Wow, this is big news indeed! 1 Brigade is still CA yes? What constitutes a tier 2 unit in the Australian Army? I thought they were Commandos initially.

  7. The Stig says:

That ruck looks a little saggy. A lot of weight pretty low on his body.

  8. Nova Arms says:

Can anyone explain why the average infantryman will want to wear a helmet that leaves the entire side of his face from the ear down completely exposed to bullets, blast or shrapnel?

I get it, regular-cut helmets do get toasty, but the point of a helmet is protection. Besides, I never had a problem with low-profile comms strapped to my ear under my helmet.

Now there’s a military that is thinking

Airframe was the first pick but could not deliver on time hence why we have Opscore which we are phasing out to all cores. Airframe will soon be the Helmet for all Arms core units. No kit is swapped between Brigades. As units move through the force gen cyslce they get the latest Verson if updates have been made.
