No Soldier Systems APBI This Year?

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

We were getting lots of questions from folks in industry asking us if we had heard anything about this year’s Soldier Systems Advanced Planning Brief for Industry. We hadn’t, and we hadn’t seen any announcements on Fed Biz Opps so we sent an inquiry to PEO Soldier but they never answered back. However, we’ve consulted with enough industry sources that we feel confident telling you that there isn’t going to be an APBI this year. It’s almost like cancelling Christmas for some folks.

The Soldier Systems APBI was a unique gathering. It brought together Acquisition professionals representing all four services, USSOCOM, and DHS with industry reps from the entire supply chain. No other DoD commodity group could boast this kind of interaction. What’s more, it didn’t cost an arm and a leg to participate so you’d see a lot of smaller firms there as well. I’d hazard a guess that more business was conducted over the two days in the lobby of that get together than at any other time throughout the year.

Sure, there are lots of other meetings throughout the year, but they are smaller and parochial in nature. For example, the footwear producers will meet, and maybe the printers or the armor folks. But generally, they are talking amongst themselves and often at an industry day where they are in direct competition. The APBI was the one time a year where everyone was in it together and critical to the health of the industry.

With an abrupt change in leadership at the PM-ICE the week before last and an upcoming change of command at PEO-Soldier this is the perfect time to ‘rally the troops.’ Hopefully, someone will step up and be able to recreate the magic that was the Soldier Systems APBI in a non-parochial venue.

We blew past a milestone again. Over 4500 articles. It’s amazing how quickly this is happening.

I guess we’ll need to do something big for 5000.

Attempted Infiltration at Natick

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Yesterday, five men attempted to gain entry to Natick Soldiers System Center using fake ID cards. All five men were in their early 20s and were probably attempting to gain access in order to commit criminal activity. However, due to the sensitive nature of research at Natick officials aren’t taking any chances.

According to a WCVB TV report, “If you don’t have like a security sticker or military ID, your car is searched, and one of the things they didn’t have was the proper ID. They noticed a couple of them were fake,” said Natick Labs spokesman John Harlow.

The perpetrators were arrested after being found with fake IDs, 40 counterfeit credit cards and stolen electronics that included nine laptops, two iPods, a Playstation game and alarm clocks.

The best part is the defense attorney’s assertion that the men weren’t up to anything nefarious. Oh no, they were in the area for a party. Even better was the excuse of one of the accused. He claimed to be a member of the Guard and was trying to gain entry to purchase uniform items. Classic.

12 Days of Tactical Christmas Update

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

It’s easier to contact you all this way than to coordinate an e-mail over a hundred different people from here, Tactical Fanboy and BOLO Report. We’ve finally received addresses from all of the winners and all manufacturers who generously donated prizes have been notified of our 12 Days of Tactical Christmas contest winners. Some have already recieved their prizes but others have not. Don’t worry. We haven’t forgotten about you. Winners will have gone into the order queue, but please give the vendors time to process and then ship your prizes. Some of the manufacturers will notify us (for instance, the 5.11 Tactical MOABs have already gone out, and the Blue Force Gear slings have either shipped already or will ship very shortly) but others will be caught up in their ops tempo. You are going to receive your prizes; thanks for participating in the contest! If you think that was cool, wait ’til you see what we’re all doing THIS year at Christmas.

NavExFor 2012 Is Coming – Don’t Miss The Boat

Now in its sixth year, NavExFor is one of our favorite tradeshows for a couple of reasons. For one thing, it is the only event focused specifically on Naval Expeditionary Forces. Additionally, Lodestar Group who puts the show on, always makes sure to lay on some great guest speakers. Each year they have a theme and this year’s is “Innovation in Constrained Environments” which can mean a lot of things but I think we’ll see a lot on doing more with what we have both in the form of forces and gear. I know they are also going to be taking a look at power programs.

Finally, we love this show because it’s right here in our backyard and very close to Joint Base Little Creek Ft Story, home of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command.

Make sure you plan to attend NavExFor 2012, March 13-14, 2012 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, Virginia Beach, VA. Register now.

SSD’s Humble Beginnings

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Not a lot of people know that SSD finds its roots in a website launched in 1997 called ‘Gear Guru – Equipment Resources for the Armed Professional’. Since then I’ve written a few times for print publications, but beginning in 2008 my main focus has been SSD. I’ve never written for any of the other blogs. Additionally, despite rumors to the contrary, SSD has not been purchased by another website. Those rumors were caused by an unfortunate incident with a badge at SHOT show.

Gear Guru’s landing page contained a few simple tidbits of wisdom I had assembled as well as links to the various content pages. Everything was categorized on individual pages and all of it was created in html and very time consuming. Undoubtedly, everyone’s favorite was the Links page. Thank goodness for WordPress which I use now and makes this easy.

Here’s the full words of wisdom list. I think it’s just as poignant today as when I originally published it almost 15 years ago. Maybe you can use some of it.

-LIFE IS HARD…ITS HARDER WHEN YOU’RE STUPID
-IF ITS STUPID BUT IT WORKS…IT ISN’T STUPID
-NEVER BRING A KNIFE TO A GUN FIGHT (LAW OF GROSS WEIGHT AND HEAVY CALIBER)
-NEVER FIGHT FAIR
-THINK WAR
-DENY EVERYTHING…ADMIT NOTHING…MAKE COUNTER ACCUSATIONS
-EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
-THERE IS NO SECOND PLACE IN A GUN FIGHT-WINNERS KILL, LOSERS GET KILLED, FIGHT TO WIN- TRAIN TO LIVE
-NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON A THREAT
-YOU FIGHT AS YOU TRAIN
-LEARN IT RIGHT AND YOU’LL DO IT RIGHT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE LEARN IT WRONG AND SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE TRYING TO GET IT RIGHT
-A WARRIOR IS HARD FROM THE INSIDE OUT
-FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO WIN THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH TIME TO TRAIN
-AGGRESSIVELY SEEK ANY KNOWLEDGE WHICH WILL ASSURE MISSION ACCOMPLISHMENT AND MAKE YOU A SURVIVOR AND A WINNER
-IT TAKES A SHOOTER TO LEAD A SHOOTER
-USE A SIMPLE TEMPLATE WHEN DECIDING THE VALUE OF SOMETHING EVERYTHING EITHER HAS TACTICAL VALUE OR IT DOES NOT
-ACTIVELY SEEK NEW TTPs AND EQUIPMENT THAT COULD MAKE YOUR UNIT MORE CAPABLE IN COMBAT
-EVERY DAY, ASK YOURSELF, “WHAT HAVE I DONE FOR MY UNIT?”
-BE SNEAKY, STEALTHY, AND DO THE UNEXPECTED WITHOUT BEING DETECTED
-FRONT SIGHT….FRONT SIGHT….BY GOD, FRONT SIGHT
-DON’T CONFUSE ENTHUSIASM WITH CAPABILITY

These Words of Wisdom Have Been Gleaned From a Variety of Sources.
Thanks to all of you who have taught me so much over the years.
Looking for a copy of Lobo’s Laws to add to the list. Can anyone help?
