HULC’s Latest Look

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Lockheed Martin was displaying the latest version of their Human Universal Load Carrier (HULC) exoskeleton this week at AUSA. Currently, HULC only supports the lower extremities and is designed to fit the 95th Percentile Soldier. This version has two large battery packs that accommodate three BA5590s per side which will power the suit for a 20 mile movement. However, power consumption is based on activity and the models on display at AUSA were only using two batteries which could last for days based on use in the demonstration mode.

Crye Wins LVBAV Contract

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

SSD has learned that Crye Precision has been awarded the contract for the SPEAR BALCS Low Visibility Body Armor Vest although no formal announcement has yet been made by the Government. This information is based on a query to the Contracting Office. This was a 100% Small Business Set Aside and the design team has been responsible in the past for the Eagle CIRAS and BAE MBAV, both selected for use by USSOCOM, so the choice of Crye is no surprise. The only remaining Government information on the web is located here.

CM901 Magazine?

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

There has been quite a bit of discussion on the magazine depicted in the Colt patent drawings for a Modular Firearm. Many have noted that it is an AR10 magazine and based on the date of the patent this was probably the case. However, in the ensuing four years since the patent was issued, a great product called the Magpul PMAG 20LR came along and is rapidly becoming THE industry standard for a 7.62 magazine for Stoner-style weapons. We won’t know for sure until AUSA when Colt has promised to unveil the CM901, but our money’s on the PMAG 20LR.

M24 Reconfigured Sniper Weapon System

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

You first read that something was afoot right here at SSD last year when our friend Sal Palma mentioned that operations in Afghanistan were breathing new life into the Army’s reliance on the M24 Sniper Weapons System. The only shortcoming was caliber. Taking the lead from the Marine Corps’ success with the .300 winmag cartridge, the Army set about to retrofit a small fleet of rifles. Now known as the M24E1, a contract for up to $28.2 Million was awarded on September 20th to Remington to rebuild 3600 M24s currently in service to the new standard.

According to information provided by Remington, the weapons will receive:

New stock (Remington Arms Chassis System)

Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm Extended Range/Tactical (ER/T) M5 Locking Adjustment rifle scope

Quick detach AAC muzzlebrake and suppressor (Remington acquired AAC last year)

Five round detachable magazine

Corrosion resistant finish

Of special note is the stock which is called the Remington Arms Chassis System (RACS). Essentially a variant of the chassis system developed in 2008 for the Modular Sniper Rifle by a contracted industrial design house, the goals were to lower weight through modular 1913 rail segments, increase accuracy though a free floated barrel design, and maximize adjustability through length of pull and comb. The skeletonized fore end is finding its way on to everything from the Modular Sniper Rifle to the militarized variant of the Adaptive Combat Rifle, to developmental M4-style carbines with monolithic uppers and is becoming almost a trademark of the recent resurgence of Remington’s Military Products Division.

Remembering September 11, 2001

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

My children and I spent time today discussing the significance of that day. My children were all just kids, one not even born yet. As they have grown it seems as though our country has moved on. I still don’t understand how we can be in midst of the longest shooting war in our Nation’s history yet the average citizen barely knows it is going on. In my home we know all too well. Friends serve in combat and we do our bit here at SSD.

In the ensuing years since the Towers came down, I retired from the military and my children, one by one are answering our Nation’s call. My only hope is that by the time my youngest becomes a man, he will serve a victorious land at peace.

Honor those who serve and remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
