Carinthia Sleeping Systems and Cold Weather Clothing

November 5th, 2011

I’ve known about Austria’s Carinthia bags for years but this commercial definitely jogged my memory. Those big packs remind me of my time in LRS in the late 80s.

Carinthia’s Observer Plus bivy has seen extensive use by European Snipers and Recce troops.

USSOCOM Precision Sniper Rifle

November 5th, 2011

Yesterday, USSOCOM finally released the solicitation for the Precision Sniper Rifle.

“The PSR system is designed to address the operational effectiveness and SOF sniper survivability over the current inventory of sniper weapons. The major components of the PSR system are: rifle, ammunition, magazines, sound suppressor including a mirage mitigating device, operator manual, sling, cleaning kit, bipod, drag bag, and hard carrying case. These items have been determined to be a commercial item and are intended to fulfill the approved USSOCOM requirement for a PSR.”

In order to see the actual requirements you have to have explicit access meaning you have to be registered on the Central Contractor Registration (CCR) and be registered with a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code of 332994 for small arms manufacturing and/or 332992 small arms ammunition manufacturing.

The previous entry on FBO will no longer be used for this solicitation.

ECCO Socks

November 4th, 2011

You might well know the shoe company ECCO, but what you probably don’t know (and we didn’t either) is that they have introduced a line of performance socks utilizing drirelease, a moisture wicking material that dries 4 times faster than cotton. While there are a number of types available for a variety of applications, the Technical Socks might be just the ticket for cold weather use. In addition to padding along the bottom of the foot and the heel, the sock also incorporates shin padding which may be idea for certain applications.

EXO

November 4th, 2011

EXO from Exoconcept is a surface watercraft designed to assist swimmers. Exoconcept advertises “No Emission + No Noise + No Smoke + No Maintenance.” Sounds like it might be useful for certain surface swimmer or rescue applications. If not, it looks like one hell of a lot of fun.

Available in various models, the EXO is made from ABS plastic or carbon fiber and powered by a 3.5, 4.5, or 7 kw electric motor connected to a water jet drive.

Travis Haley on Airsoft X Training

November 4th, 2011

Travis Haley makes a compelling argument that airsoft has a place in a well rounded training regimen. Remember, if it’s a tool you are going to use, identify its limitations and use it to supplement rather than supplant live fire.

ARES-16 from ARES Defense

November 4th, 2011

ARES Defense walked us through their ARES-16 family of small arms. It is 5.56mm and incorporates a Gas-Piston, Short Stroke Tappet operating system. Actually, to configure the various weapons, the ARES-16 relies on different upper and lower receivers. These combinations allow the user to configure the weapon as:

-Sub-Carbine
-Carbine
-Assault Rifle
-Designated Marksman Rifle
-Magazine-Fed Assault Machine Gun
-Belt-Fed Assault Machine Gun
-Dual-Feed Assault Machine Gun
-Belt-Fed Mounted Light Machine Gun

For me, the most interesting configuration was the Dual-Feed (AMG-3). It allows the weapon to be fed by a SAW drum or a magazine. Notice in the photo below that the soft ammo pack sits lower than on the dedicated Belt-Fed gun (AMG-2). Interestingly, the machine gun configurations utilize an upper with non-reciprocating left side charging handle that lies along the top left edge of the upper. You can also see that this upper has a feed tray cover like a traditional belt-fed design.

Available as full weapons or upgrade kits for existing M16/M4 weapons.

Zombie Targets from ZERO Heavy Industries

November 4th, 2011

ZERO Heavy Industries isn’t a company that jumped on the “Zombie Bandwagon” to make a couple of quick bucks. On no, they recognized the Zombie menace from the git go and set up an entire company specifically to deal with the newest threat to our way of life.

In addition to full line of carbines, they’ve elected to produce a series of training aids. The Zombie targets are a full 23″ x 35″. Printed on 70 lb offset paper in full color on an earth tone background, using vegetable (soy) based inks. Additionally, there’s ample space to make notes in the margin. Heck, they’ve thought of everything. Even the environment. They print with vegetable (soy) based inks, and these targets are printed completely with wind-power credits. Available in packs of 3,6,12, or 24. Did we mention they are Made in USA!?

Look for an article on their line of Zombie neutralizing carbines soon, here on SSD.
