NAVY SEALS — DANGER CLOSE

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Hans Halberstadt and I are longtime friends but I read his books long before I knew him. He began making photographs as a door gunner in Viet Nam, then made movies for a while, then wrote books about the military for thirty years and 67 titles. He has taken some of his extensive imagery collection and began to create videos. I think it’s a great way to showcase his work but also pay tribute to our forces. Since SSD is headquartered in a Navy SEAL town, what better fit than a video dedicated to them? What a great coincidence.

Over the years much of his coverage has been of SOF – Army SF, SEALs and SWCC, JTACs, and USMC Recon – and these will become videos of their own. Eventually, he plans to do additional videos on combat aviation, armor, EOD, infantry, and other topics.

Halberstadt’s company, Military Stock Photography, offers imagery that is in compliance with DoD directives for commercial use. It’s a great resource for industry.

GoPro Camera Test Jump

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

While traditionally the GoPro Hero has been considered a helmet cam, like so many others Eric Halberstadt realized it could be used in other ways as well. In this case, he attached it to his leg during a static line parachute jump. Eric makes demonstration jumps using WWII equipment as well as a professional TV commercial director of photography.

The GoPro Hero is widely recognized for its use in action sports. One of the huge draws is that it’s relatively inexpensive and with a variety of mounting solutions it can be adapted to any number of uses including attaching it to a rifle. In fact, the GoPro Hero is so small that there might even be room for a couple of them on the rail of your M4 allowing you to capture numerous perspectives. But probably the biggest selling point if the quality of the image. Just look at it, have you seen anything so clear? And all of you legs, make sure you bow down when you watch this video.

My friend Hans Halberstadt recently launched his own blog to discuss his calling, Military Photography. He has begun to detail the trials and tribulations of getting the perfect photo. It is quite entertaining and great background info for those who wonder what it takes to produce a quality tactical photograph.
