New Dutch Camo and Uniform?

According to several internet postings, the accompanying pictures is reportedly of a new camouflage pattern and uniform for the Dutch Army.

Unveiled at a recent Army shooting competition, the garrison and field variants are reportedly to see fielding beginning in 2014 as an extension of the Soldier Modernization Program (in Dutch, VOSS for the English Improved Operational Soldier System). It is anticipated that this variant, intended for woodland and urban environments, will not see any further alteration. The pattern is of the so-called fractal design, which uses patterns within patterns. Additionally, there is an arid pattern under development. As you can see, the Soldiers are in front of a TenCate sign. According to reporting, the uniforms are made from TenCate’s Defender-M fabric, which is the same fabric story as the Army’s FR ACU and USMC’s FROG.

Like the patt, not so sure on the colors. Green and grey seem an odd mix, at least in this vibrant green. A bit too strong for most urban environs, I think. More browns would be a better choice. But I’m looking forward to seeing some pics from field trials.

The full story seems to be that there are currently 4 camouflage patterns in the Dutch MoD, not counting the single color suits for non-military, navy medical personnel and so on. These 4 patters can be reduced to two thus reducing the number of different articles on the shelf, thus reducing budget. Also the current in use patterns are outdated and a fractal patter is more effective, especially in short distances. One type is shown here. the other, an arid colored type is still WIP.

There has been no decision yet to actually go forward and make the camouflage change happen. So all is still under development and awaiting approval.

the pattern is designed from extensive scientific research done in the recent past (for example: http://www.mendeley.com/research/design-and-evaluation-of-camouflage-patterns-for-application-to-uniforms/)

The new camouflage on the picture is called NFP-Green: Netherlands Fractal Pattern Green. It’s a prototype. At the moment it’s not sure whether this actually will be the new Dutch camouflage.

The arid variety – for desert and jungle operations – is called NFP-Tan.
