SO Tech Changes Their Coyote Brown Color

SO Tech informed us late last week that they are changing their Coyote Brown color from Coyote to Tan 499. However, SO Tech will refer to the new color as Coyote Brown. As you can see, it’s a little lighter but you have to remember that the US Army adopted Tan 499 as the accessory color for use with OCP (MultiCam).

Let them know what you think on their Facebook page.

This is comical seeing that neither one is Coyote Brown 498 to begin with. One is tan, the other is their variation of M JKhaki. Might as well just call it Dark Flat Earth.

  2. John says:

Tan 499? Whatever happened to the real “coyote brown” that you find from companies like Camelbak? Why are those molle pouches so hard to find?

  3. MattF says:

This makes no sense. If somebody wants Tan 499 to work with OCP, why not just order Multicam? For folks that need ‘proper’ Coyote Brown 498 gear, i.e. Marines and Navy, I don’t think the Tan 499 (SO Tech ‘Coyote’) will be viewed by their commands as an acceptable substitute.

  4. Major says:

In related news, the General Accounting Office are renaming “red” as “black”. The budget is now in the black.

  5. MARINEFO says:

I ordered a shitload of Coyote gear from SO Tech and went to pick it up and it was basically greenish tan. I got into an argument that I should have specified “Marine Coyote Brown” Somehow SO Tech is the only company that thinks there are multiple Coyote Browns. They make descent gear but are clueless in this area.

  6. John Denny says:

Why can’t they all reference what number their color is? They all have a different idea of what the general name “Coyote” or “FDE” is. I realize dye lots are all going to be different, and each manufacturer has their “thing”, but there really is too much flailing around when it comes to color standards.

  7. John says:

Who sells a lot of coyote brown 498 gear we can buy?

  8. Lasse says:

ATS, BlueForce Gear, Mayflower R&C and First Spear all have 498 as their Coyote Brown.. There are tons of other companies as well, these are just on the top of my head.

  9. Canuck says:

This makes no sense. Call it with its actual name.

If they want to phase out CB… fine. Phase it out. You’ll miss opportunities, people will go buy elsewhere, but don’t call “coyote brown” your “tan” gear. Those who didn’t see this notice on SSD or on your FB (that is, 90% of your clients) will feel ripped off.

Besides… Marines and other armed forces around the world who have regulations on color will be pissed off.

    All around… bad, bad move.

  10. John says:

    Thanks Lasse,

If anyone else knows who sells Coyote Brown 498, feel free to post please.

While we’re on the subject of Coyote Brown 498, there is another color that people are not consistent on which I thought I’d bring up: “Foliage”. Is there a number for the Foliage color that Camelbak uses? Who sells that particular color of Foliage?

  11. Stefan S. says:

Sweet mother of god! Not another color! Remember when OD was OD?

  12. chris u'5 says:

I was pretty surprised at the colour of the ‘Coyote Brown’ SO Tech Mission Go Bag I picked up recently.
I agree that there should be more of a standard.

    • Emm says:

What we all know as true Coyote Brown is actually special order at SO Tech. Their CB is Coyote Tan or Khaki, as a commenter posted earlier.

  13. GW Ayers says:

Tactical Tailor also carries its legacy line and the majority of its Fight Light line in Coyote Brown 498.
