LAPD Selects Geissele Super Duty AR for SWAT and TST

The Los Angeles Police Department has selected Geissele Automatics to provide rifles for their Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and the Tactical Surveillance Team. This selection was determined after a lengthy and thorough process by the Department Staff and will replace legacy weapons systems currently in use.

They chose the Super Duty AR Pattern Rifle for its durability and reliability characteristics. It features a 11.5” Cold Hammer Forged Barrel and Reliability Enhanced Bolt Carrier Group with NANO Weapon Coating.

This adds to a trend within Southern California Law Enforcement Agencies adopting the Geissele Rifles to include Arcadia PD, Pomona PD, Huntington Beach PD and Azusa PD.

I guess the 416s are worn out.

I highly doubt that, I think that LAPD SWAT just had the 416Ds for almost 20 years now and they are difficult to suppress which is probably why they didn’t buy suppressors for them, they are heavy and bulky even with new M-Lok handguards, et…Those guys didn’t put a million rounds through those guns like Delta and Devgru. They probably have 200,000 rounds through those guns max if even half that.

Recent body cam video has shown BCM rifles mixed in with the HKs for LAPD SWAT. HK in general isn’t pulling to contracts it used too. JSOC has moved along to SIG and Noveske depending upon the element and LE has moved away a while ago.

I am pretty sure LAPD SWAT (D Platoon) has put WAY more than 200,000 rounds through those guns over the last twenty years. I don’t know how much CAG or DEVGRU puts through their rifles (although I imagine it is more than LAPD)….however, I can say that LAPD shoots A LOT. I would say they shoot more than virtually any other SWAT team in the US. Maybe only second to FBI HRT. Good full-time SWAT teams but a lot of rounds down range each year. Although LAPD SWAT have to work in one of the worst legal systems in the US, in the land of fairytales and restricted policing, they are one of the the best SWAT teams I have ever seen and worked with. They are the real deal and live up to their reputation. The HK416 is a great, reliable gun, but isn’t the best, especially in today’s world. Lots of opinions in the gun community on what is good and what is bad, but at this point I don’t think it should be a surprise that they went to a different rifle.
