Friday, January 18th, 2013

Here’s a sneak peek of the Flat Range Utility Short and Hot Weather Combat Shirt from Velocity Systems. Both items were developed based on user requirements. These will be available in camo patterns as well as solid shades. This is the Nomad print from Kryptek. Don’t mind the slight shade difference, these two garments feature different fabrics and were printed at different mills with different methods. Final versions will be spot on.

This Hot Weather Combat Shirt means you won’t be cutting your sleeves off anymore. It is manufactured from a comfortable, moisture wicking fabric and incorporates a rugby-style collar for comfort. Additionally, there are flat pockets with crossover flaps on each bicep.

SHOT Show – XGO

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

XGO has introduced a new line called Power Skins which comprises their performance garments. For example, they’ve introduced a new PT Short and Shirt.

Even though the T-shirt looks and feels like cotton it’s 94% polyester with 6% Lycra and incorporates anti microbial properties. The PT shorts incorporate a hung mesh liner and drawstring waist as well as slash pockets and an internal coin pocket.

They haven’t forgotten FR. In fact, they’ve developed a new FR fabric. They’ve changed the way that they knit the fabric but not the FR content in a pointelle knit which incorporates tiny holes that offer increased comfort and ensure air permeability compliance.

SHOT Show – PHATS Suit

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

Parachutists High Altitude Thermal Suit developed jointly with Airborne Systems and Wild Things. Initially, it was developed for a French requirement but refinements were made at the request of Natick and USSOCOM. Offered in XXSmall through XXLarge but its oversized to fit over the jumper’s clothing and basic equipment.

20130115-173920.jpg

PHATS has been highly tuned for use by free fall parachutists. For example, there are multiple zippered vents so that the jumper doesn’t overheat on the ground or on the flight. Additionally, the front of the PHATS has less insulation than the rear since the parachutist will have equipment on his front. They made this change after jumpers from multiple units found that the insulation could be removed. Where insulated, it features gridded fleece. Additionally, it’s a softshell for wind and weather resistance.

As you can see, it covers the entire body except for the head to accommodate a helmet an oxygen mask. The coverall design even covers the feet for insulation as well as to mitigate wind resistance issues. There is a waist adjustment that is covered by the front opening and the main opening features a flap with magnetic closures. Gauntlet-style handcovers are also integrated into the design. Additionally, the rear of the legs feature clear pouches for chemlights. This allows jumpers to recognize one another in the air. Finally, there is an external forearm pocket on the left sleeve and large zippered cargo pockets.

Check Out American Armor Attire at SHOT Show

Monday, January 14th, 2013

American Armor Attire

Last Fall I had to opportunity to meet with a small company in Fredricksburg, Virginia that makes bespoke suits. Granted, in the DC area there are plenty of tailors. What makes these guys different is that they make armored suits. In addition to three piece suits with armor panels, they also make armored dress shirts.

Owners Abbas Haider and Robert Davis began the work as a project at the University of Mary Washington and over time transformed it into American Armor Attire after graduation. Renegade Armor, also located in the area supplies the ballistic material to them. The result is the access to a custom tailored suit with armor built in. These guys know what they are doing. You would never know that the clothing that I was shown was armored. And, their location is ideal. It’s close enough to DC so that they have access to a very large market but far enough out that they can get some work done.

Representatives from American Armor Attire will be available at SHOT Show in the FirstSpear / Renegade Armor booth #8103.
