Straight Out Of The Bronze Age

Tuesday, June 21st, 2016

SSD Reader Heinrich sent us this great photo with caption. Thanks for the find!

Hello,

While recently traveling in Vietnam, I found this Gerber Mark II Commando Dagger in a small provincial museum in Quy Nhon (Bình Dinh Province). It looks like straight out of the bronze age and must have a fairly spooky history. But since Gerber introduced the Mark II in 1967, the description of the museum is probably not correct. It would be interesting, what your readers, who may have served in this area at the time, can speculate about its origin.

Sincerely,

Heinrich

Winkler Knives – Legacy Axe and Recon Knife

Thursday, June 16th, 2016

Winkler Knives unveiled two new products at the recent Blade Show designed with US Navy and Army Veteran Special Operator Kevin Holland. He is the guy who first came to Daniel Winkler to create a military axe so it’s great to see him lend his experience toward new designs.

This is the Legacy Axe which shares some lines from that first model that Kevin carried ino combat. One of the biggest changes is the swept back handle which doesn’t constantly catch on the leg as you walk.  You’ll also note that the top half of the handle is skeletonized and wrapped in 550 cord.  As with all Winkler Knives handle options include maple and rubber (chiseled is optional) but I’m sure you could get micarta if you asked.

Below, you can see the Recon Knife. Offered with or without teeth, it was designed specifically by Holland as a companion for the Legacy Axe.

DDR 18Xray NSN

Wednesday, June 15th, 2016

The 18Xray by Darrel Ralph Designs has been a very popular automatic opener. It also has an NSN of 1095-01-568-8897.

The 18Xray is made from 154-CM premium grade stainless steel. It has a blade length of 3-13/16 inches and an overall length of 8-7/8 inches with anodized 6160 aluminum slabs which incorporate a lanyard hole as well as pocket clip. It’s quite a robust knife which integrates Darrel’s SAS (Slide Auto Safety). Instead of a simple button that can actuate in your pocket, with the SAS you have to push the button forward and down to open the blade. It also offers a very positive lock.

Gerber – 06 AUTO : 10TH Anniversary Knife

Tuesday, June 14th, 2016

Coming July 1st, Gerber is releasing a 10th Anniversary version of their 06 AUTO.

To honor the heritage and time-tested durability of the 06 Automatic family of knives, Gerber introduces a special, commemorative edition of this military favorite. This knife celebrates a decade of service, developed specifically to support American service members deploying globally. With hundreds of thousands issued to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines over the years, the iconic platform is a familiar favorite to many.

Features:
-An Olive Drab Cerakote® coated aluminum represents the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) of American troops deploying early in OEF and OIF.
-A Stone Washed, Fine Edge, S30V blade pays homage to the unrelenting durability of the platform, battle tested globally.
-Unique laser mark. To commemorate 10 years of service, the laser engraving features a reverse flag. The reverse American flag originates from the action of early US cavalry and infantry carrying the flag into battle. Always charging forward, the flag would be seen with the stars in front and stripes flowing behind. Today, Army Regulation 670-1 addresses the application and wear of the flag on the uniform, ensuring that the “star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right”. Rich in historical symbolism, the reverse flag represents the will and bravery of those deployed in service of the United States.

Blade Show – Bastion

Wednesday, June 8th, 2016

Bastion introduced their new Partizan folder at Blade Show and since it was Blade Show they had quite a few different versions available for sale, all with the same slim, minimalist blade made from D2. In addition to the variations of Titanium slabs, there was also a version with Carbon Fiber scales seen at the bottom of this photo. It was like holding a feather.

Blade Show – Triple Aught Design / Ben Orford

Wednesday, June 8th, 2016

Triple Aught Design displayed this hatchet from British custom knife maker Ben Orford. It’s called the Nordic Carver and combines Scandinavian styling with modern materials. It’s made from either 4.6mm, 5.6mm or 7mm unground 01 carbon tool steel with a 5.5″ cutting edge. The different blade thicknesses give a range of weights for the application.

TAD is considering doing a special collaboration with Ben. What do you think?
