Freedom Hunters

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

We ran across a cool organization called Freedom Hunters this weekend at Bass Pro Shop in Hampton, VA. Bass Pro Shop always has a lot going on during the weekend such as clinics, special sales, celebrity visits and contests.

Freedom Hunters offers the opportunity for military personnel and in particular, wounded veterans to participate in hunting and fishing by partnering with individuals, corporations and land owners to facilitate equipment, transportation, access and most of all companion and mentorship. It’s a great way to offer our nation’s heroes a way to enjoy the outdoors.

Please check out their website to learn more or to donate. www.freedomhunters.org

Looking for a Unique Giveaway?

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Between military and LE organizations and industry, there are a gazillion different giveaways out there. Consequently, we are always looking for something different and we have found it thanks to S.T.A.T. International. They just introduced CHIPS. No, it has nothing to do with Ponch or John but rather stands for Changing How Industries Promote Synergy.

Once you understand what CHIPS is all about, the name makes complete sense. They have taken traditional challenge coins but traded the metal for ceramic. They are not only less expensive, but also offer some design options that are all but impossible with metal coins such as edge lettering. Working with lead designer, Jay Rowlingson of T!ng Creative, they will help you to develop a custom product whether for units, agencies, private firms or as a replacement for traditional business cards. These are pretty cool and we are taking a look at using them.

Help This Couple Realize Their Dream

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

If you are a reader of SSD then this couple is your kind of people. They are trying to win a contest to have their dream wedding. Vying for the $100,000 prize are couples from all over, with stories just as diverse. But out of all of these people, Mike and Ana get our attention and our vote. “Why?”, might you ask? Well that’s simple, she’s an AC-130 Pilot and he is a Combat Controller.

Mike calls in Ana’s Gunship for fire power & Ana makes sure she protects Mike & his guys. We can’t do anything easy, we deployed half way around the world to see each other & will return 1-2 mo. before our Aug wedding.

Our favorite charity, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation gave us the 411 on these two and after reading their wedding plans we knew we had to get the word out.

Family & friends are #1 importance for the wedding, as we cherish people in our lives. Inorder to ensure everyone could make it, we had to make sure we were both home from deployments but before college football season started. #2 is honoring fallen commrades (sic) who aren’t there to celebrate with a remembrance table w/ their names on it. #3 all of our dance $ will be donated to Special Operations Warrior Foundation to provide the children of fallen Special Operations Warriors scholarships.

After reading that how can you not support them?

S.O.Tech Introduces New Symbology

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

S.O.Tech has three new additions to their full line of tactical symbology which was designed as a Mil Std 2525C supplement to accurately represent specialized job functions at the individual level. S.O.Tech has also adapted the symbols for use on patches which can be worn to designate various functions at the small unit level. This can be an excellent way to identify special skills often found in attachments to a patrol or to cut through the “fog of war” during chaotic situations. Additionally, they have affixed the symbols to prints and T-shirts to facilitate pride in one’s job.

Of course, the best use of these symbols is as they were originally intended; on maps and other operations graphics. S.O.Tech produces the excellent TMPST (Tactical Mission Planning Set) system. Designed as the ultimate portable sane table, its magnets include blank arrows and blank tiles for users to draw on their own symbols and names. This encourages Soldier creativity and gives S.O.TECH feedback on potential new symbols. In fact, they are always looking at new designs so if you need a special symbol for your job function let us know in the comments. We know they’ll be reading. The best suggestion will win a prize from SSD. Finally, keep an eye peeled for the Battalion-level TMPST, currently in development.
