November 25, 2014 marked the 13th anniversary of the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi and the date of the first American killed in what became Operation Enduring Freedom. Johnny Micheal Spann was not only the first American killed in the conflict, but also the first CIA officer killed since 9/11. Since that time the Agency has added a total of 33 stars to the Memorial Wall.

The front of the shirt is an artist rendition of Mi-17 helicopter used by the CIA’s Northern Alliance Liaison Team (NALT) just after 9/11. The back is the Memorial Wall located in the lobby of the Original Headquarters Building, with the most recent 33 stars highlighted in remembrance and accompanied by the wall’s heading “IN HONOR OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY”

Two Armies

Sunday, January 4th, 2015

In honor of the return of the garrison army, I offer you this:

“I’d like to have two armies: one for display with lovely guns, tanks, little soldiers, staffs, distinguished and doddering Generals, and dear little regimental officers who would be deeply concerned over their General’s bowel movements or their Colonel’s piles, an army that would be shown for a modest fee on every fairground in the country. The other would be the real one, composed entirely of young enthusiasts in camouflage uniforms, who would not be put on display, but from whom impossible efforts would be demanded and to whom all sorts of tricks would be taught. That’s the army in which I should like to fight.”

Once again this year, I’d like to present a copy of the Christmas card that “Bright Light” author Stephen Perry sent from Nha Trang to his family the week before Christmas 1967. It definitely takes my thoughts to the thousands of men and women (including my daughter) defending the great land and her allies who won’t be home this Christmas. America’s thoughts and prayers are with them.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from Ming (and that’s an order)!
