Grey Ghost Gear to Launch Civy Pack Line Called G3

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

Idaho-based Grey Ghost Gear told us that they are launching a civilian pack line called G3. They will start out with three pack: Large 2218 cubic inches, Medium 1345 cubic inches and Small 375 cubic inches. These bags will be manufactured in the same factory that Karrimor uses so we are looking at great quality. In case you’re wondering, these will be made overseas, for the civilian market just like all of the other packs on the civilian side.

OR – Granite Gear

20130127-150019.jpg

The Granite Gear Leopard is an ultralightweight pack developed originally for marathon athletes Justin “Trauma” Lichter and Shawn “Pepper” Forry in their recent Himalayas trek. One of teh ways Granite Gear keeps the weight down is by using 100D and 210D Cordura. Additionally, Granite Gear has successfully adapted PALS into their packs in discreet ways. for example, the hipbelt features what is essentially PALS webbing and these are used to attach tool loops and external pouches. The Leopard features a roll top closure along with a floating lid. Seen here is the Oatmeal and Java colorway which I prefer but if you like, there’s also a Skyblue and Slate version.

This is a shot of their Vapor Current suspension which is denoted by VC after the name of the pack. The frame sheet features molded air channels and along with its associated full-length HDPE framesheet is designed to accommodate loads up to 35 lbs. Think high volume over weight here. As with many Granite Gear packs the Leopard is available in a women’s model and there are different length sizes to offer a better fit.

Here, Granite Gear’s Dan Cruikshank goes over the features of the Leopard.

Look for a future version as well called the Snow Leopard and made from Spectra.

Granite Gear likes to bring military packs to OR that show capability and that’s the case with this variant of the Chief Patrol. It’s a bit slimmed down and in addition to the standard roll top with antenna and radio cable slits, this 40 liter pack incorporates a panel to access the load.

OR – H2O Outdoor Gear

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

In years past we’ve covered H2O Gear’s skis, and they have a few new models but this time we thought we’d mix it up and show you their Tusk Guide Pack. This is the pack that Pro Ski Guide Dean Cummings wears. This pack is optimized for ski guides.

20130124-125636.jpg

It features an asymmetric front zip that secures a pocket for the shovel blade and handle. Additionally, there is a top opening right side pocket for an avalanche probe. One really cool feature is the auto retracting ski cable that snakes out from the bottom of the pack to secure skis. Skis can also be carried A-frame style along the sides of the pack.

20130124-125518.jpg

There is a full length side opening zipper access to the pack’s main bag as well as side pockets that will accommodate the bottom of an ice axe as well as accept a water bottle. The main bag features an internal hydration pocket and there is a port for the tubing at the top that allows routing to either shoulder.

20130124-125809.jpg

The Shirt Fit shoulder straps offer increased comfort particularly when layering. The top lid incorporates an internal map pocket and the top of the pack features a spindrift-style collar.

The hip belt is semi rigid and adjustment uses the pull forward method which is a bit easier to get a snug fit. The frame is a combination HDPE frame sheet combined with a single aluminum stay.

20130124-130012.jpg

There are ample tie down points along the lack of the pack along with multiple compression straps to manage the load.

Made in USA! The Guide Packs are available in Red, Orange, Blue, Black and Charcoal.

Hazard 4 had several new items on display including the Smuggler, a padded rifle sling bag. Designed to take up to AK sized rifles, it will easily accept SBRs as well as broken down carbines. There are plenty of accessory pockets and the carrying strap can be tucked out of the way.

Coming later this year.
