Friday, August 5th, 2011

Mountaineering outfitter Brooks Range displayed their elephant’s foot sleep system. Designed to be used in conjunction with a parka it could be used to eliminate the sleeping bag from the Soldier’s load in some situations. It is available in several colors.

Softec Throw Blanket

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

I was recently in Bed Bath & Beyond buying towels and this cool fleece throw blanket caught my eye. I picked one up and it is comfy and think it would be a good choice for folks heading down range considering the price (14.99) and materials (Polartec® Softecâ„¢). Yes, it’s SO comfy I am writing an article about it. Finally, it’s a generous 50″ W x 70″ L and available in Linen (tan) and Bark (Brown).

Nanuk Cases

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Nanuk Cases is a Canadian firm that is just beginning to gain a following here in the US. They produce waterproof cases for storage and shipping. While they have standard products, everything is customizable including colors and inserts.

One of the biggest advantages to Nanuk Cases is their one-handed Powerclaw Latching System. It is easy to use and the cases can be padlocked to secure your goods. Also, instead of the standard “Nanuk” in the space near the handle Nanuk can mold whatever you want (within size limitations).

One of the coolest features is the ability to attach a shoulder strap. In the buckle guards are mounting points for Nanuk’s proprietary Neoprene shoulder straps which feature Aircellâ„¢ comfort technology and won’t slip off your shoulder. What’s more, the straps are customizable.

The lid locks open thanks to the integrated lid stays so there’s no worry about breaking fragile items or getting hit on the hand or head with a falling lid. The cases are made in Canada and considered trade compliant. Additionally, they ship to US addresses from Nanuk’s facility in Michigan so your cases aren’t hung up in shipping.

While Nanuk’s current line up doesn’t include a rifle case, our friends at Stryke Logistical Group has assured us that one is in development.

T Series Sleeping Bags

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Extreme Outfitters has just begun offering the new T Series Sleeping Bags from Tactical Assault Systems. The bags range in size and temp ratings and include the T2 (10°C/50°F), T3 (0°C/32°F), T4 (-10°C/14°F), and T5 (-20°C/-4°F) bags.

Utilizing Dupont® Thermolite® Extreme® insulation, the T Series offer excellent compressibility. Additionally, the rectangular compression sack allows the stored bag to pack easier by eliminating dead space in your pack. All bags in the T Series have a couple of innovative features including a zip-in/zip-out removable bug net as well as a zip-in/zip-out thermal head cover. Based on combat lessons learned the bags have a Velcro/Snap closure system in addition to the zipper allowing the operator to escape the bag quickly.

Through the month of July Extreme will be selling these at 25% OFF retail as an introductory special. They are available now in Black or OD from www.extremeoutfitters.us.

McNett Gruntline

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

Sometimes the simplest things make life better. For guys who can’t rely on KBR laundry, washing your clothes on a washboard and hanging them out to dry is a reality of life. Manufactured from braided rubber tubing the Gruntline stretches up to 7 feet and has clips on each end to attach it for use as a clothes line or as a tie down strap. Although its been around for awhile, its a classic. I carried one with me for years and it got lots of use as intended as well as to suspend ponchos in large tents so I could stake out some “me” space.

Available from McNett.

Expeditionary At All Levels ADS

Monday, June 6th, 2011

ADS recently published a great primer on various forms of expeditionary shelters. It also contains a few pointers on planning considerations. The article can also be downloaded as a PDF. In this format it reads very much like a magazine and is great for passing along to others. ADS Launches Expeditionary Catalog ADS

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

This latest specialty catalog from ADS features mobile non-permanent shelters, soft-sided tents, rigid wall shelters, power systems, armored shelters, perimeter and security equipment, and individual tent and sleep systems. All-in-all it’s pretty impressive. I try to keep up with what they are up to and I had no idea how many different shelter solutions were available. But it’s not just tents and shelters, my review revealed generators, showers, flooring, light kits and a whole myriad of equipment needed to get a base up and running.
