High-Flying Extreme Mumfest

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

This is a pretty interesting article form our friends at Extreme Outfitters. They put quite a bit back into the community and sponsor some interesting causes. This report by ERIC STEINKOPFF details Extreme Outfitters sponsorship of the Flippenout Extreme Trampoline team.

NEW BERN, NC – The temperature rose to the mid 80-degree mark under a cloudless sky over the October 9-10 weekend for the 30th Annual Mumfest, but thousands still flocked to the downtown area to see what all the fuss was about.

More than 300 artists were featured along several closed-off city blocks, as well as concerts, car shows and daredevil demonstrations – that included the Extreme Outfitters-sponsored Flippenout Extreme Trampoline acrobatic performance at the Union Point Park waterfront where the scenic Neuse and Trent Rivers meet.
“New Bern is a terrific area and the Mumfest is a terrific festival – it’s a privilege to come back,” said Flippenout emcee and operations director Mike Kennedy. “We want to thank Extreme Outfitters for making that possible.”

Early Saturday and Sunday morning traffic was very light, as each day was just beginning to open its eyes and stretch for the festivities to come, but as the day wore on the crowd came to life in response to three young men flying over 25 feet in the air – complete with single, double and triple forward and back flips, spins, twists and gyrations up to and over a wall between the two trampolines.

The 2010 Mumfest gymnastic trampoline performance featured 2000 national champion Nathan Gibeault, 27; fourth-ranked U.S. national team finalist and Olympic hopeful Sean Kennedy, 22; and junior national finalist Eric Kennedy, 17, who is representing the United States at a November 2010 international teen competition in France.

The trio’s presentation included individual acts, followed by side-by-side synchronized performances on parallel trampolines to lively music, while wearing Extreme Outfitters exclusive Feelmax “barefoot” shoes that provide a unique combination of gentle touch, yet protecting the skin from cuts or abrasions. Other stunts added cumbersome skis with boots and even snowboards.

Kennedy said he was pleased with the event, the community and how the two Extreme teams worked together to present a positive message to the public. “We’re really happy how the weekend turned out,” Kennedy said. “You guys (at Extreme Outfitters) support the troops and the area has a strong military presence – with service members and their families.” “We like to encourage a healthy lifestyle, discipline and safe practices on the trampoline and we like to raise awareness about this Olympic gymnastic sport,” Kennedy said.

Powertraveller Portable Chargers

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Powertraveller is a European company that produces a full line of charging devices. While they aren’t a “tactical” company, you are going to find products that are perfect for use in the field whether on duty or just having fun. Each one of their chargers is intended for a slightly different application but can be used in conjunction with other powertraveller devices to increase versatility.

The powermonkey-eXplorer can power most cell phones (96 hours), iPods (40 hours) and other mp3/mp4 players (6 hours), PDAs (48 hours), as well as portable game devices (5 hours). Versatility is it’s middle name and can be recharged via its integral solar panel, AC, or USB. Additionally, it comes with multiple tips called monkey nuts to accommodate various devices as well as adapters for use in 150 countries.

The MiniGorilla is designed to be used with the latest netbooks, but can also charge an iPad when used with the gorilla-pad connector. It also has use with camcorders, e-readers, and even many cell phones. It can be charged via AC or with the separate solargorilla charger. Think of the solargorilla as a big brother to the powermonkey.

The powergorilla can charge any device up to 24 volts, but the real draw is the extra 2-5 hours of power that it can add to your laptop or Macbook as well as its ability to charge multiple devices. It can be charged via AC or with the separate solargorilla charger, and like the minigorilla requires the gorilla-pad connector to charge an iPad.

You can pick up the powertraveller products at Extreme Outfitters.

SOFIC 2010 – It’s a Wrap

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Brought to you by Extreme Outfitters

The mood was lighthearted and foot traffic was brisk on third and last day of the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference Thursday.

More than 300 vendors worked under the banner “Accelerating the Force” and welcomed long lines of anxious patrons who sought refuge from the heat in the air-conditioned Tampa Convention Center.

Richard “Dick” A Cheniae of Bates boots from Virginia Beach, Virginia, said he was disappointed in the overall low turnout.

Bernadette Sumner of Wide Open Industries of Exton, Pennsylvania, said that although the number of patrons was limited, those who did show up were interested in their blast mitigating vehicle seats.

“We had lots of vendors,” Sumner said. “It was good for networking.”

Larry Connolly of Moorefield Training Center from Moorefield, West Virginia had his own challenges promoting a new business that offers firearms training, combat driving and special tactics.

“We’re a new company, so we hope to get our name out there,” Connolly said. “We’re making good contacts and meeting with some clients face-to-face as opposed to email or on the phone. We’re such a comprehensive company that we can support everything they need to do.”

Moorefield’s strengths include a positive location – only two hours drive away from Washington, D.C. – and the fact that they conduct all their training on a single piece of property.”

“The biggest challenge is trying to explain who we are and what do,” Connolly said. “The turnout was good, (especially) seeing all the different vendors.”

Connolly, like many others, used the opportunity to network with others in the industry to establish collaborative efforts between those who provide goods and services, until they can return next year.

SOFIC Day 2

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Brought to you Extreme Outfitters

The second day of the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference Wednesday saw a surge of patrons at the 10 a.m. opening and again just after lunch.

More than 300 vendors worked under the banner “Accelerating the Force” and welcomed long lines of anxious patrons who sought refuge from the heat in the air-conditioned Tampa Convention Center.

Montgomery Marketing Incorporated of Montgomery, Alabama, teamed up with product associates from Extreme Outfitters of Jacksonville, North Carolina, to highlight Granite Tactical Gear’s line of packs, pouches and sleep shelters.

Hundreds of special operators from the military, law enforcement and contracting community also had a chance to view the Recon series of sleeping bags, Walkstools and pouches and NATO tourniquets and pouches – just to name a few products from Extreme’s over 250 vendors. For more information visit www.tacticaledge.com.

Patron Michelle Kalphat of Army Research Laboratories in Orlando, Florida tested a 60-pound stuffed version of the Granite Tactical Gear Chief Patrol pack and was thankful for her work outs prior to the show.

“That time in the gym paid off,” said Kalphat, who was wearing a dress and tactical high heel shoes.

Elsewhere a team from Princeton Tec lighting from Trenton, New Jersey, was thankful for the increased traffic they experienced on day two of the event, where associate Ryan Ditta saw unique opportunities to network and promote his products.

“We hope to show the customer – the end user – the capabilities that Princeton Tech has,” Ditta said.

Princeton Tec associate David Cozzone said they thought the event went very well.

“We’ve met some very good end users and decision makers,” Cozzone said. “There could be a few more, but we have another day.”

Both Ditta and Cozzone expressed a desire to focus more on the quality of their contacts rather than just the quantity of people they might meet in a large crowd.

“It was definitely busier today more people who trust our brand,” Ditta said. “There were more people (Wednesday than Tuesday) to give us valuable feedback.”

There really weren’t any surprises for the Princeton Tec team, because they have been to literally hundreds of trade shows before.

Still, they still have tasks to perform with goals to achieve.

“The biggest challenge we found is trying to stand out like a little fish in a big sea,” Ditta said. “We have technologically-advanced products that are consistently engineered for this market and we want to find our niche and stand out as a leader.”

“We’re very passionate about the military and anxious to get our products in their hands because we know their lives may depend on it,” Cozzone said.

The networking opportunities between manufacturing, marketing and product developers will likely lead to future collaborations that should have a positive impact on the Special Operations community.

At one such networking event during an after-product-show party gathering Wednesday night, in a popular game of skill, Team Extreme handily beat teams from Princeton Tec and Outdoor Marketing Alliance of Birmington, Alabama, three times in a row for friendly bragging rights – at least for the evening.

The conference exhibit hall is scheduled to be open one final day from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

SOFIC 2010 – Accelerating the Force

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

We are fortunate to have this report from Eric Steinkopff of Extreme Outfitters on the opening day of the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference.

More than 300 vendors were on hand for the first day of the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference that began Tuesday with the theme “Accelerating the Force.”

Long lines of anxious patrons queued up in the Tampa Convention Center’s air conditioned climate-controlled environment, as sweltering upper 90 degree weather drenched passersby with stifling humidity and near record highs.

The opening day of the three-day event revealed vendors of traditional outdoor and tactical gear, from packs and sleeping bags to high-end state-of-the-art information technology developers, with multiple integrated sensors and communications packages.

Exact numbers of visitors were difficult to predict, but the flow of patrons was steady as merchants demonstrated their wares to the curious with time to share.

The networking opportunities between manufacturing, marketing and product developers will likely lead to future collaborations that should have a positive impact on the Special Operations community as a whole and, more specifically, the separate teams and individual operators who put their lives on the line in defense of the country and our way of life.

The conference exhibit hall is scheduled to be open 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

365 Days in Five Fingers

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Five Fingers fever has caught on and they have become wildly popular with the Cross Fit crowd as well as military so when Eric Steinkopff, Director of Government Sales for Extreme Outfitters told me what was going on there I asked him to get something to me. What’s happening is that Extreme employee Erin Totterton is wearing her Vibram Five Finger footwear for 365 days straight. Eric, who wrote this report is a retired Marine and spent a couple of years as a journalist covering the military beat in Jacksonville, North Carolina prior to assuming his current position with Extreme.

Extreme Outfitters employee Erin Tetterton is making waves and raising a few eyebrows by wearing her Vibram Five-Finger footwear for a complete year.
She began April 17, 2010, and recently passed day 30 of her 365 trek.
“I’m wearing my toe-shoes for 365 days – because I can,” said Tetterton, whose husband Todd is a Marine stationed at the Stone Bay complex of Camp Lejeune and supports her endeavor as she posts near-daily blogs on her website www.wherethetoesgo.com with pictures taken from her iPhone as part of a college art photography project.

But Erin is no stranger to the unique looking shoes with fingers, because she has had them in her wardrobe for more than two years already.
“I originally bought them because they look cool and wore them for about two and a half years, just for fun,” Tetterton said. “I really like them and wear them because they’re different. People got to know me as the girl with those funny shoes.”
She wore them during water sports, boating, swimming, sand volleyball and rock climbing.
“I (even) wore them to our wedding,” Tetterton said. “Todd didn’t know until after the ceremony. The dress covered them up, but it made for some really great pictures later.”
This year Tetterton found out that people were running in the Five-Fingers and became interested in the ergonomic benefits of near-barefoot running.
“One of the things was Harvard’s study on collision forces – (that highlights) the difference between forefoot striking and heel striking,” said Tetterton, who added that a forefoot striker is less prone to injury. “The Vibram Five-Fingers encourage you to be a fore-foot striker.”
There are also testimonials by individual long distance runners who were claiming to be running injury-free or with a lower incidence of injuries, so she completed the 5th Annual Run for the Warriors, a five-kilometer run in Jacksonville May 15.
“It’s improved my run time by 20 percent,” Tetterton said.
But it wasn’t always that way.
“I started with the Classics and wore them for the first two years,” Tetterton said. “I think they’re the most ‘barefoot’ feeling of all they shoes, but they can come off in the water. Flows are great for water sports, especially in slightly cooler water and I’m looking forward to trying them under my fins for SCUBA diving this summer.”
“My Sprints are by ‘go-to-shoe – everything from gardening to running, and they stay on in the water,” Tetterton said. “KSOs are comparable my Sprints, but they feel a little more structured and a little more ‘shoe-like.’”

But wearing the interesting-looking footwear has not come without its challenges – such as conveying her message to others who don’t entirely understand.
“Explaining it to people (has been difficult), such as my aunt who loves shoe-shopping – why I’ve limited myself to one style of shoe for a whole year,” Tetterton said. “The only two times I won’t be able to wear them is with roller blades or bicycling cleats.”
All the focus on the Five-Finger footwear has brought about some unintended benefits.
“I donated a bunch of my shoes to charity this year,” Tetterton said. “Since I’m wearing (Five-Fingers), I don’t need them. I’m more interested in what other people around the world are wearing or not wearing.”
Although the summer weather is really just beginning to get hot in eastern North Carolina, late this fall it will be cold enough to warrant wearing one size larger Five-Fingers and special toe socks inside.
“I’m not looking forward to winter,” said Tetterton with a laugh.

To purchase these ergonomic “toe-shoes” known as Vibram Five-Fingers, visit Extreme Outfitters for a 10 percent VIP discount at 102 Western Boulevard, Jacksonville, NC 28546, call the store at 910-355-2118 or visit their website at www.tacticaledge.com.
