We’ve been writing about the amazing Salomon Quest 4D GTX Boots boots for some time. First in Grey, then Brown and now they’re available in Olive! During last weekend’s excursion to Richmond we stopped by REI and lo and behold, there they were.
The color combo is actually Olive, Dark Olive and Black and for those of you in Woodland or Alpine environments this might be just the ticket.
Built on the same last as the Salomon XA Pro 3D, the sole relies on Salomon’s 4D Chassis. The outsole has an ascending lug pattern in the front and a braking pattern in the rear. There’s also a cushioning pad beneath the foot, the chassis to protect against twisted ankles, and then an additional cushioning pad to absorb rocks and roots underfoot (4 layers= 4D). Finally, the boot is also Gore-tex lined.

Mission Ready Equipment had the access to identify an operational requirement for a more arid environment friendly color for the Salomon Quest 4D GTX boot and the foresight to make it happen. They got with the guys at Über SOF (who as far as we are concerned would be Salomon Tactical if there was such a thing) and identified a supply of Quests in Brown manufactured for the European market. Together they worked to convince Salomon to bring the entire stock to the US. Now, they are available to you, exclusively from MRE.
As you can see, they blend well with both AOR1 and MultiCam. The Quest is an awesome boot and is comfortable right out of the box. About two years ago, Salomon introduced the Quest 4D in Grey to a couple of specialized military units. Uber Group, US reps for Salomon took a look at Salomon’s international offerings and came up with the Cosmic in Grey, bringing it right into the US market.
The boots are somewhat similar so the bottom line is; the Quest is sewn construction and the Cosmic is glued. While both integrate running shoe technology, think of the Cosmic as the next step based on construction. In the photo above, you can see the Cosmic in the foreground and the Quest peaking from the back.
Now, this last bit is cool as hell. Rumor has it that the Cosmic is vegan. Now how awesome would it be to know that you are being environmentally and socially conscious while you are hunting down Islamo-fascist terrorists? I mean, you would totally score with the chicks if you let slip “Well sure I terminate with extreme prejudice, but I wear vegan footwear while doing it.”

Early on, we wrote about the Salomon Quest. During the recent inclement weather here in Hampton Roads we wore them during our outings and it jogged our memories. Yes, literally “we”, as we all own a pair.
Quite simply, they rock. Ultra-lightweight, comfortable right out of the box, and waterproof they are favorites around the home office. The boot is built on the same last as the Salomon XA Pro 3D running shoe; their most popular footwear model and is a beefed up “light hiker†that is intended to protect the wearer’s foot in harsh terrain, even while carrying a heavy load. The sole uses Salomon’s 4D Chassis. The outsole has an ascending lug pattern in the front of the sole, and a braking pattern in the rear. Beneath the foot is a cushioning pad, while the chassis protects against twisted ankles, and then an additional cushioning pad to absorb rocks and roots underfoot (4 layers= 4D). In addition to the Grey shown above there is also an Orange variant that may interest Search and Rescue professionals.

Salomon took their most popular Gore-tex lined trail shoe and adjusted the height to protect the ankle. They are lightweight yet keep your feet stable in scrub or on the trail. I have been wearing a pair for a week and appreciate the comfort as well as Salomon’s friction-free lace eyelets. You just pull on the laces and tuck the excess in the pocket.
They are available in two color schemes, Black/Asphalt/Turf (shown) and Detroit/Black/X-Games which are mainly Grey with Orange accents. They will accept paint for those who need the extra camo. It is important to know that Salomons run a little small.
The best place to find the 3D Mid GTX Ultra is Blue Ridge Mountain Sports. As soon as they saw them, they laid in a good supply for units in the Tidewater of Virginia area. For those of you in Hampton Roads be sure to stop by Blue Ridge’s Hilltop store in Virginia Beach were there will be plenty on hand.
RP Tactical has commissioned a Grey version of Salomon’s Quest boot (Part number 590606) to be available for sale March 1st 2009.
The Quest is also available in Orange (Part number 278432) at most outdoor stores.

The Quest’s upper features a full Gore-Tex lining for waterproofing. Aside from fit, what will strike you most about these boots is their ultra light weight.
As the boot is based on the XA Pro 3D and there is also an Orange version available commercially, checking the fit should be possible if you have access to an outfitter. I wear Salomons about a half size up. The toe box is generous in all sizes but I prefer just a little extra room for thick socks. Please remember these are available in Grey exclusively from RP Tactical and there is already one unit who loves them.
