The Special Operations Warrior Foundation has long been our favorite charity going back to when our founder was still on active duty. As we’ve said time and time again, one of the best ways to get folks to give is when you give them something to show for it. SOWF has teamed with Lifecordgear.com to offer two new products including paracord bracelets and key fobs.

The bracelets are available in 5 color options with a choice of plastic buckle or adjustable steel shackle. The key fob is offered in 3 sizes and 5 color combos.

These products are officially licensed by the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and 100% of the net profits for each item sold will go directly to the SOWF. Plus, they are Made in USA!

Supporting the Families of Our Fallen Warriors – UPDATED

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Since last week’s tragic loss of 31 American warriors we have received several queries about where to best give in order to support the families of our fallen servicemen. Due to the joint nature of the force, the issue has become a bit convoluted. This issue has made it difficult for organizers to funnel support in the right directions. However, here is what we can recommend. All are legitimate and have a record of providing support.

The Armed Forces Foundation – They have a history for supporting the families of America’s fallen warrior regardless of branch of service, specialty, or unit. They have pledged to support not only the families SOF personnel but also the Army Reserve aircrew serving as augmentees to the 10th Mountain.

Special Operations Warrior Foundation – Big thanks to the folks at SOWF. Thanks to them, children of all of the casualties will receive a college education. Despite the fact that the aircrew were not SOF personnel, it was a SOF mission and SOWF has determined that it is the right thing to do in supporting the all of the survivors.

Navy SEAL Foundation – They will support the families of the Navy casualties, providing immediate and ongoing support and assistance to the Naval Special Warfare community and their families. This loss has hit NSW particularly hard and they can really use your support. You can also donate via text. Text “SEAL” to 90999 to donate $10 to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

31 Heroes – There is a massive mobilization by the CrossFit community on 3 September to honor our lost warriors. Proceeds from the day’s workout will go to support the families through various charities. If you CrossFit, get involved.

ITS Tactical – They have developed a memorial patch in order to raise funds. As of right now, their proceeds will be donated to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

That Other’s May Live Foundation – Provides post-secondary education assistance to children whose USAF parents or guardians were lost in a personnel recovery mission, training, or other personnel recovery collateral mission. They act much like SOWF but cover all USAF personnel lost in PR missions regardless of specialty.

Also, if anyone wants to donate to the memorial service for CCT
Combat Control Association
PO Box 432
Mary Esther, FL 32569-0432

Special Operations Support Fund – Arc’teryx immediately set up a fund for those in the outdoor industry to support the families. However, donations are open to all. Arc’teryx is working to ensure that the funds received are distributed equitably.

Unfortunately, due to the way SOF is employed, our charitable organizations have been parochial in nature and this is the first instance in some time that both SOF and Conventional troops have been lost while working together on the same operation. This means that, with the exception of the college education provided by SOWF there is not a single source for donations that will affect all of the families. When donating, please remember that this was a joint force and their loss will be felt by all. All families will have immediate needs and most could use assistance well into the future.

Glock to Donate $100,000 to SOWF

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

GLOCK, Inc will make a $100,000 donation to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) during the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) held in Tampa, FL, this coming week, May 17-19. GLOCK, Inc Vice President Josh Dorsey will make the presentation to SOWF in the GLOCK exhibition booth (#404) on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 3:00 pm.

During the past six years, GLOCK will have donated $600,000 to SOWF, a non-profit organization providing college scholarships to the surviving children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel killed in combat or training.

“GLOCK is proud to contribute to organizations such as SOWF, which play such a vital role in providing aide to the families of America’s fallen heroes,” said GLOCK Vice President Josh Dorsey. “GLOCK, Inc. has a long-standing tradition of supporting those that put themselves in harm’s way.”

Accepting the donation on behalf of SOWF will be Col John T. Carney Jr (USAF, Ret), the founding father of Air Force Special Tactics and current President of SOWF; Edie Rosenthal, Executive Director of SOWF, and former recipient of the SOWF Scholarship, Melinda Petrignani.

“GLOCK’s continued support to SOWF over the past six years demonstrates their commitment to supporting the families of wounded and fallen special operations personnel,” said Col John T. Carney Jr., SOWF President and CEO. “With more than 500 children in our program who have yet to reach college age, this gift helps us assure those widows or widowers that the foundation will be around when that young girl or boy reaches college age.”

Melinda is one of more than 800 children of fallen special operations personnel to whom SOWF has provided aide. Her father, Army Ranger PFC Michael Ruddess, was killed in a training accident in 1986 when she was only eight months old. Through the financial assistance from SOWF, Melinda graduated from DePaul University in 2008 with a degree in Business Administration. In September 2010, Melinda joined SOWF where she works with families and students as a Financial Aid Counselor.

GLOCK, Inc donates more than $500,000 each year to causes that benefit those who put themselves in harm’s way to defend the freedom that Americans enjoy.

Help This Couple Realize Their Dream

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

If you are a reader of SSD then this couple is your kind of people. They are trying to win a contest to have their dream wedding. Vying for the $100,000 prize are couples from all over, with stories just as diverse. But out of all of these people, Mike and Ana get our attention and our vote. “Why?”, might you ask? Well that’s simple, she’s an AC-130 Pilot and he is a Combat Controller.

Mike calls in Ana’s Gunship for fire power & Ana makes sure she protects Mike & his guys. We can’t do anything easy, we deployed half way around the world to see each other & will return 1-2 mo. before our Aug wedding.

Our favorite charity, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation gave us the 411 on these two and after reading their wedding plans we knew we had to get the word out.

Family & friends are #1 importance for the wedding, as we cherish people in our lives. Inorder to ensure everyone could make it, we had to make sure we were both home from deployments but before college football season started. #2 is honoring fallen commrades (sic) who aren’t there to celebrate with a remembrance table w/ their names on it. #3 all of our dance $ will be donated to Special Operations Warrior Foundation to provide the children of fallen Special Operations Warriors scholarships.

After reading that how can you not support them?
