That’s a pretty impressive list of ‘heavy hitters’ and innovators in the market today, some of those are kit I use and some make great products I own. Kudos to them, and thanks for reporting the list.
Some heavy hitters stepping away from this mess. Personally never read that magazine. Just another gun mag for geardo’s and armchair commando’s.
Word.
Are they supporting the 2A or is it another example of any dissent being completely smashed? They screwed up and they apologized for it. They can’t get a second change with the gun community? There will come a time – maybe soon – when the 2A crowd is going to need all the help it can get. How many people is this kind of reaction pushing away? How many new people was a hip gun magazine going to attract that might be new to the sporting gun scene? Frankly, I didn’t care much for gun mags until I saw this one. I’m not that interested in SOF or in the next deer gun, and all the SWAT style mags were a little boring. Yeah, it was gun porn, but it was a higher class of gun porn that most. I think we’ll miss the mag when it is gone.
They completely screwed up. It is too bad that we can’t tolerate a diversity of opinions in the gun crowd. It is too bad the advertisers couldn’t send a message that they might not tolerate a 2ns screw up instead of immediately bending over to the vocal facebook/twitter crowd.
Advertiser responses have been pointed at the status of relationship of Editor Jerry Tsai with Recoil not with the overall format/content. As long as Tsai is still involved with Recoil, the above companies will not be associated with. Tsai is PNG.
The apology rebuttal and apologies were worse. No personal accountability nor critical thinking too place. The apology was more akin to finger pointing.
There were 54 firearm / tactical advertisers in Issue No 4
I still haven’t seen the confirmation for AAC, but the Facebook page Dump Recoil Magazine has a thread going for confirmed dumps and suspensions, and it is now a lot longer.
I’ve been making a point of going down the list, contacting each of the 57 advertisers from Issue 4 that have been identified as firearm/tactical. The only ones I won’t contact are the ones who confirm a dump or suspension before I get to them on the list. I’ve sent out a LOT of emails.
Learn from this, folks: Don’t piss off lawyers. We only got through law school by being ruthlessly organized and persistent.
Ouch! That’s gotta hurt…
Because driving a pro-gun magazine out of business is good for us? Because it will help encourage future investors to take a chance on something in the future? Were you taught by a community organizer in law school? Sounds like a page from Saul Alinsky. Never permit dissent.
Not when it comes to 2A! Not giving one inch.
Pro-Money magazine that happens to be about guns, The staff has shown they are obtuse when it comes to the reality of the 2A and each one of their “apologizes” has gone on to reaffirm their point of view that certain guns do not belong in the hands of civilians. “We believe in the 2A and you still shouldn’t be allowed to own this gun” is hardly an apology or the position of a true believer of the 2A.
We don’t need our “friends” throwing us under the bus.
Yeah, screw that magazine, and all the people who worked there. And all their families they were supporting. No second chances for those who don’t agree with everything we agree with.
I guess this could have been a teaching moment where we educated a guy who stepped on his crank pretty severely, but let’s instead turn it into a lesson on what happens when a mob mentality takes over. The gun community is up in arms over what this guy said. Okay, fair enough.
But where this kind of outrage for people who are truly anti 2A? When was the last time any of the people bitching on Facebook bothered to write a letter to an elected official, or send an email to a company who supported, through ad revenue, Oprah or any other anti-gun celebrity? Where is the energy and anger for those who are actively trying to take our guns?
Nope, this is too important. This is the biggest threat we face as gun owning citizens…and we can all pat ourselves on the back when we put that magazine out of business.
In this particular case, I’m behind dumping them. But your comment makes me curious – where is the list of other well known parties that shun firearms related content. Google shopping recently stopped carrying any firearm related items and does not permit ad revenue on firearm related sites, it is against PayPal TOS to purchase firearm parts via their transfers (hence paypal as a gift), etc.
That’s sort of my point. There was a little bit of disgruntled chatter on blogs over Google, but nothing compared to this.
Why didn’t the gun community throw a hissy fit and put Google out of business? Raise your hand if you’re still using Google and/or gmail.
There are much more real threats to our gun rights than what this guy said.
The problem is that this came from within our own ranks. Google has their own agenda. It’s disheartening to see a gun magazine undermine the cause of gun owners. I’m really not being dogmatic here. There’s nothing that the anti-gun crowd would love more than to find that a gun magazine agrees with their position that citizens shouldn’t own certain guns. Talk about supporting the opposition!
Jack,
Well put, my thoughts echo yours exactly. He should be corrected and perhaps mentored, not crucified. This is absolutely ridiculous and, in my opinion, a prime example of how crazy group mentality is. Eating our own is not helping the cause.
I hate to tell the critics of us to think about it this way. The publisher has now come out and said that HK was anti-civi gun. You ok with the lies being published about a gun manufacturer? Not seeing the big picture fellas? Because if you don’t your blind to the negative lies that Tsai and his publisher are now putting out about HK. This could have all been solved with the first apology being sincere. Since then its been lies and blame from Tsai and his publisher. All the pro-gun crowd was asking for was the removal of a non-educated editor. Now I say screw them and hooray for the manufacturers who support the cause.
this needs to double up. Recoil needs to be taught a lesson. We will not allow our 2A rights to be disparaged or spat up by little punk ass gun writers. I wish I had some ads in there so I could pull them too.
If Jerry’s response had been: “Sorry folks, I was all dicked up. Will learn and move on from here.” then this would be a non-issue. But instead he’s playing the blame game and skirting the issue. That’s the mark of someone who is more interested in selling issues than supporting our fundamental right to defend ourselves.
2A comes right after the first. They get to say whatever they want to say, right? By the way, why isn’t anyone mad at H&K? Or does anyone remember back when Ruger used to tow the same line?
Lets keep it real. Recoil is new and different, and a little clumsy, maybe even silly, but I believe that they are firmly on the 2A side.
I don’t. I believe that they are firmly on the side of the dollar.
I strongly agree. It seemed to me to be geared to selling ad space and making money, with some “gun lifestyle” articles thrown in for good measure. Just like the oft compared Maxim. It never quite felt like a magazine created and written by people truly passionate about the topics presented.
I have disagreed with gun mags and written them letters to that effect (SWAT, I’m looking at you), but I never doubted their enthusiasm or passion. I never quite got on board with RECOIL and, in retrospect, I know see why.
With respect to several posting about dissent and debate, why do we need an article supporting restricting the 2a
Gah, hit submit too soon! Oh well, this gist is there.
I agree. And it is evident in the simple fact that fingers are being pointed everywhere else but the source.
Its a shame becuase RECOIL magazine was going somewhere that others didnt.
SWR, now a division of SilencerCo, also dropped advertising as announced in the early letter from Silencerco & SWR on this topic.
Updated, thanks
To those who keep insisting we should all just let it go and move along, really? That is what the hell is wrong with our country now and why our rights are getting eroded slowly every day. Oh well, he just pissed all over the 2nd amendment, but wow look at the pretty pictures let’s just all forgive and forget. Hell NO! I will not just move on and let it be, Tsai screwed the pooch and to just say oh well, I like looking at pretty pictures more than I give a damn about my rights so let him be is a cowards approach. I believe enough in my rights to take a stand against ANY who contribute to the weakening of them. So no, we should not just “let it go ” when someone who represents our community does more for the other sides cause than our own. Be Real.
Very good post Chad. Compromise has done nothing but weaken all of our rights.
All the manufacturers who removed their advertising gained huge points in my book. It shows that they’re serious about what they do, and who they do it for- and are not willing to have their name associated with a magazine who will publish an article such as that, and half assed apologies that only make matters worse. If you fail to see the severity of the article, then you need to evaluate your stance on firearms and the second amendment. If you accept any of the apologies, then you are easy and gullible.
It’s like being “sorta pregnant”, you either are, or you are not.
Same with the 2A!
You either agree that citizens have the right to keep, and bear arms, supporting that position by example, and keeping the faith that the knee jerk reactionary laws of the NFA, GCA, and AWB are/were a complete and utter waste of time.
Criminals will always have guns. Nothing stops that fact. Period.
Its one thing to screw up and apologize, its another to come back and make it worse! This guy had every opportunity to come out and say “hey, I screwed up” but no, he came back and basically said the same thing with some finger pointing.. Sorry but being an editor should come with common sense!
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Jim Zumbo yet, but that is exactly what this story reminds me of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Zumbo
Zumbo stepped on his crank too, and he learned his lesson, and now his career is on the comeback trail. His crime? The following statement:
“I must be living in a vacuum. The guides on our hunt tell me that the use of AR and AK rifles have a rapidly growing following among hunters, especially prairie dog hunters. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these firearms. I call them “assault” rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I’m a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I’ll go so far as to call them “terrorist” rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are “tackdrivers.” Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don’t need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I’ve always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don’t use assault rifles. We’ve always been proud of our “sporting firearms.” This really has me concerned. As hunters, we don’t need the image of walking around the woods carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let’s divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries [sic] and woods.”
Obvioiusly a stupid statement, and he paid the price. It is good that we drop the hammer on quislings who damage the RKBA from within the movement, but at the same time, I would like to see the magazine survive, if for no other reason than the more publications are out there extolling the virtues of firearms ownership and use, the less the left is able to paint us as “extremists” (even though it is THEY who are the extremists). I think that if they can just give Tsai the boot (and anybody else who stuck by that ridiculous statement of his), there is still time to salvage an otherwise viable Pro-Gun publication…..and that would be a good thing.
This is one way for the left to ban guns (yes ALL GUNS) start with “assault” weapons because there is no place for them in “sporting” and tell all the hunters its OK, we don’t care if you keep your hunting tool. That splits some of the gun community from the fight. Then once “assault” rifles are banned then its easier for them to finish off the hunters by building on the assault ban. Even if you don’t care about 30 round mags and semi-auto you better fight for them because that’s only phase 1, don’t be fooled they want to ban every gun.
why would you even blame H&K??
those ‘apologies’ are worthless, especially since its on Facebook
you can say whatevs about Facebook, it stays an informal way of communication
anyway, their mag is sinking, i can already smell the bankrupt
you reap what you sow, or something like that x}
Thanks for the list of companies I won’t be doing business with, this makes it easy.
Nice way to have a knee jerk reaction and sink a magazine that had the potential to swing more non shooters into our camp than we’ve seen in a long time.
What a tool you are GGR. You actually have companies advocating on your behalf and you want to cut of their support. This is the very thing that many people have been hoping for for years, that companies would use their clout to support the rest of us in the RKBA community like Ronnie Barret did when he refused to sell his guns to police forces in states that refused to allow its residents to purchase them. If every gun, ammo, & accessory manufacturer refused to sell to cops any item that was not allowed for sale to civilians our problems would be cleared up pretty darn fast. You can be thankful for the table scraps allowed you but real students of the founder’s intent of 2A know that every firearm owned by the government should be allowed in the hands of the citizenry as a check on government tyranny.
“Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American… The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people” (Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788)
“I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for few public officials.” (George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 425-426)
With 2A supporters like you who needs enemies!
[…] At this point, ITS Tactical, along with many of our friends in the industry, issued public statements with our position regarding the turmoil created by Mr. Tsai’s original published statement and his follow-up on the RECOIL Facebook Page. The following companies stated that they’d pull their advertising in RECOIL. Silencerco, SWR Manufacturing, Panteao Productions, ITS Tactical, Haley Strategic Partners, Truly Tactical, Magpul Industries, Bravo Company USA, Surefire, DSG Arms, TNVC, Vortex Optics, Advanced Armament Corp., ITW Military Products, Mission First Tactical, Ares Armor. Definitely not a list to take lightly as a “Gun Lifestyle” magazine that RECOIL markets themselves as. List provided via Soldier Systems. […]
