SCARPA Defender Alpine Touring Boot

Earlier this year I attended a military mountaineering seminar. One of the issues mentioned was the lack of specialized mountain and ski boots for military applications. Then, at OR just a few weeks ago, I was introduced to some folks at Scarpa who have been building specialized footwear for various international military units.

The SCARPA Defender is an alpine touring boot based on the F1 concept and designed for the demands of high-mountain skiing and climbing. The Defender features a shell, cuff, and tongue made from 100% Pebax, a high performance thermoplastic elastomer. It also incorporates a Tour Lite Tech (TLT) binding system, and uses a Cordura liner. Available in Euro sizes 41-47, the Defender’s product code is 12156/551-Blk-(size). Last but not least, notice the color scheme.

Danner Boots Launches National Media Campaign

Danner boots is launching a national media campaign titled “An American Tradition”. As part of this campaign, Danner has created an ad for their tactical line, featuring the Rivot tactical boot. This and other ads will be featured the on Outdoor Channel, History Channel and CarecoTV. Additionally, Danner will also featuring digital media on major hunt, military, and sports websites, in-cinemal advertisements at select military bases, targeted radio and billboard placements across the country, and ads in key hunt print media.

Outdoor Retailer – Salewa

We’ve covered most of Salewa’s boot offering in the past so we thought it would be cool to mention a couple of their shoes.

Ramble GTX

New for Spring 14, the Ramble is Italian made with Italian leather and the new cutting edge Gore-tex Surround Membrane. This offers something never seen before; a waterproof breathable sole. The membrane is protected by a Kevlar mesh weave.

You’ll definitely see some Mountain DNA in the Ramble GTX, but it’s a casual shoe. There’s lacing to toe, I can’t believe that they are offering an Italian made shoe with Italian leather and a Gore membrane for only $149 retail. Amazing!

Firetail Evo

Redesigned for 2014, the four-year-old Firetail was Salewa’s tech approach shoe. They’ve lightened it a bit and updated to the new three-piece insole. Offered in Gore-tex and non-Gore-tex models in two colorschemes each.

Outdoor Retailer – Adidas

Big news at Adidas is Earth Green. The AX2 Non Gore-tex Mesh, AX2 Gore-tex, AX2 Mid Gore-tex, and Terrex FastX Gore-tex. The Terrex FastX was an 2013 Outside magazine Gear of the Year award winner.

Another new shoe is the Terrex Scope Gore-tex with Stealth Rubber from 5.10. I’m digging the to toe lacing and the Stealth Rubber toe rand. Adiprene midsole for shock absorption. Tactical colors coming in fall.

Outdoor Retailer – Five Ten

The new Guide Tennie Mid incorporates the Stealth Outsole and incorporates a deeper tread than the original Guide Tennie. It offers a higher heal counter and offers a full rubber rand at the toe.

Available mid-February in Tan and Grey.

The low models will be offered in Leather or Canvas.

Additionally, the Water Tennie Mid is now available in Blue as well as Grey. They’ve Lao introduced for the first time a thong. The Flip Off incorporates the stealth MI6 rubber sole.

Exemplar Mid

It uses the same sole system as the Declination that came out year, this Nonwaterproof Mid is highly breathable with a padded collar and 550 cord lacing. It also integrates their Outdoor Essentials concept of incorporating survival aids into the design.

Stream Runner Hybrid

The Stream Runner Hybrid offers the look and performance of a trail shoe but it’s actually a water shoe. It utilizes Vibram MegaGrip compound for traction on slippery surfaces.

It drains out of the Outsole with dual screens as well as the midsole. It also drains from the upper. It utilizes a Fuschia, perforated footbed and elastic laces. It also features perforated foam padding.

TacLace

TacLace is a device designed by two US Marines during a deployment to Afghanistan. It functions as a method for cinching boot laces in a quick and secure manner. The TacLace is available in Black, Coyote Tan, and Foliage Green. The video above demonstrates the installation and function of the TacLace.
