Ghost Shield is a proprietary manufacturing process which allows Angel 7 to embed photochromic material directly into the ballistic polycarbonate which makes up the lenses of the glasses. This process increases the density of the polycarbonate, which means there’s no material to scratch off, and the lenses are also impervious to chemicals, saltwater, sand, and other damaging substances that can be found in an operational environment. The process is also fully automated, which, according to Angel 7, allows them to produce a higher yeld at a lower cost, and 14 times faster when compared to a “flow coated” product.

The features that Ghost Shield offers includes:

– 35% faster transition time when compared to other photochromic products on the market
– 90% clear in its unactivated state when compared to 78% clear from the next closest competitor
– Exceeds MilSpec ballistic requirements

Ghost Shield technology is being adapted to the following areas:

Ghost Shield A.M.T. (All Mission Tactical) – for Ground combat, law enforcement, airfield and flight deck personnel.
Ghost Shield A.M.A. (All Mission Air) – for pilot and aircrew personnel fixed and rotary wing.
Ghost Shield Gridiron – football helmet shields
Ghost Shield Power Sport – smotorcycle faceshields, goggles, and glasses.

Revision Military Showcases Capabilities

Thursday, January 29th, 2015

Revision Military is so much more than eyepro. Over the past several years they’ve purchased a company or three and expanded their capabilities to provide a holistic soldier protection solution. Although they have been involved in USSOCOM’s TALOS program, it was more a conduit to showcase what they’ve done than a driver of innovation. They were already well on their own path when former Commander, USSOCOM, ADM McRaven called on industry to develop an “ironman” suit.

Revision has been way out in front of everyone else bringing this all in house. Hopefully, their hard work will be rewarded.

SHOT Show – FS Range Day – Oakley

Monday, January 19th, 2015

Last Summer I visited Oakley’s home office where they told me about some ground breaking work they were doing on vision studies. They used a specialized pair of glasses to track where an operator’s eyes go. The point of the study was to introduce eye protection that doesn’t block the wearer’s vision as he conducts combat tasks such as shooting and fast roping.

Some of that research has been made practical in the Tombstone. This new design is designed specifically for the shooting community. Not only is the Lens shape of the Tombstone designed to offer maximum visibility (120 deg FOV), but they’ve incorporated the Prizm lens which works in a wide variety of light conditions.

In this frameless design, the temple pieces attach directly to the lens via a new patented one-button quick change Mechanism. You don’t have to smudge up the lenses and it’s as easy as swapping out a magazine. There are also two lens shapes with this initial launch; the Reap (larger of the two) and Spoil. Additionally, you can get them in a wide variety of lens colors aside from Prizm.

Oakley Releases New SI Ballistic Det Cord Sunglasses

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

The SI Ballistic Det Cord Sunglasses are the latest in Oakley’s line of SI ballistic eyepro. Designed with a low-profile look which is intended to work equally well on and off the field, the Ballistic Det Cord meets or exceeds impact and optical requirements per ANSI Z87.1 2003/2010, as well as ballistic requirements per MIL PRF 32432. The full release can be read below:

OAKLEY STANDARD ISSUE EXPANDS LINE OF BALLISTIC EYEWEAR WITH SI BALLISITC DET CORD

High Impact Meets Low Profile

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. – Oakley Standard Issue (SI), a division of Oakley, Inc., today announced they have expanded their line of ballistic eyewear to include the new SI Ballistic Det Cord ® – covert in appearance, but built for aggressive environments.

Oakley’s history of working with the U.S. Armed Forces, Law Enforcement and government agencies to develop products that prove critical in the field goes back more than 20 years. Specifically, Oakley SI has 29 items currently listed on the Special Operations Eyewear Program (SOEP), and numerous eyewear platforms listed on the APEL product list. With the introduction of the SI Ballistic Det Cord, Oakley has developed another model that meets the impact fragmentation requirements of MIL PRF 32432 and ANSI Z87.1-2010.

The Det Cord is engineered to meet the needs of Military, Law Enforcement, and Shooting Sports. The eyewear comes with a rubberized Unobtanium ® nose piece for a secure fit, comms compatible ear stems, and scratch resistant outer and anti-fog inner coatings. Oakley also added Prizm lens technology to the SI Ballistic Det Cord, which delivers increased contrast, reduced eye fatigue and faster target acquisition in the shooting environment. All of these features make them one of the most “combat equipped” daily-wear glasses made.

“The Det Cord was developed in response to a rapidly changing Military environment,” says Drew Wallace, Oakley’s Military Product Manager. “Today’s Special Operation Forces are no longer simply concerned with the finish. It is the gathering of intelligence in a clandestine environment, while prepared for worst case scenarios, that will define success.”

With a restrained look, the SI Ballistic Det Cord has a low profile that will allow users to work within a variety of situations, while knowing they have the best in impact protection.

In order for the SI Ballistic Det Cord to meet the MIL PRF 32432 ballistic impact requirement, the glasses are hit with a 0.15 caliber, 5.85 grain, T37 shaped projectile at approximately 640-660 feet per second. The eyewear must remain intact throughout the test, without experiencing any dislodged components or fracture to the lens. This test is reflective of the hazardous conditions the user might experience when exposed to ballistic fragmentation.

Oakley SI Ballistic Det Cord sunglasses:

  • Meet or exceed impact and optical requirements per ANSI Z87.1 2003/2010
  • Meet or exceed ballistic fragmentation requirements per MIL PRF 32432
  • Lenses block 100% of UVA/UVB & harmful blue light up to 400 nm wavelength
  • Have advanced anti-fog coating and hard coating for scratch resistance
  • Are composed of Plutonite®, Oakley’s high purity optical-grade polycarbonate
  • You can check out the SI Ballistic Det Cord Tech Sheet here.

The SI Ballistic Det Cord is available starting today, November 18th, on OakleySI.com.
