Sunday, April 10th, 2011

Established in 1917, ACW (American Cord and Webbing) is a custom design manufacturer of plastic and metal fasteners as well as elastic and non-elastic narrow textile webbing and cord products. In addition to expanding their custom design and manufacturing facilities to bring all of these efforts under one roof, they have also added two key team members, Wendy Horowitz and Stephan Yardan who will support their custom design product development effort.

Mark Krauss, ACW president, commented, “Providing customers with product solutions that help them meet industry challenges means formulating a highly skilled team that understand business trends, can anticipate customer’s needs and deliver innovative products. Wendy and Steve complement our custom design, problem-solving approach in the best possible way.”

ACW had this to say about Ms Horowitz and Mr Yardan:

Wendy Horowitz is an expert on specialty fibers for narrow fabric applications. A textile engineer and business development specialist, she has helped ACW enter highly technical, performance driven markets. Her clear understanding of customers’ needs, along with her creativity, has led to the developments of several new product lines. Wendy is also Chairperson of the Safety & Technical Products Division of IFAI.

ACW has had a long standing relationship with industrial designer Steve Yardan. Steve’s design and business understanding has helped ACW co-develop fresh concepts into product realities. As a result, this strategic alliance allows ACW to service customers with in-house, rapid product development followed by production for numerous markets including categories for military use.

Joseph Marak Found Guilty in Bribery Trial

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

After a week long trial, former Army acquisition official Joseph Marak was found guilty today in US District Court in Greenville, North Carolina of 35 counts including one count of extortion and 17 counts each of bribery and receiving a gratuity from a company doing business with a government entity while being an official with said entity. The offenses occurred while Marak oversaw the CASEVAC program that provided medical equipment to the US Army Special Operations Command, headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The charges stemmed from an investigation that was prompted by a lawsuit between S.O.Tech and Skedco concerning alleged violations of Intellectual Property rights. Certain facts were released during this lawsuit that led the Government to pursue an investigation. Right now, we do not know the official status of the law suit.

When asked about their involvement in the case, S.O.Tech’s attorney provided us with this statement.

James Cragg, the owner of So-Tech, testified as a prosecution witness in the criminal trial of Joseph Marak for bribery and extortion. Cragg testified that Marak, while employed by the federal government, had pressured him to promise Marak a job with So-Tech after Marak left the government, which Cragg refused to do. Cragg also testified that Marak began asking for “royalties” for contracts that had been awarded to So-Tech, a request Cragg also refused. Cragg said that Marak forced him to transfer So-Tech’s patent rights for a medic’s IV pack to its competitor Skedco as a condition for continuing to supply USASOC with other products. Cragg testified that the So-Tech lawsuit against Skedco and Marak in Oregon instigated the criminal investigation and prosecution of Marak in North Carolina by the federal authorities. Other industry witnesses testified for the prosecution as well. Today, the federal jury convicted Marak on all 35 counts of his indictment.

SORD USA – It’s On

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

The US subsidiary of the Australian gear company SORD (Special Operations Research & Development) has been around for awhile but it was more of a distributor. Now, all of that has changed with the launching of a production facility in Kentucky. SORD was originally founded by Australian Special Forces veterans and SORD USA is no different. In fact, you may have noticed some of the clothing and equipment being used by Jason of RedbackOne Training. It was manufactured by SORD and together they provide a single solution for both tactical equipment and training.

At the official opening of the 15,000 sq. ft. facility in Frankfort, Kentucky on March 16, Kentucky Governor, Steve Beshear, remarked that, “I’m pleased to welcome SORD KY to the Commonwealth as Frankfort’s newest corporate citizen.” “This new manufacturing, warehousing and distribution facility, the company’s first in the U.S., will have a positive economic impact. We’re pleased to partner with SORD in this effort to help bring dozens of new jobs to Frankfort.”

There is a lot of good that can come of this. Aside from the creation of new jobs, SORD has already shown that they are an international player in the Soldier Systems market with their win in the Canadian Modular Fighting Rig. Having a US facility will allow them to compete for US contracts with Berry compliant products. Additionally, they will be able to work more closely with US units to produce specialized kit in much the same manner that the support the Australian military.

Products will initially be available in SORD Base Color (SBC), Black, Multicamâ„¢ and A-TACSâ„¢.

Fugitive Sought in Gun Sight Couterfeiting Case

Monday, April 4th, 2011

According to a story by the Associated Press, and a tip from Tactical Fanboy

An arrest warrant was issued last week for Yongming “Steven” Sui, the 37-year-old chief executive officer of Anaheim California-based Field Sport Inc., who has been charged with counterfeiting about 700 EOTECH gun sights and 200 magnifier systems for sale online, with a retail value of about $475,000, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

It is believed he is in China. He faces two felony counts of manufacturing and selling a counterfeit mark and possession of an assault weapon. His business partner Isaac Cheuk Hang Tse, 65, and office manager Pao Sheng Yang, 34, were arrested last week and face the same charges. They are slated to be arraigned April 22.

We have mentioned counterfeit products in the past and how deadly they can be for military, LE and other tactical users. Last time it was counterfeit boots and the time before that tourniquets. This time it’s sights. It is imperative that individual purchasers buy quality products from reputable dealers. It is equally crucial that acquisitions personnel for units and agencies verify that the equipment they are buying is the real thing and actually meets the requirements of the end user. It is too easy for a credit card holder to be duped into purchasing look-a-like items because they are saving a few bucks. Once again, purchase from reputable sources of supply and verify the items are correct upon receipt.

In Other FGI News

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

In addition to EOTAC falling off the face of the earth earlier this week, Freedom Group Inc filed on Friday, April 1st to withdraw their IPO bid with the SEC. Instead, they may do a private offering of stock. Cerberus owned FGI initially filed their intent to seek an IPO in October of 2009 but has faced several challenges since then including the resignation of CEO Ted Torbeck last year. Cerberus brought in Robert Nardelli, the former CEO of Chrysler and Home Depot, to serve as interim head of FGI. Readers may have heard of Nardelli who helmed Chrysler until they filed for bankruptcy protection. That is one hell of a track record. How do these guys keep getting hired by different companies? Whatever happened to a captain going down with his ship?
