SureFire Introduces Maximus Vision Headlamp With Warm White-Light LED

Monday, June 9th, 2014

Fountain Valley, CA — The new rechargeable SureFire Maximus Vision variable-output headlamp features a high-efficiency white-light LED that delivers 450 maximum lumens of warm, yellow-hued light — similar to the light produced by incandescent tungsten lamps. This warmer beam color, which appears less blue to the human eye than light from a typical LED, renders colors more accurately, helps reduce eye strain for some users, and better penetrates dust and fog, making it ideal for medical use, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), and many industrial applications.

The SureFire Maximus Vision is nearly identical to the original SureFire Maximus, except for its warm-colored light and its slightly lower maximum output. Lumen output ranges from one to 450 lumens and is controlled via a large knurled dial that permits easy one-handed output selection, even if your hand is gloved or numbed by the cold. The Vision’s beam can also be aimed with one hand to shine precisely where light is needed, since the light assembly rotates up and down 90 degrees.

The Maximus Vision utilizes a custom reflector to produce a wide, smooth beam optimized for your field of vision, but its beam provides impressive reach at the maximum-output setting. Power is provided by an integral rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to provide years of service; chargers for both wall-type AC outlets and 12-volt DC vehicle outlets are included. A handy fuel gauge on the headlamp lets you know the battery-charge status at a glance, and a long-running SOS beacon provides an extra margin of safety should you ever get lost or stranded and need to signal for help. Constructed from tough, lightweight magnesium, the SureFire Maximus Vision thrives in the Great Outdoors, but its vision-friendly beam color and cost-effective rechargeable power source also make it ideal for everyday-use by industrial and tactical professionals, as well as anyone who needs a powerful, reliable headlamp. The no-chafe, fine-weave headband and moisture-wicking Breathe-O-Prene® forehead pad will fit over a bare head, a hat, and most helmets, making the Vision extremely comfortable to wear for extended-use applications.

The Maximus Vision has an MSRP of $275.00 and is available for purchase through authorized SureFire dealers, by calling SureFire at 800-828-8809 or visiting www.surefire.com.

SOFIC 2014 – CORE Survival’s New HEL-STAR F2

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

The new HEL-STAR F2 is a indent iffy friend or foe light system. Based on the footprint of the HEL-STAR 6 strobe, it consists of a field programmable strobe light and User Feedback Module Buzzer Pad. The UFM is attached by a removable cable to the strobe and when the strobe is interrogated by an IR laser, the UFM buzzes giving a silent, yet tactile alert. That let’s you know that friendlies are in the area. In testing, the system has detected IR Lasers at 800m. The UFM can be placed anywhere in the helmet for comfort.

Firelance Media – REVIEW: The Switchback By Thyrm And Costa Ludus

Friday, May 16th, 2014

The guys over at Thyrm, manufacturer of the SwitchBack, shared with us a recent review by on Firelance Media of the Costa design, which they developed in partnership with Costa Ludis. Occasionally, we like to share content from others on the blog space, so here’s the review in its entirety. Read it over and be sure to tell the original author what you think.

When I was out at SHOT SHOW, I had a few minutes to catch up with Chris Costa and he told me about a new product coming out from Thyrm, called the Switchback. A few weeks later, Andrew Frazier, owner of Thyrm shipped me two versions of it, a small size for a light like the Surefire EB1, and a large version, for a light like the Surefire Fury.

I’ve been carrying the Switchback daily for about 2 months and I really like what the product has to offer. Check the video below for my full review.

You may have seen an article come out recently from David Reeder at Recoil Magazine outlining his experiences. If you haven’t read that article, do it right after watching this video. It explains a lot of the finer points of the buzz surrounding the Switchback.

TL;DR

In a nutshell, the Switchback is a good product that is worth purchasing and for about $20 you can try it out and not have buyer’s remorse. I really like the thought that went into the design and I’m going to keep one on my Fury for now. I’ll probably find myself switching it with the Raven Clip depending on the day. I have quite a few low light classes coming up, including shoothouse and vehicle classes and my goal is to really put it to the test while under stress. Most of us don’t practice low light techniques enough as it is. Buying a Switchback is not going to suddenly change your world. What it WILL do is give you a solid piece of gear for your pocket light and it will make you practice your light techniques more. To me that’s worth the price.
