MDM 18 – WL Gore & Assoc

Tuesday, September 25th, 2018

Most people know WL Gore & Assoc for their flagship product, the ePTFE membrane used in Gore-Tex. Over the past few years, we’ve seen them introduce the ePTFE technology into other areas including chemical warfare protective suits, woven fabrics for jungle uniforms and even insulation layers.

This is a reversible, lightweight loft insulation concept jacket, Gore is showing at Modern Day Marine.

Because we’re at Quantico, this version reverses from Woodland to Desert MARPAT, but other versions can be manufactured, based on user needs.

The low-loft insulation is paired with a nylon face fabric. One of the “sides” of the jacket also incorporates a Windstopper membrane to help shed wind, adding to the insulation value.

Essentially, it’s a fleece replacement. While fleece is comfy and warm, it has several drawbacks. First, it doesn’t compact well, meaning it takes up a lot of space in a rucksack. Considering fleece retains water, takes a long time to dry, and doesn’t do a great job of keeping you warm when it is wet, the case for carrying fleece as an insulation layer isn’t very good.

What’s more, fleece retains dirt, grease and microbes that makes you sick. That means you’ve got to wash it often, and when you do, fleece sheds thousands of plastic micro fibers into the water. It’s just not good for the environment.

Continuous filament insulation on the other hand is water resistant, and with the Gore Windstopper membrane, wind resistant. It also takes up less room when stored. Additionally, Gore’s Quick Pack technology allows air to quickly vent out of the jacket when stowing it.

This concept not only performs better than the fleece it replaces, but it’s a two-for-one item, pulling duty in more than one environments.

MDM 18 – ESSTAC

Tuesday, September 25th, 2018

This is the first time Washington-based esstac has exhibited at Modern Day Marine. This tactical nylon manufacturer started life in a basement in the late-90s as Essential Tactical and has grown to more than 20 employees.

Right now, their most popular product is the Mid-length M4 KIWI Pouch. It is made from 1000D Cordura and incorporates PALS webbing on the front and back to accommodate different attachment systems. Additionally, the interior of the pouch has a Kydex insert to keep the magazine in place until it’s needed.

MDM 17 – Geissele Automatics Super Modular Rail MK16

Thursday, September 21st, 2017

The Upper Reciever in this photo is equipped with the M-Lok standard, Super Modular Rail MK16 Rail, from Geissele Automatics (but in Desert Dirt Color rather than Black), and Super Charging Handle as well as a Daniel Defense Barrel and Gas Block and finished off with a SureFire WarComp. US Army Special Operations Command, as well as others, are said to be looking at this configuration. Despite being referred to by some as “URG-I” (Upper Receiver Group Improved) these are parts, intended to replace existing components, giving their M4A1s an update. The Super Modular Mk16 is not available commercially.

For those of you familiar with the Geissele Gas Pedal, that’s one on the lower. It’s ambidextrous and offers a 45 Deg throw from Safe to Semi. The real magic is when you depress the spring-loaded Gas Pedal, offering momentary Full Auto performance, as long as it is depressed. Let go, and the weapon reverts to Semi Auto mode. It takes a couple of magazines to overcome muscle memory associated with the full 90 Deg throws of a standard Selector, but it’s a very fast transition from Semi to Full Auto. There’s no more fumbling with the Selector, just push the Gas Pedal and Rock and Roll. This is an upgrade DoD should consider immediately.

MDM 17 – Bike Track Modular Plastic Flooring

Thursday, September 21st, 2017

I was walking past Quantico Tactical’s booth and I noticed this flooring sample on one of the tables. For a lot of our readers this is going to seem very mundane, but if you’ve lived in a tent, or worked in a tent, for weeks and months at a time, if you don’t put down some form of flooring, you’re going to be ankle deep in a mess rather quickly.

Bike Track offers stainable, slip-resistant, 1″ and 2″ thick flooring as well as 2″ ICM flooring which features channels for cable management. That too is a big deal. There’s nothing worse than tripping all over power and data cords, except maybe standing in a mud puddle while you brief the CG.

The HDPE 4′ x 3.5′ panels snap together and can be installed without tools. Even better, they have NSNs.
