BSA Introduces SAR Merit Badge

Saturday, June 9th, 2012

The Boy Scouts of America recently announced the creation of a Search and Rescue merit badge. Appropriately enough, they made the announcement during the 2012 National Search and Rescue Conference hosted by the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) and the Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

“The Boy Scouts of America’s motto is ‘Be Prepared’—which sometimes translates to knowing how to respond in an emergency,” said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America. “While we are not encouraging our Scouts to practice these new skills independently, we do want them to be ready to lend a hand to the community, and to each other.”

To meet the requirements of the Search and Rescue merit badge, Scouts must complete a series of nine requirements relating to SAR fundamentals such as:
– The process and safety methods of working around specialized teams such as aircraft, canine, and aquatic rescue teams
-Identifying differences between search and rescue environments, such as coastal, wilderness, rural, and urban landscapes
-Determining when Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) and latitude and longitude (Lat/Lon) should be used

Scouting officials have stated that earning the badge will not qualify a Scout as a trained searcher. In a press release, Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America related, “The Boy Scouts of America’s motto is ‘Be Prepared’—which sometimes translates to knowing how to respond in an emergency. While we are not encouraging our Scouts to practice these new skills independently, we do want them to be ready to lend a hand to the community, and to each other.” Regardless, those skills will serve Scouts well in their lives.

Several SSD sponsors are working on this project. Smith Optics, Magpul and Crye Precision along with the UK’s Edgar Bros have banded together to help the Hot Shots Calendar project generate revenue for injured US & UK Service men and women.

Please remember, you can purchase a 2012 calendar, posters and cards at www.hotshotscalendar.com. 50% of the proceeds are donated to the UK based Help for Heroes.

LoD on D-Day

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

NRA’s Life of Duty wanted to share something with our readers. In honor of today’s 68th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, they sent us a link to a video that was originally created by the U.S. Army in 1969 to relay the battle action of the landing at Normandy and the fierce combat that took place to overcome “Fortress Europe”.

D-Day: June 6, 1944
Description:
June 6, 1944 marks the 68th anniversary of “Operation Overload” – the D-Day invasion where more than 160,000 allied troops landed on a 50-mile stretch of French Coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. The invasion led to the deaths of more than 9,000 allied forces, but the victory resulted in a significant turning point for Europe’s history. Today, we would like to honor the allied forces that participated in the invasion by sharing a film created by the U.S. Army in 1969. In this film, the drama and battle action of the landing at Normandy is portrayed along with the fierce combat that took place to overcome “Fortress Europe” (compliments of the National Archives).

The Asymmetric Warrior Association (AWA) held its Fourth Annual Golf Tournament and Fundraiser at Renditions Grand Slam Experience located in Davidsonville, Maryland on May 10th, 2012. The AWA was formed in order to foster camaraderie among all ranks of the Asymmetric Warfare Group and support scholarships and charitable donations. This year, AWA raised awareness of Wounded Warrior and Transitioning Soldier issues and provided a check for $2,000 to the Armed Forces Foundation. AWA also plans to present a $2,000 check to Homes for Our Troops and award several college scholarships to AWA dependents. These donations could not have been possible without the support of AWA’s corporate sponsors that included: Vision Technologies, Inc., Heckler & Koch, Beretta, Knight’s Armament Company, Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense Company, Booz/Allen/Hamilton, Nike Golf, Chick-Fil-A, Tranter Graphics, and Spyderco.

AWA President, Bill Ivey, says thank you to a wounded warrior from Bethesda, Maryland’s Transition Center during the Award’s Ceremony at the end of the Golf Tournament and Fundraiser on May 10th, 2012.
