Support Battling Bare

Sunday, June 3rd, 2012

Battling Bare. Comprised of a different sort of warrior, helping husbands heal from PTSD. They use tasteful, moving pictures to get their message across. Consider supporting them and please: if you comment, keep it tasteful. To do otherwise is to heap insult on top of injury, and frankly is missing the point altogether. These ladies are bringing an entirely different perspective to combat related PTSD; they’re without a doubt worthy of your support.

Broken by battle…
Wounded by war…
My love is FOREVER–to you this I SWORE.
I WILL:
Quiet your silent screams…
Help heal your shattered soul…
Until once again, my love…
YOU ARE WHOLE!
Battle bare.

TacJobs – Veteran Central

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Are you a Veteran and looking for somewhere to network and maybe find a job? While researching Veteran suicide with his brother-in-law Paul McDonald, Veteran Central founder Jonathon Lunardi learned how challenging it can be for service members to return to civilian life and earn a living. Together, they created Veteran Central, a job resource and development network exclusively for Veterans.

They work with Navy Veteran Michael Barrett who serves as the site’s Director of Sales to provide information on job seeking as well as resources for psychological support.

They’ve also created a job listing board where vacancies are peer-reviewed and made available to Veterans. Don’t worry. One of the things they take into consideration is the job level. The site has a decidedly blue collar feel many will be comfortable with and the jobs are the kinds of things you can step into. You don’t need a college degree or years of experience in some arcane subject to get hired here. These are the types of things you pick up in the service and Veteran Central wants you to get a job.

Check it out. It might be just the thing you’ve been looking for.

Check out the King Joffrey Target from Red Bubble. It’s really art rather than a true target but it is pretty funny.

VIPER Gets Political Fighting for Veteran’s Jobs

Monday, May 28th, 2012

We’ve mentioned VIPER before. The Veterans Industry Program for Employment Reintegration is a charity sponsored by S.O.Tech and it found itself center stage this last week at Los Angeles’ City Hall. LA was voting to become the largest city in the US to ban single use plastic bags. This is a move which was vehemently opposed by plastics industry lobbyists. One of their main counter arguments was that American plastics jobs would be lost. Interestingly, VIPER’s Vets were called to the microphone to talk about the jobs that have already been gained in their sewing program, Green Vets Los Angeles. GVLA is a program of the VIPER non-profit set up to sew reusable cloth shopping bags. Most of the work is accomplished at their facility right in the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hospital. VIPER Founder Jim Cragg said the program was originally set up for Vets to sew and assemble medical kits for troops going into harm’s way as a tool to help them feel that they were once again serving society, and that working on bags to save the environment was a logical move to help the vets continue to serve their community while rejoining the work force. The bags are assembled from recycled materials and have been a big hit across the LA area. In an environment that many would call liberal, Veterans have found a way to go back to work and make a difference by working in harmony with the local economy. Good on Green Vets LA and VIPER.
