ORSM – Slumberjack Roadhouse Tarp

One of Sumberjack’s new priducts for OR Summer Market is so big, they couldn’t actually set it up in the booth but rather had to rely on a large billboard along the side of their booth. The Roadhouse Tarp was designed to be used in conjunction with a vehicle for overland camping use.

The Roadhouse Tarp will come with two beefy steel poles and can be set up alone lean-to or ridge tent-styles or connected off the back of a vehicle with two poles for a wider top or single pole for a more pronounced ridge. It is equipped with a ratchet attachment system to connect to various points on the vehicle included the wheel. I know one of you will say it, so I’ll save you the embarrassment; no, it’s not meant to be driven with the tarp attached to a wheel.

Warrior East – NEMO Equipment Modified Moki Prototype

Developed for testing in extreme cold weather, this modified version of NEMO’s Award winning Moki mountaineering tent, has no floor in order to save weight and avoid condensation issues associated with flooring in that environemnt. However, it’s cool to see MultiCam Alpine used for a tent.

This shelter is not available for purchase. Lessons learned will be integrated into future NEMO products.

Adventure Medical Kits – SOL Escape Bivvy

While there’s a very fitting definition for the acronym SOL but to Adventure Medical Kits it stands for “Survive Outdoors Longer.” And yes, I know, we traditionally use a single v when we say “bivy” but they dubbed it a “bivvy.” All of that notwithstanding, the Escape Bivvy is a nice bit of kit.

Not only will it keep you warm by reflecting 70% of your body heat back at you, but unlike other survival blankets, it breathes. Another way it is different than many other space blankets is that it Green in color. The material itself is highly water resistant so it won’t absorb water and offers waterproof seams as well as a drawstring hood and side zips so you can use it in a variety of ways. The SOL Escape Bivvy is 84″ x 31″ and weighs 8.5 oz.

Catoma Outdoor – Badger Hybrid

During last week’s SOFIC Catoma exhibited their Badger Hybrid Shelter. It’s the latest addition to their Burrow family of personal shelters and it’s an interesting design combining an integrated frame system with an external pole so that it can be used indoors our out, on a cot or on the ground. Additionally, the Badger Hybrid offered lots of ventilation with zip closures to secure the 70D Ripstop nylon flaps over mesh panels. This construction means you don’t need a fly.

The Badger Hybrid is FR and Permethrin treated. Offered in Coyote or MultiCam, Made in USA or foreign assembly.

NRA – Deadringer Hammock Seat

The Hammock Seat from Deadringer Hunting looks like it might be a great companion for your next field problem. Oftentimes I’ve been out in the woods and there’s nowhere to sit but on the ground. That’s great unless it’s cold or wet. Then, I like to get my butt up off of the ground.

The top Hammock Seat wraps around a tree and there’s a simple pole at the bottom that wedges against the base of the tree. This allows the seat fabric to work like a hammock. The Hammock Seat weighs in at 1 lbs, 11 oz and is available in multiple colors.

Warrior West – NEMO Equipment Tetrapod

Eddie Bauer – Flying Squirrel Sleeping Bag

In our quest to share as many zipper less sleeping bags as possible to our readers, we present the aptly named Flying Squirrel from Eddie Bauer.

The materials are top notch. The shell is a 20D Pertex® Ripstop nylon shell and it features 850 fill Stormdown® insulation. I allow like the crossover flap design which goes way down to knee level making it much easier to get in and out of.

For tactical use, it’s got one glaring issue; the color. Pimento and Black aren’t perfect, but the concept is awesome. I bought one of these 40 degree bags for one of my sons and he’ll be taking it out this weekend for a test drive. He’s already used it for a night in the couch and really liked how well he could vent, but I want to hear how it works put for a night in a hammock.
