Catoma Outdoor – Badger Hybrid

Wednesday, June 1st, 2016

During last week’s SOFIC Catoma exhibited their Badger Hybrid Shelter. It’s the latest addition to their Burrow family of personal shelters and it’s an interesting design combining an integrated frame system with an external pole so that it can be used indoors our out, on a cot or on the ground. Additionally, the Badger Hybrid offered lots of ventilation with zip closures to secure the 70D Ripstop nylon flaps over mesh panels. This construction means you don’t need a fly.

The Badger Hybrid is FR and Permethrin treated. Offered in Coyote or MultiCam, Made in USA or foreign assembly.

NRA – Deadringer Hammock Seat

Saturday, May 21st, 2016

The Hammock Seat from Deadringer Hunting looks like it might be a great companion for your next field problem. Oftentimes I’ve been out in the woods and there’s nowhere to sit but on the ground. That’s great unless it’s cold or wet. Then, I like to get my butt up off of the ground.

The top Hammock Seat wraps around a tree and there’s a simple pole at the bottom that wedges against the base of the tree. This allows the seat fabric to work like a hammock. The Hammock Seat weighs in at 1 lbs, 11 oz and is available in multiple colors.

Eddie Bauer – Flying Squirrel Sleeping Bag

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

In our quest to share as many zipper less sleeping bags as possible to our readers, we present the aptly named Flying Squirrel from Eddie Bauer.

The materials are top notch.  The shell is a 20D Pertex® Ripstop nylon shell and it features 850 fill Stormdown® insulation.  I allow like the crossover flap design which goes way down to knee level making it much easier to get in and out of.

For tactical use, it’s got one glaring issue; the color. Pimento and Black aren’t perfect, but the concept is awesome. I bought one of these 40 degree bags for one of my sons and he’ll be taking it out this weekend for a test drive. He’s already used it for a night in the couch and really liked how well he could vent, but I want to hear how it works put for a night in a hammock.

How About A Zipperless Sleeping Bag?

Monday, March 21st, 2016

Yep, it’s been done plenty of times, a sleeping bag with no zipper.  But the Nozipp uses magnets to keep the bag closed in cold weather, yet allow you to get right out without snagged zippers.

Additionally, the Nozipp boasts a “Comfortable Temperature Range” of 15°F to 65°F  because of the overlapping flaps design which allows the user to vent the bag in warmer weather yet snuggle up with double insulation over the torso.  That versatility also allows for extra room inside the bag when needed, like to keep gear warm.

Eagles Nest Outfitters CamoLink Sleep System XL

Tuesday, March 8th, 2016

If you’re looking for a turnkey hammock shelter, the CamoLink Sleep System XL from ENO may be the one for you. I’ve used ENO hammocks in the past and really like them, but then I’ve had to piece together the other items needed to go from hammock in the backyard to actual backcountry shelter.

This kit, available through Tactical Distributors incorporates the CamoNest XL Hammock, Atlas Camo Suspension System, Guardian Bug Net, ProFly Camo Rain Tarp, and a set of tarp stakes.

The CamoNest XL hammock is made from a breathable 70D nylon taffeta, yet will accommodate up to 400 lbs. The material is also pretty quiet unlike some nylon shelters. The XL hammock is 9’4″ X 6’2″, making it their largest model. The ENO Camo ProFly is made from the same material. While ENO’s hammocks are offered in a wide variety of colorschemes, in this instance, it’s in a forest digital print rich with earth tone greens and Browns.

Old Grouch’s Military Surplus – Poncho

Tuesday, February 16th, 2016

It seems the US military has slowly gotten out of the poncho business which has dried up their availability on the surplus market. Instead, we see import models which don’t quite live up to US-GI quality. Yet, demand remains. Old Grouch’s has found a new manufacturer to offer American made ponchos to their customers. They’ve also made some updates to the design.

The poncho is a multipurpose item that can be used for a wide variety of applications. Not least of which, is as a garment to keep you out of the weather. I don’t know how many nights I’ve slept underneath a poncho hooch, one of the lightest and most versatile shelters I ever used while in the Army. There are so many ways to pitch it. It’s an item that belongs in everyone’s toolbox.
