Magpul Dynamics DMR/SPR AAR

Monday, September 2nd, 2013

Recently, Stoney Doughty from ATA Tactical shared this AAR with us from his attendance at the Magpul Dynamics Designated Marksman Rifle/Special Purpose Rifle course. We hope you find this useful.

This July I was able to attend the Magpul Dynamics Special Purpose Rifle/Designated Marksmen Rifle Class in Yakima, WA. I attended because I wanted to gain a better understanding of the semi-automatic rifle system when used as a designated marksman. I felt this would enable me to better instruct my Reserve Component Soldiers in achieving the maximum usability from their issue weapons. Additionally I felt this class would increase my weapons and shooting knowledge for my civilian job with ATA Tactical. The following are my thoughts and impressions from the course.

New Paul Howe Video from Panteao: Civilian Response to Active Shooters

Friday, August 30th, 2013

PMR049_DVD_Cover

Columbia, SC, August 28, 2013 – Responding to an active shooter scenario up till recently has been looked upon as only something law enforcement personnel would do. But often the first responder to an active shooter is the civilian that happened to be at the right place at the right time. Being able to respond sooner to an active shooter can save lives. In this video Paul Howe will prepare you for that.

Paul is a high-risk training instructor that served 20 years in the US Army, ten of those in Special Operations. He served as a Tactical Team Leader and Senior Instructor while assigned to Army Special Operations. During his tour in special operations he was involved in several combat actions. One of the most notable was the battle of Mogadishu that was later portrayed in the motion picture Black Hawk Down.

In this video, Paul takes you step-by-step through the mindset of an active shooter situation. He reviews gear you need like bags, holsters, and lights. The best choices for a weapon platform and medical supplies. Then Paul takes you through exterior contact, room CQB, hallways, hallway intersections, linking up with others, shooting through glass, and more. An active shooter event is a fact of life. Now you can be prepared.

The DVD is available for pre-order from the Panteao website. The video will be available streaming to Panteao subscribers shortly.

Iron Hammer Armory – 1st Annual ‘Circle The Wagons’ Field Training Event

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013

Circle The Wagons

Iron Hammer Armory is hosting the First Annual ‘Circle the Wagons’ field training event in Byers, Colorado on October 19th and 20th. Over 20 introductory firearms and tactical courses will be available over the two-day period. Instructors include members of Rockwell Tactical Group, professional shooter Dani Bryan, and members of the American Centurion Network. In addition to the courses, there will also be timed events with cash/prize awards. Registration includes single course, day pass, and weekend pass options; day and weekend passes are limited. Further details, including a full list of courses, pricing, and class requirements can be found here.

Note: 30 rounds mags are legal to own in Colorado, and legal to use. The misconceptions about Colorado ridiculous new law is the driving reason for Circle the Wagons. Colorado law bans the TRANSFER of hi-cap mags, not their use or possession. As long as you “owned” them prior to July 1st of this year, you are legal to use them.

Trigger Time Launches New Website

If you’ve been stationed at or trained near Fort Bragg, you’ve probably heard of Trigger Time. Established in 1991 by Thomas J Bullins, Trigger Time is a range facility located near Carthage, NC. Although spartan, it is well maintained and has been continually improved over the years. In addition to an in house cadre of instructors, Trigger Time is often host to other guest instructors.

Recently, longtime SSD friend and graphic artist Travis Getz redesigned the Trigger Time logo. I asked Travis about how he looks at these design projects and he related this:

My philosophy with small business web design is to use tools that are super-simple and allow the business owner (or their admin person in this case) to maintain the site themselves (they can edit their own content, I just do the initial design), cutting out the hassle of dealing with an external web design firm.

I like this approach and it sounds like an interesting option for other small business owners.

TacStrike CPaSS Target Stand

CPaSS

The TacStrike CPaSS, Carrier: Portable and Self Staking, is designed as a target stand that’s portable and usable in various environments and conditions found at ranges. It features a three-legged self-staking design, or if the ground is too hard the legs can simply be weighed down with sandbags like any other target stand. The third leg collapses into a carrying handle, and is designed so that one third leg can be used to carry multiple CPaSSs in a rack configuration. The CPaSS uses the TacStrike standard upright pockets that can accept 1″x2″ or 2″x2″ uprights without wobble because of the integrated 9/16″ hex bolt.
