5.11 Announces Acquisition of Beyond Clothing

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

5.11 Tactical has literally just announced the purchase of Beyond Clothing which includes the custom brand Beyond Tactical. This announcement comes right on the heels of Rick Elder’s move to 5.11 to spin up a new Special Operations focused business unit. So for you guys who kept asking me what Rick was going to do over there and how 5.11 was going to bring Berry manufacturing in and make that leap to the Elite customer, this is what I meant when I said that they had a plan. This is huge news and will affect 5.11 and how it is perceived in the market in untold ways.

Here is their press release –

5.11 Tactical, the global innovator of tactical gear, today announced its acquisition of Beyond, a highly technical performance clothing company that builds custom American-made apparel. The acquisition enhances 5.11 Tactical’s domestic manufacturing, product innovation and rapid prototyping capabilities, while providing Beyond with an expanded infrastructure to meet the global needs of the extreme purpose built customer, such as winter expeditionary teams, alpinists, and Special Operations communities. Industry veteran Rick Elder has been appointed as president of Beyond, which will continue to operate as a separate division of 5.11 Tactical in Seattle, Washington, while Beyond Founder Scott Jones will move into the role of chief designer.

“At 5.11 Tactical we are innovators who make purpose-built gear for the most demanding missions. Investing in Beyond’s continued growth is a prime opportunity to further our leading edge development,” said Tom Davin, CEO, 5.11 Tactical. “Rick Elder adds a unique set of capabilities to our 5.11 product development ecosystem. His U.S. Government, Military and Special Forces service will be a huge asset to the growth of our outdoor channel and our ability to be innovative.”

Rick Elder, a 13-year industry veteran, is charged with leading the rebranding and re-launch of Beyond, building upon the brand’s existing reputation and relationships. As part of the acquisition, 5.11 Tactical will leverage Beyond’s unique manufacturing to create leading edge, innovative products that drive deeper connections among U.S. Military and law enforcement professionals, as well as extreme outdoor enthusiasts.

An example of product innovation can be found in Beyond’s Cold Fusion Shock Jacket. Made from winterweight softshell, Scholler WB-400, this high performance product defines versatility. The Cold Fusion Shock Jacket is available in seven colors for men and women, and like all Beyond products, can be customized to the consumer’s specifications and delivered quickly.

“I’ve been serving the outdoor and tactical communities for more than 20 years, and am committed to take Beyond to the next level. Beyond is a brand that develops customized solutions for extreme users within the outdoor and tactical channels of trade,” said Elder. “5.11 Tactical has greatly enhanced its position by executing this acquisition—its infrastructure will help Beyond reach a global community, but still allow it a unique voice. ”

Elder formerly served as the executive director of Smith Optics Elite Division, where he led the development of the ballistic eye wear program. Prior to Smith Optics, Elder spent 10 years as a US Federal Program Manager, developing equipment in support of the United States Special Operation Command. Prior to, he attained the rank of Sergeant and later, Captain, completing his tour in 2001 within the 75th Ranger Regiment, United States Special Operations Command. Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

A.D.S. Ventures, a public policy, communications and business development firm based in Boston, MA and Washington, D.C., has announced a strategic partnership with the 132 Group, a Virginia Beach based defense consulting group that opens new channels to market for clients, identifies key suppliers, and brings new products to the field.

I’m very familiar with both companies and they have a lot to offer on their own. I’m actually excited to see how this new partnership will benefit industry. You are combining the experience of A.D.S. Ventures specializing in legislative and business engagement with technical expertise of the 132 Group. For companies looking to engage the market in new ways this is a dynamite combination.

A.D.S. Ventures and the 132 Group will leverage their unique skill sets for current and prospective clients, giving them access to new services, and assisting them on virtually every aspect of the product development, funding and market fielding process. Together, they can help companies with product testing, end-user feedback, solicitation responses, grant opportunities, public-private partnerships, business introductions, public policy analysis, coalition building, strategic communications plans and will have spokesperson capabilities available if appropriate. This unique model draws upon the existing strengths, backgrounds and reputations of both organizations.

“It’s a truly unique model that brings together the best of what our companies offer. In a tight economy with uncertain defense budgets, our clients need consultants who understand every aspect of their business and can be fully integrated as part of their team if they hope to develop new technologies, and leverage DoD, federal, state and most importantly, end-user support,” said Chet Atkins, Founder and President of A.D.S. Ventures.

“Our work is complimentary, and this partnership enhances the offering we present to clients within this space. Our goal of providing top quality services to companies working with federal agencies and the DoD remains at the forefront and will only be strengthened by this relationship.” said the 132 Group Founder and President, Bill Jarvis. “Beyond that, it helps us all to better understand the dynamics and challenges clients are facing. I look forward to working with the A.D.S. Ventures team to bring great companies into new markets and get top-quality products into the field. We are excited about this partnership and look forward to a new and very productive relationship.”

The 132 Group was founded in 2011 by Bill Jarvis, a former member of the US Special Operations Community, with the goal of increasing capabilities for our men and women in uniform and enhancing opportunities for those industry partners striving to better serve them. The company helps clients navigate through Department of Defense (DoD) product testing, development and contracting protocols, and utilizes an extensive network of specialized former end-users to ultimately field technologies prioritized by various service branches with the DoD.

A.D.S. Ventures was founded in 1993 by former Congressman Chet Atkins. While in office, Chet was actively engaged in working with DoD to support the needs of soldiers and professional users through investment in improved equipment and uniforms. Over the last 20 years, A.D.S. Ventures has developed a core public policy, communications and business development competency in the fields of domestic manufacturing, personal protective equipment, uniforms and technologies for the DoD, as well as other federal agencies.

“This joint effort will make the value proposition for A.D.S. Ventures and the 132 Group that much stronger,” said Spokewoman for A.D.S. Ventures, Alissa Southworth. “It will enable us to assist in nearly every significant stage of a company’s process as they work to integrate a technology into the field.”

Sneak Peek – ATS Tactical’s 7.62 Split Front Chest Harness

Monday, September 24th, 2012

This harness was designed by an SF friend of ATS for a deploying unit that needed the capability to switch between weapons load outs. Ultimately, they decided on this split front harness to solve that problem. The harness is constructed of 500DCordura with Murdock Webbing’s Jacquard Multicam nylon used for the PALS webbing. Each pouch holds a single 7.62 M14/M1A, SR25, FAL/L1A1, G3, or Magpul LR20 magazine. They are held in by ATS’s bungee retention system, with Murdock Webbing nylon pull tabs. Each side of the harness has a built in 9”x 7” map pocket. To the outside of each side of the rig there are two channels and three rows of PALS webbing. Each magazine pocket of the harness also has two channels and three rows of PALS on its face.

Each side of the harness is 10” x 7”, and the harness is closed by two ITW/Nexus GhillieTEX 1” Fastex side release buckles. Overall width of the harness is about 22 ½”. To reduce weight, the waist belt has been redesigned to release only from the left side, and a webbing retainer has been added to secure the running end of the strap. The upper harness attachment points use the lighter ITW/Nexus Ladderloc and along with the webbing retainer. The shoulder straps have also been redesigned to accommodate their MCH Hydration Harness or a smaller and lighter modular carrier such as the ATS 50 Ounce Hydration Carrier. The cross strap portion of the harness has a very lightweight 4 channel and 4 row grid of PALS webbing with a clever design that does away with the base material that PALS is usually sewn to, instead using a double row of Murdock webbing bar tacked to itself and box-X stitched to the harness.

As with all ATS Tactical gear, it has a lifetime guarantee and is Made in the USA!

2012 Tommy V Challenge

Monday, September 24th, 2012

The Thomas J. Valentine Memorial Fund established in 2010, is a tribute to the memory of USN SOCS Tom Valentine who was a SEAL. Through CharitySmith The Thomas J. Valentine Memorial Fund is now an established non-profit memorial fund (EIN #87-0636433) and supports the Navy SEAL Foundation.

This year’s Tommy V Challenge will support some of the families that will be hitting the 10 year mark: Neil Roberts (3/4/2002) and Matt Bourgeois (3/28/2002). Unfortunately, many of the opportunities and benevolent groups that exist today to help families of fallen SEALs did not exist in 2002 and most of the current programs are not retroactive to these families. It is the intent of the Tommy V Challenge IV to provided financial support to these families. Additionally, since January of 2012 we have lost two more men, and the Tommy V Challenge will be supporting these families as well.

AS last year, the Tommy V Challenge will consist of SKEET & GOLF TOURNAMENTS and they will be held at the NAS Oceana & Aeropines Golf Course. The SKEET Tournament is Thursday, October 25, 2012 ($100 per person | $450 per team) and the GOLF Tournament is Friday, October 26, 2012 ($175 per person | $575 per team?).

I plan on returning from AUSA in time to participate and I hope to see some of you there as well. Visit tommyv.us to register and entry closes 15 October. Entry fee includes range fee, clays, shells, shirt, visor, food, after-party and a 2012 Tommy V Challenge Coin.
The Skeet Tournament is limited to 50 shooters.

Shellback Tactical Banshee LAPD Certification

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012

Due to the Los Angeles Police Department’s size it holds some serious sway in how other agencies around the Nation are trained and equipped. When word got out that it had been added to Official LAPD Approved gear list other departments wanted it as well. While the Banshee Rifle Plate Carrier isn’t ‘issued’ to LAPD officers, it is officially approved for individual purchase and this is how they do things.
