ACS – The Trigger Pouch

Thursday, December 10th, 2015

Cat_407338_2

I first checked out ACS’ Trigger Pouch at MiliPol while walking around with the guys from Knight’s Armamemnt. It is a PALS-mountable, quick-deployment device for grenades and distraction devices such as flashbangs, developed by two operatives from the Israeli elite counter terror unit YAMAM and manufactured by Advanced Combat Solutions. It secures the grenade or distraction device within its housing, where it can be quickly pulled away and deployed in one swift, fluid motion.

The Trigger Pouch is currently available for the M67 frag grenade and CTS/CTI & Safariland Flashbangs, with other grenades.  Trey Knight got a sample which he plans on using during his next grenade throw day at the range.

Blank Safe Live Round Interrupter

Thursday, December 10th, 2015

background m4 invert

The BlankSafe is a Live Round Interrupter intended to stop live rounds from fully chambering during training scenarios where blank rounds are in use. The BlankSafe LRI was developed by two US Navy SEALs who had personally witnessed multiple incidents where personnel under training conditions mistakenly loaded a live round during training. The LRI seats within the chamber of a rifle, allowing blank rounds to load and fire, however stopping live rounds from fully chambering.

live vs blank

The LRI causes a .27″ interrupt distance within the firing chain of an M4 rifle when a live round is loaded, preventing the weapon from firing.

Below is the White Paper for the BlankSafe LRI:

Magpul PMAG D-60 Comparison – Updated

Monday, December 7th, 2015

5

We recently purchased one of Magpul’s new PMAG D-60 magazines. The full details on the magazine can be read in a previous article, but as a reminder, the PMAG D-60 is a 60-round polymer drum magazine that is compatible with most STANAG 4179 weapon platforms, including the AR-15, M4/M16, SCAR Mk 16/16s, and HK416, among others.

To sate our curiosity, we pulled out a few other magazines of varying capacities to see how they compared in profile and size to the PMAG D-60. As a reference, Magpul lists the D-60 as being 4.1 in. at its widest, and 7.4 in. at its tallest.

11

First, we compared it to a standard PMAG GEN M3 magazine. Obviously, the drum component is quite a bit thicker than a standard 30-round capacity mag, however as expected the height of the two magazines was roughly equal, with the M3 coming in at about 7.25 in.

10

The width of the GEN M3 magazine is roughly .75 in.

6

Next, we took one of the PMAG 40 GEN M3 mags and sized it up against the D-60. The extra 10 round capacity brings it to a total length of about 9.5 in.

9

It shares the width of the standard GEN M3 magazine, which is roughly .75 in.

8

Our third pick was the SureFire High Capacity Magazine, 60-round, one of the most obvious magazines to compare against the D-60 do to their shared capacity. The SureFire magazine utilizes a coffin design, which adds noticeable increase in length and width over a standard AR-15 magazine.

7

The SureFire High Capacity Magazine, 60-round measures at a length of 8.7 in., and a width of about 1.375 in. This makes it noticeably lengthier than the D-60, even if it’s still comparatively thinner.

It’s undeniable that the PMAG D-60 is quite a bit thicker at the base than even the SureFire magazine, however that seems to be a decent compromise for remaining about as lengthy as a standard 30-round magazine. We’re eager to see what aftermarket magazine pouches and other accessories come out for the D-60 in the coming months.

Update: Due to a request from the readership, we went ahead and recorded the weights of the magazines loaded and unloaded. We used American Eagle 55 gr. FMJ cartridges to load each magazine.

Average Guy Solutions – Legionnaire And Hoplite Improved Front Sight Posts

Friday, December 4th, 2015

AGS 1

Average Guy Solutions is a firearms components manufacturer founded by a former employee of BMI Defense Systems. Their first product line consists of two Improved Front Sight Posts for AR-15 rifles, the Legionnaire and Hoplite. These posts are machined from 416 stainless steel and finished with a Melonite process, providing a durable, non-reflective, corrosion-resistant finish. These posts are designed to offer an increased speed of sight acquisition, increased precision, and increased durability over the stock AR-15 front sight post.

AGS 2

The Legionnaire was the first configuration developed, providing a full pyramid sight for faster target acqusistion. It features a scoring line around the circumference to aid in setting mechanical zero. Its unique shape makes it incompatible with most available front sight tools, however users can still install and adjust the Legionnaire with the use of a 5.56 round.

AGS 3

The Hoplite is designed to offer the same precision as the Legionnaire, however it features a base that will interface with many current sight adjustment tools.
