SSD After Dark – Major Fox Keeps Your Riser Up

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Well it’s dark somewhere. Ever had trouble keep it up? Your stock’s cheek riser, that is. Recently, we published an article about Victor Company’s Accu-Stack Comb Risers. While we think we did a pretty good job of explaining what they do, Victor Company produced this commercial to show the benefits of their Accu-Stack Comb Risers and it will probably be the best thing you see, all day (or night). Despite our tagline it is safe for work.

Mad Duo – Shotgun Scabbard and Shot Shell Chest Rig from BCS Tactical

Friday, March 11th, 2011

We got some goodies in the mail a couple day ago, or rather several members of our evaluation team did, courtesy of BCS Tactical Systems. BCS has a number of proprietary designs and a solid reputation for rugged manufacture, but one of their most significant manufacturing capabilities is their ability (and willingness) to build custom fit body armor carriers for guys On The Job. Any LEO or similar armed professional can contact them with an accurate outline/measurement of their body armor and get one custom made in short order, in virtually any of the different “Gucciflage” patterns out there, in 500D or 1000D.

In any case, BCS sent out some of their Shotgun Chest Rigs and Shotgun Scabbards, and we’ve been taking them out to play—not enough yet to give you a good rundown of what we think, but we’ll have a full review in a month or so. The chest rig is a niche piece of gear to be sure, but we like it so far. Not everyone is going to need it, and it’s certainly not something that will mount easily to an existing plate carrier or set of load bearing gear, but it’s not supposed to be. It’s made for specific situations—say, if a patrolman or tac team member has to deploy into a big damn office complex or college building, when having thirty extra rounds of super socks, rubber shot, shock-locks or whatever might come in very handy.

The scabbard is similarly niche-oriented, though we suspect it’ll see more widespread use than the other (which isn’t a reflection on the rig’s validity; there’s not a lot of call for multiple rams or 37mm launchers either, but both come in handy). The scabbard is intended to securely carry and support a tactical shotgun with a barrel as short as 14”. It will carry both the shotgun and an entry/pry tool in a backpack type configuration; again, potentially useful in a deployment where an officer on the M4 or a sub-gun as primary needs to bring another twelve-gauge along.

We’re going to play with them (a lot) and we’ll let you know what you find out. All are made by BCS Tactical of Cordura material (we don’t have all the design specs, we’re waiting to hear back from them with those) but they seem to be sturdily built for now. Magpul Now Shipping MBUS II

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Magpul has updated their low cost Magpul Back Up Sights. Designed to fit a MilStd 1913 (Picatinny) rail, the MBUS II comes as two separate components; a rear and a front sight. Both fold down out of the way and flip up into place. The new versions are both slightly more streamlined than the earlier sights and they have improved the locking mechanism for the front sight post. For the rear sight they have developed the new N.A.W.S. (No Aperture Window Sight) option. It works when you fold down both apertures and frame the target within the protective wings for snap-shots in Close Quarters Battle situations.

My BHI-15 came with the previous version and it is a good choice but I am glad to see they have worked on the front sight post. Just make sure that you actually take your rifle out and zero the MBUS. It is an M16-style sight and has to be zeroed. Also, make sure you practice with it. While it will most likely be your emergency sighting system, it won’t do any good if you can’t use it.

Magpul has also been so kind as to provide a couple of notes on use: “Cannot be mounted to a railed gas block due to excess heat issues. Front MBUS must be mounted to a railed fore end on the same plane as the receiver rail. Because of this the sight is not compatible with the MOE Hand Guard.

Magpul Releases 5 & 10 Round Limiters

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Magpul is now shipping 5 and 10 round limiters for the PMAG 20. Used to restrict the number of rounds a magazine will accept, limiters are particularly handy for locales that do not permit 20 round magazines while hunting. It is important to note that the limiter does not permanently alter the magazine so this is not a shortcut around laws restricting magazine ownership based on capacity.

10-8 Releases Aluminum Basepads for 1911 Mags

Monday, February 28th, 2011

10-8 Performance unveiled the new machined aluminum base pad for the 1911 at SHOT. The prototype pads shown above are bare aluminum, but the production units will be anodized black. The pads have the now classic 10-8 base pad features – scooped in the front for stripping a stuck mag, and 8 dimples on the bottom for numbering. You will also notice from the photos that the pad has a unique angled profile. This is derived from a concept developed by Chip McCormick and a member of 10-8 Performance, and gives you the best attributes of both low profile and extended base pads in one design. The pad is thin and low profile in the back where you don’t need the material, but is extended up front to provide a positive index in the hand during loading and manipulation. The pad allows you to fully seat the magazine with an extended magazine well, while providing a slim profile for carry. The front of the pad sticks out just enough to allow you to easily pull on it either for ensuring the mag is seated or for malfunction clearance. The pad is designed for the Chip McCormick Power Mag 8, but will also fit the Wilson 47D magazine. Based on info from 10-8 Performance, these should be available VERY soon.
