NBOW Range Day – Sig Sauer

Sig Sauer recently introduced the M400 which features a gas impingement system carbine. Based on market needs for a reliable, less expensive alternative to the 516’s piston operating system. Both the 516 and M400 feature Sig Sauer’s ambidextrous lower receiver.

Here you can see the 516 paired with the Elite suppressor. They have measured less than 100 db with this can. An interesting feature of the 516, is that you can dial the gas down to the point that it can be fired without cycling the bolt, further reducing the audible signature by 2-3 db. Of course, the biggest downside to suppressed 5.56 is the lack of subsonic ammo.

NBOW Range Day – H&K

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

I am attending the New Breed of Warrior range day at US Training Center in Moyock, NC.

H&K demo’d several weapons including the USMC’s new M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. Here you can see the weapon with most of the issue accessories. The backup sights will be swapped out for the KAC micro sight and the Marines have asked for a slight modification to the butt stock. The latch for removal of the pad will be changed in order to make it more difficult to remove. This way it won’t accidentally be removed.

Additionally, H&K unveiled their new HK169 Grenade Launcher. Designed to replace the HK69 stand alone GL, it takes the US Army issue M320 and strips the sights off the top in favor of a rail. Additionally, it integrates the side folding stock from the G36. These changes save about 1.5 lbs. When the stock is removed almost another pound can be shaved from the weight.

I fired two TPT rounds from the HK169 which is one of only three examples here in the US. It was fitted with rudimentary leaf sights so there was a little bit of Kentucky windage but I was on target by the second round.

Rapid Rod – Collapsible Cleaning Rod

Monday, September 5th, 2011

During Viet Nam, many troops carried several sections of the old M16 cleaning rod taped to their hand guards in case they needed to rapidly clear a spent case from the barrel. Today, many troops are issued with snake-style cleaning kits which are effective but can’t be used to clear a barrel. On the other hand, 16″ of rod taped to your carbine can get hung up at the worst possible moment. However, there’s an interesting alternative available. Atsko makes Rapid Rod, a collapsible cleaning rod that works like a tent pole. The sections are connected by a shock cord so that it can be folded up for storage but rapidly brought into action when needed. No more worry about losing rod sections or taking the time to screw them together.

M4 Training Weapon

Monday, September 5th, 2011

FInding a quality inert training rifle can be difficult. Combat Training Aids, LLC builds some quality stuff that not only replicates weight and size, but to a certain degree, function as well. They over mold a full length steel barrel with a real flash suppressor on the end so you can attach a sound suppressor. The dummy weapon also includes aluminum NATO STANAG 4694 Accessory Rails that are fully backward compatible with MIL STD 1913 rails, grabbers, and mounts. The M4-STANAG comes standard with a 5 position collapsible stock but can be manufactured with any available 1.185 in Mil Spec stock of your choice. They are available in a variety of colors.

Soldier Equipment & Technology – Lucid LLC

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

First time exhibitor Lucid LLC offered their HD7 Red Dot Sight paired with the industry’s first 2x -5x variable accessory magnifier.

There are two versions of the HD7 RDS available. The commercial model with a zero POI shift between four operator selectable reticles and a military version with a single reticle and capped turrets. Both versions are powered by a single, readily available AAA battery providing 5000 hours of service. The red dot has multiple brightness settings and features an auto brightness sensor and auto shutoff after two hours. It comes with an integral 1913 mount that features thumbscrews. It has been tested for the past three years with numerous civilian and LE shooters. In fact, I have fired a carbine equipped with the HD7 and it was simple to use and maintained zero.

When coupled with a swing out ADM mount, the magnifier can quickly be placed in and out of action based on conditions.
