Malaysia Eyes Bigger Market for M4 Carbine

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

According to a report by Malaysian news agency Bernama, Malaysia has put forth a proposal to cooperatively produce and market the M4 carbine to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The M4 is manufactured in Malaysia under a license granted from Colt Defense LLC in 2006-7 by SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd. 14,000 M4s are currently in service with the Malaysian Armed Forces, Special Forces of Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency as well as the Royal Malaysian Police.

SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd (SME) is a National Aerospace & Defence Industries (NADI) subsidiary company. They have been issued a mandate to cooperate with ASEAN countries to produce the Colt M4 carbine assault rifle for a wider user base. SME signed a new contract with Colt in February to facilitate the production of an additional 116,000 carbines over seven years. This must still be approved by the US Congress. In particular, Brunei was singled out as a possible customer for the US issue service weapon.

The initiative to develop the region’s defense industry, referred to as the ASEAN Defence Industries Collaboration (ADIC) was set forth at the recent ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting (ADMM) in Jakarta. One of the most compelling points of the plan to federate the production of the rifles across partner countries is that 85% of the parts will be locally produced. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi explained “Only the main technology and equipment come from United States. Colt also gave us the right to sell M4 to ASEAN countries. “Asean partners will be given the opportunity to share production. Although M4 will be made in Malaysia, its components will be produced by ASEAN countries.”

New Reticle Options for the Meprolight M21 Combat Sight

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Meprolight’s M21 reflex sight is imported from Israel by The Mako Group. It is a self-illuminated reflex sight powered by tritium and a fiber optic collector system. While it is the standard issue combat sight for the Israeli Defense Forces, they feel it is also a great option for Law Enforcement duties. One of the biggest advantages of the M21 is that it requires no batteries and has no switches to break. This means that it can be mounted to a rifle and there is no chance of encountering a dead battery when you need it most.

In addition to the cost savings associated with batteries, there is another advantage. Mako has worked with Mepro to introduce new reticle options. The standard reticle for the US market has been the bullseye reticle, but they have now added the Triangle reticle, Open X reticle, and both 4.3 MOA and 5.5 MOA Dot reticles.

“The non-electronic Mepro M21 sight with bullseye reticle has proven immensely popular with law enforcement agencies who need a rugged sight that can withstand rough rides and extreme temperatures in the trunk of a patrol car, and is always ready for instant use without worry about dead or leaking batteries,” Addy Sandler, CEO of The Mako Group explained. “Now these agencies have the option of choosing the precise triangle and dot reticles to fit any intended use.”

Panteao Productions to Sponsor Miami Vice Themed Side Match at the Carolina Cup

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Join the Panteao Gun Team June 16-18 in Oxford, NC at the IDPA Carolina Cup as they pay homage to a television show enjoyed by many shooters…Miami Vice. Panteao Productions, along with Colt and Winchester, are hosting a side match called Calderone’s Return – The Hit List. In this scenario, you are the Argentinean hit man from the fourth episode of season one of Miami Vice called “Calderone’s Return”. In this famous scene, the hit man (played by Jim Zubiena) takes out a drug dealer inside of a limo with a shotgun; then faces a bodyguard he didn’t count on. From the surrender position, he quickly dispatched the drug dealer’s bodyguard with a Mozambique drill, then calmly drops the magazine out of his 1911, empties the chamber, and places the gun on top of the bodyguard as he walks away. Classic scene!

Think you’ve got what it takes to take your shot at being the Hit Man? You’ll be facing a target 10 yards away and you’ll have to drill it with two rounds to the body and one to the head using a Colt 1911.

While at the Carolina Cup if you happen to spot a match participant that looks a lot like Detective Stan Switek from Miami Vice, it’s because it is Switek. Actor and IDPA and NRA member Michael Talbott will be shooting the match with the Panteao Gun Team on Friday and Saturday.

The Panteao Productions filming crew will be filming portions of the clinic for the upcoming documentary on the Carolina Cup. More information about the Carolina Cup can be found here: www.the-carolinacup.com

Adcor Defense to Offer BEAR as Improved Carbine Contender

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Adcor Defense has announced that they plan to offer their piston driven Brown Enhanced Automatic Rifle (BEAR) as a candidate for the upcoming US Army Improved Carbine solicitation anticipated to be released late this month. Unlike other Stoner-style piston rifles, the BEAR’s piston is permanently attached to the bolt carrier.

“The Adcor Defense BEAR combines a new piston system with an exclusive ejection port dust wiper with cover, an ambidextrous forward-placed charging handle/forward-placed assist, and a new key-locked, highly rigid rail system,” said Jimmy Stavrakis, president of Adcor Defense Inc. “More importantly, this innovative design will increase reliability and eliminate the soldier’s most common cause of weapon failure — jamming due to operation in harsh, dirty environments.”

The fixed piston isn’t the only innovation found on the BEAR’s bolt carrier. In order to mitigate stoppages caused by dust and other debris entering the chamber, Adcor has developed a patented spring-loaded dust cover mounted on the bolt carrier. Each time the weapon fires and the weapon goes into battery, the dust cover moves into the ejection port opening, flush with the outside geometry of the carbine.

Interestingly, the BEAR also integrates an ambidextrous (user configurable) forward charging handle into the rail system. And imagine this, it’s non-reciprocating. Additionally, the barrel is free floated.

SureFire Rail Adapter for 1911

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Although SureFire’s MR07 Adapter Mount has been around for some time, the M1911’s Centennial has brought a renewed interest in the firearm as well as several new models introduced that retain the original design characteristics. With these models, in order to utilize a weapon light, you need a rail adapter and the MR07 fits the bill

One of the big advantages to the MR07 is that it does not require any permanent changes to the pistol and it can be restored to its original condition at any time. The mount is made from 7000 series aluminum and is low profile enough to fit most GI-style holsters.

The MR07 attaches via a modified slide stop and pin assembly machined from pre-hardened chrome-molybdenum steel. The pin fit is match-grade. The trigger guard locking wedge is energy absorbent polyurethane, avoiding metal-to-metal contact, and can be tightened with a cartridge rim meaning no hex wrench is necessary. Additionally, a spacer shim is provided to accommodate manufacturing variations in the trigger guard thickness. Finally, it features an anti-chafing pad to prevent scoring of the dust cover.
