Military Wraps May Mask More Than Just Color – Updated

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Even though the Army issued guidance last year on how to paint rifles in order to better blend in to the environment, it seems that the practice just isn’t that wide spread. One reason may be that it is so difficult to restore the weapons to inspection order. Another issue is that the guidance was only issued for rifles and carbines and not for the myriad of other weapons that find themselves on the battlefield. UPDATE: In fact, we have recently heard that there are no plans to authorize painting of additional weapons.

For the past two years, Military Wraps has produced MW Gripz. They are die-cut applique kits that can be applied at the operator level to various individual weapons. The material is also available in sheets that can be cut to shape as needed. Additionally, the non-marring material leaves no residue when removed. As you can see from the photo below, they do a great job of breaking up the visual signature of small arms.

But there’s more. During a recent demonstration, it was noted that weapons covered on MW Gripz didn’t emit a significant thermal signature. In fact, it appeared to be about half that of unprepared weapons. Based on this, Military Wraps has secured lab time in order to determine exactly how much Grips mask the weapon’s IR signature. We look forward to their report and will pass on what we find out. In the interim, MW Grips can be applied and removed repeatedly with no damage to the weapon not additional cleaning requirement. It is important to note that the current versions of Gripz is designed for use with weapons that are employed in the semi automatic role, a new version is on the way that can take the increased heat of sustained automatic fire.

Updated: Military Wraps shared these photos with us of a few weapons wrapped in the Gripz technology. As you can see, the MultiCam (oops, OCP) makes a big difference. Additionally, an evaluation by a military unit came in over the weekend from Afghanistan stated that while a single kit is designed cover two carbines it could also easily be adapted for use with other weapons. Additionally, the break up of the weapon’s outline was significant in both daylight conditions as well as under night vision devices.

MW Gripz are available in a variety of patterns and can be manufactured using to match the operational environment. For more information visit www.militarywraps.com.

Shaddox Tactical’s Shielded Shell Carrier

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Last summer we introduced you to the Shaddox Tactical .50 BMG Shell Carrier.

Since then, Shaddox Tactical has taken feedback from users in the field and added a top flap so rounds are not as exposed. Additionally, they have added a clear vinyl window on the inside of the flap for range cards or target data sheets. Just like the original, it is still designed to fit inside a cargo pocket or can be carried several to a SAW or similar sized utility pouch. The Shielded Shell Carrier is also available in a twenty round version for more standard rifle calibers such as .308 all the way up to .338 LM.

S&S Precision’s M320 Accessories

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

As the M320 becomes more and more common in the Army, troops are beginning to realize how versatile it is and what an improvement over the M203 it offers. For example, it is easily attached and detached from the M4 and M16 for use as a stand alone Grenade Launcher. As issued, when it is used in this stand-alone configuration, the shoulder stock is awkward and there is not a versatile direct-over-bore mounting solution for aiming devices. But, for those who want more from their M320, S&S Precision has developed a Buttstock and GL Sight Mount, that when attached to the M320, greatly increase its versatility.

Sure, there’s a stock available from H&K and the buttpad is huge. The S&S Precision option is manufactured from 7075 Aluminum, with a small rubber composite pad and attachment point for retention systems. Additionally, it features three stops and is easily removed from the weapon like an M4 stock.

The GL Sight Mount consists of a Mount Base as well as two configurable bases; a Low Profile Rail and a Stepped Rail. As you can see, it is designed to mount directly above the bore rather than offset to the side and can be configured with either rail to accommodate your aiming solution. The mount is raised in order to facilitate a good cheek weld. This also means that you can fully collapse the stock below the mount.

Additionally, S&S Precision builds the M320 holster, designed specifically to carry the weapon in its stand alone configuration. Made from Kydex, it is a rigid holster and features a bungee back up retention as well as a barrel plug to keep it debris free.

A-TACS SHOT Show 2011 Roundup

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Digital Concealment Systems released a great roundup of all things A-TACS from SHOT Show 2011. Rather than steal their thunder, we thought it best to show you a couple of our favorites and then send you on over to check out the entire list.

We’ve mentioned the upcoming TAC-U combat shirt from Propper. It’s unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Tactical Assault Gear unveiled their Combat Sustainment Pack at SHOT Show. We figured the web would have blown up already over this one but it looks like it is starting to receive some attention. Designed to be used to augment a chest rig load or as a bailout bag, one of this pack’s coolest features is that it includes a CCB (combat casualty bag) used to carry a down man’s kit while he is being moved, treated and extracted. Our friends at TAG have sent one along to us so be on the lookout for a review soon.

Make sure you read the whole thing so you can dig into the details at A-TACS.com.

The Army’s Weapons Signature Management Efforts

Monday, February 14th, 2011

KitUp! and their parent, Military.com ran a good report last week on the Army’s fielding of enhanced flash hiders as the first step of a weapons signature management strategy. We only have a couple of things to add to their story. As we understand it, the Army also purchased flash hiders from BE Meyers as well as AAC and SureFire. Additionally, the current M16 Birdcage-style flash hider dates back to the M16A1. The M16 originally had a 3-prong flash hider that was more effective but was prone to breakage. The design was altered in order to close the pointy end of the thing so that it would not get caught in vines. Reportedly, troops also used the flash hider as a lever to open C-ration crates until it was changed. It will interesting to see how these new flash hiders fair under field conditions although some of these early concerns have been taken into account.

Finally a quick plug for KitUp! If you are not checking it regularly, you should be. KitUp! along with Military Morons are two sites that we feel are complimentary to Soldier Systems Daily.

Updated – Sabre Defence Owner Indicted

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Well, this might have something to do with Sabre Defence being up for sale by their creditors. According to KNOX News, Sabre’s Owner, Guy Savage (this has got to be a pseudonym) was indicted by a Federal grand jury along with five four employees on Tuesday.

It turns out that the ATF raid last year was looking for employee criminal activity. The irony is that at the time Savage released a statement explaining that the ATF raid was looking for unauthorized transfers of weapons by employees. Turns out he was right, except that he and five four of his lieutenants were the employees the ATF was looking for. Specifically, the 21-count indictment alleges they conspired to illegally import and export firearms and components to and from the United States in violation of the Arms Export Control Act.

10-8 Performance’s Glock Sight In Tool

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

From 10-8 Performance comes the Glock Sight In Tool (SIT). It is a single use nylon sight blade that can be installed on all models of Glock pistols, temporarily replacing the front sight blade for sight in purposes. You simply install the tool, shoot a test target, and file/sand the overheight blade down to increase the elevation of the group. Once you have filed the blade to the height that gives you the desired point of impact, remove it and measure its height. You can then determine the proper height front sight to purchase for your particular pistol. Each kit sold will include ONE of the sight blades and ONE set screw. Sandpaper is also included for convenience. As an side, they’ve kicked around the idea of putting together agency/unit packs with multiples of each piece. if this is something you’d like to see let them know.
