SIG SAUER - Never Settle

Donate Your Used Boots to the ANA Commandos

December 29th, 2014

Although the war is over for the majority of Americans, it wages on for the Afghan National Army and their advisors.

Advisors we know have been telling us about the state of the Commandos’ footwear.

There was this one mission where we were going in at night to clear some checkpoints that the Taliban had raided. We were stacked tightly with our Afghan partners in a helicopter, late at night. It was probably only about 25 degrees or so. You could just barely make out the white capped mountain peaks as we skipped through the valleys. Snow and ice patches littered the LZ. I looked down to make sure that the laces on my cold weather boots were still tight, and that’s when I noticed that the two dudes in front of me had on plastic shoes and the guy next to him had taped the soles of his boots to his uppers. There were several other Afghan Soldiers with similar footwear. It didn’t matter how cold I got on that mission because I knew that those dudes were colder and probably tougher. Period.

The ANA Commandos are generally well equipped but their boots aren’t built to our standards and many of them are wearing footwear that is taped back together as well as running shoes, flip flops and even plastic shoes purchased at the market. This is making it difficult for them to make movements over rough terrain.

It’s tough to kick doors when you’re wearing flip flops. They need gently worn desert and mountain boots in sizes 7-10 to help get these guys back in the fight.

Tactical Tailor has agreed to accept the boots and transship them to their recipients in the ANA.

Maker Monday – S&S Precision SMR Dust-E

December 29th, 2014

Dust-E

Back when we first mentioned the SSP SMR, one of the main criticisms was that the business end of the magazine was exposed. But even then, S&S Precision had already planned a part that would protect the magazine from debris. That part is the SMR Dust-E which snaps into place at the bottom of the Skeletonized Magazine Retention (SMR). The 2-part installation process takes seconds. In addition to serving as a dust cover, the Dust-E offers additional magazine retention. While it is quite a tight fit at first, it will loosen up with a little bit of use.

Leitner Wise Redesigns The Dust Cover

December 28th, 2014

While many will debate the need for a dust cover, I find it a necessity for a fighting rifle. Over the years I’ve asked several friends in the AR business why no one has done anything with the dust cover. The answer has basically been that it’s a commodity part and there’s no upside to changing it. Although rare, I’ve seen a few ideas come out over the years and this time, Leitner Wise has taken a stab at it.

IMG_0693.JPG

Manufactured from a single billet of aluminum, this dust cover is machined with inset edges so that it will fully seal the ejection port.

I won’t steal anymore of their thunder. Head on over the Leitner Wise to find out the rest of the story.

Here’s One to Ponder – The Broomhandle Mauser

December 27th, 2014

This is a prototype C96 Broomhandle Mauser pistol.

This is a Astra 900 Broomhandle along with its holster.

Turns out, that cool wooden holster can be attached for use as a stock.

IMG_0688.JPG

So, it would seem that this would make it an NFA item if you attached the stock to the pistol, no? Actually, the answer is “no, it isn’t.” Due to the age and value of these guns, they are exempted by the ATF.
