Hurricane Irene Signing Off

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

As I’m sure you’ve surmised by now, we survived. Lots of wind, lots of rain, but were inland far enough to avoid the tidal surge. Lost a few limbs, but it ended up being more of a pruning than anything else. Spent the morning cleaning up the debris. The power only flickered but lots in the area lost theirs. Hopefully everyone is up and running again soon.

Rest in Peace those who lost their lives in the storm. We mourn your loss.

Hurricane Irene Update

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

We are 12 hours into the wind and rain. We’ve had a couple of tornado warnings throughout the night and morning but nothing close. Peak wind gusts at 51 mph here in town. Our retention pond is already at the same level as it was during the Nor’Easter of 2009 so this is some serious rainfall. Overall, not horrible. The Postal Service even made deliveries this morning. The good news in all of this? The fire in the Great Dismal Swamp that has been plaguing our air quality over the past several weeks should finally be out. At this point we still have power and internet but phone service is abysmal. So far so good.

Disaster Recovery Supplies and Equipment ADS Tactical

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

We were busy prepping the home office for Hurricane Irene and I remembered that ADS had a Disaster Response catalog. Based lessons learned from the Haiti and Japanese earthquake relief, ADS Inc has prepared a catalog to help planners and logistics personnel identify equipment and supplies for this latest crisis. Regardless if you source your equipment from ADS or elsewhere, it is an excellent reference tool.

Hurricane Irene

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The SSD home office sits right in the path of Hurricane Irene. While we aren’t worried about our safety, we do doubt that we will maintain power and comms through this event. In over three years we have only missed one day of publication and we don’t plan on starting now, but please understand if we miss a few articles over the next few days.

To everyone else in the path of destruction; Stay Safe!

Putting Some Humor in a Hurricane Evac

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

With Hurricane Irene coming at the East Coast like a dreadnaught, it’s nice to run across something humorous to help put it all into perspective.

Kitty Hawk Kites offers this OBX Hurricane Evacuation Plan T-shirt. Available in Blue, White or Gray in sizes Small – XLarge, it features a VERY simplified evac plan.
