SOFIC 2014 – Six15 JTAC Kit

Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

Six15 Technologies has developed a kit for use by JTACs consisting of their new Tactical Battlefield Computer and Odin see through display. The kit creates augmented reality by feeding data through the computer to the Odin to provide the user with actionable intelligence. I had a chance to try it on for a demonstration and it was cool to see the icons in the HUD that popped into view with additional info when I looked in their direction .

The Tactical Battlefield Computer is based around an Intel Core i5-425OU CPU and runs Windows 7 professional 64 bit. Comes with 8GB RAM, 480GB SSD, 6 external USB connectors, and a uSD card slot. An external display connector supports HDMI or USB. IP65 rated.

Odin is a see through display technology that enables augmented reality. It allows the user to view revelant computer generated information such as graphics, maps, and alerts overlayed over the real world. The Odin’s display is 800 x 600 pixels (full color, RBG) with a 45 degree diagonal field of view with a usable image available in less than 3 seconds. Capable of operating in temperatures between -31C to 49C, IP68 rated.

SIG showed me a couple of variants of their MCX range of carbines. Offered in 5.56, .300 and 7.62×39, the MCX is moving into production.

The Low Viz Assault Weapon above features a 6.75″ barrel in .300. Notice the folding stock which offers a very slim profile when folded.

This shot gives you a view of the right side of the weapon. The short suppressor shown offers above 5 db more than an MP5SD but in .300 at the same overall package size of the MP5SD. It also features a adjustable gas system but the subsonic ammo setting can run supersonic ammo but it will affect service life of the weapon.

Additionally, SIG offers an adapter plate for Standard AR lowers that integrates a Picatinny Rail that allows the user to swap out folding and collapsible stocks.

Operator Challenge

The 2014 Operator Challenge is an invitational 5-stage physical and shooting event limited to 100 Operators from the USA and the 117 nations that have been invited to attend USSOCOM’s 2014 International SOF Week. Competitors will compete in events including an obstacle course and steel challenge range, tested through a mixture of shooting barricades, movement with kit, and a simulated wounded Operator. Competitors will utilize carbines, pistols, ammunition, and individual tactical equipment provided by the Operator Challenge Committee. The competitors will be competing for awards and high end prizes.

A parallel ‘SHOOTING WITH SOF’ event will allow select non-DoD and civilian teams to compete for prizes as well as shoot weapon systems utilized by SOF Operators.

The 2014 Operator Challenge is being held on May 18th, 2014, the weekend prior to SOFIC and the USSOCOM Global SOF Conference. The competition is being hosted at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s range complex, a 220 acre shooting facility with state-of-the-art ranges, utilized by local, state, and national law enforcement ranges as well as units from the U.S. Special Operations Command.

The awards ceremony and Operator social will be held on May 20th, 2014 in downtown Tampa. The event will include entertainment, a silent auction, and a raffle prior to the awards ceremony. This event benefits the Global SOF Foundation and the Green Beret Foundation.
