Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Saturday, March 16th, 2013

‘When you get the chance learn how to operate different small arms; everyone in a serious line of work should know how to run common weapons like the AK, FAL, G3, and M14. In addition understand how to handle pistols like the TT 33, P38, CZ 75, Makarov, and others. Just simply knowing how to unload and clear these weapons or even disable them is a skill set that may come in handy in some remote corner of the world, or even the USA.’

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

“My Gunfighter moment this week is real simple; support the NRA. I simply can’t say that enough – upgrade your membership, rejoin, recruit a new member, do something to get involved.

The NRA isn’t perfect but I can tell you from personal experience the only thing that gives the 2nd Amendment any meaning at all is the 4 million members of the National Rifle Association. I have traveled the globe in my firearms career and been exposed to the gun cultures of other countries; they all to a man wish they had something as powerful as the NRA. Every single time I hear the same comment.

Right now more than ever we need everyone who enjoys the firearms freedoms we have engaged in the fight. The anti gunners are using the Sandy Hook tragedy as the golden opportunity they have been waiting for to go all in on killing the 2nd Amendment . Remember they don’t want you to be able to own firearms – period! There is no compromising with extremists as they are not rational – therefore we have to fight them tooth and nail to preserve our freedoms. And that fight is now !!

Stay vigilant – stay engaged – stay in the fight !! And support the NRA !!”

Ammunition for Students of 2013 Vickers Tactical Classes

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Larry Vickers posted this on his Facebook page. His classes have never been high round count affairs to begin with. LAV has always been about accuracy and willing to work with his students to ensure that they walk away trained. It’s great to see that he’s worked out ammunition sources of supply for his classes.

Based on the firearm and ammunition hysteria in the market in early 2013 I would like to put out some guidelines for students of my classes as well as information on sourcing ammo. Here goes;

1) Plan ahead; 400 rds per day is a good rule of thumb for my training classes – that number covers virtually all my curriculum. Your best bet is to shop around far in advance to purchase the ammo you need vs waiting until the last minute. In addition quality reloads are permitted in my classes ( see number 4 below )

2) Many of my drills can be structured for a reduced round count. For instance if you can only get 600 rds instead of 800 rds for a 2 day class we can make that work – remember any training is better than no training. I can adjust the drills to meet your ammo supply. My classes have always been quality vs. quantity with a heavy emphasis on accuracy so training won’t suffer with a slightly reduced round count

3) 22 LR is authorized for classes. I have had students bring rimfire for different reasons before and I would encourage you to come with a 22 caliber long gun or handgun before you skip the class altogether. Understand that rimfire firearms are not as functionally reliable as centerfire weapons so if possible do your homework to see what kind of ammo your rimfire likes best

4) Factory new ammo is available from G&R Tactical www.gandrtactical.com and remanufactured ammo is available for a slightly discounted price from Everglades ammunition in Florida. Currently 9mm, .40 and .45 ammo is readily available for Vickers Tactical students with 5.56mm ammo coming on line from Everglades in the May 2013 timeframe ( approx). To order ammo from Everglades contact Stephen Bender at Steve@evergladesammo.com and tell him you are ordering ammo for one of my classes. The discount applies to the ammo needed for the class you are attending; any ammo you buy beyond that will be the normal price

If you have any questions contact me at Larry@VickersTactical.com

Thanks and I’ll see you at the range!

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

“How accurate should my weapon be?” is a question I get on a regular basis. Of course, the answer depends on the weapon and the application. For both pistol and a carbine it should be accurate enough to make a headshot at the furthest distance that you can realistically hope to make in the real world. In my opinion that is 25 yds for a pistol and 100 yds for a carbine .

Since my rule of thumb is shooters can only hope to be able to shoot to within 50% of the inherent accuracy of the weapon under conditions of stress then that means both the pistol and carbine need to be capable of 2.5 inch groups. This equates to the ability to hit a 5 inch circle, or the head of a small framed adult hostile at those distances.”

‘One of my favorite handgun skill drills is called the Test. Also known as the 10-10-10 drill; it goes like this – put a B8 replacement center bullseye at 10 yards and in a max of 10 seconds shoot 10 shots from the low ready position. The goal is to put them all in the black within the maximum time limit – once you become proficient try using the scoring rings and try to score a minimum of 90 with 95 and above being ideal. As my students can tell you this drill is no joke and serves as an excellent yardstick to measure handgun skill by; you can find out where a student is at skill-wise real fast with this quick drill. I got it from Ken Hackathorn years ago and it is a classic.’

LAV’s fixin’ to run the latest DDM4v1 through a torture test. LAV related that lessons learned from last year’s torture test helped drive development of the new DDM4 rail introduced earlier this year. This carbine also incorporates DD’s new CNC machined front sight post and flash suppressor.
