TAG Purchased by LC Industries

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

There is some pretty exciting news coming out of Tactical Assault Gear that they have kept under pretty tight wraps. They have been purchased by LC Industries. Additionally, Chris Osman, former owner of TAG has taken a position as Vice President of Sales for all of LCI.

LC Industries is the largest and oldest of the employers of the blind in the United States having been established in 1937. No stranger to manufacturing, LCI already operates eight other factories responsible for over 800 products including 5 gallon water and fuel cans, mattresses, chem lights, and virtually any office consumable found in your field desk.

This is a huge opportunity for the consumer as well as the Government as LCI is a non-profit entity. Their goal is not to profit but rather to employ the blind. There are many employers of non-traditional workforces in America but generally they are cut and sew outfits that build to Government spec. With the acquisition of TAG, LCI will not only be able to produce products but design them as well. Additionally, they will continue to offer the large catalog of equipment already in production. LCI operates the base service stores on 32 Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps installations where they have already begun to incorporate the TAG brand.

Big changes are also in store for TAG. Not only will they be expanding, that expansion will be to accommodate their new employees as they transition to the largest employer of the blind in California. Custom machinery is being produced to allow blind employees to integrate directly on the production floor. Combined with an aggressive quality assurance program, the user will never know who on the line produced an individual product.

For the consumer, quality will remain the same but prices have already have dropped due the non-profit nature of LC Industries. The goal of LC Industries is to ship all orders within 48 hours utilizing their two regional distribution centers located in Las Vegas and Raleigh. TAG will concentrate on productions and LCI on order processing and shipping.

TAG is in booth #25411 at SHOT Show.

Hyperstealth, Is There Something in the Water?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Truthfully, I wasn’t even sure what title to give this article. I could do the journalist thing and give it a sensationalized headline, or I could call it like I see it. I chose the hybrid approach.

Hyper Stealth recently posted a new page on their website with the assertion that the Crye developed Multi Terrain Pattern is “far from original”. What makes absolutely no sense is the lack of evidence that this is the case.

The article claims that: “In 2003-2004 Guy Cramer, President/CEO of HyperStealth, worked with the Infantry Trials Development Unit (ITDU) (U.K. Ministry of Defence) on new camouflage patterns before being told that the ITDU was unable to continue working with him as he was not a British Citizen.”

Ok, got it. Six years ago they did some work for the MoD but have no connection to the recent British camo development effort. Maybe the bone of contention here is that Crye Precision is also a non-British firm yet was allowed to work on British camo. For the record, Caleb Crye is not Canadian, but rather born in the USA.

At any rate, the article goes on to showcase almost 50 patterns or variants of various camo patterns “which bear a close resemblance to the new British Pattern.” We see some patterns which use similar colors and others which don’t. Furthermore, they fail to show any of the distinct shapes used in MTP. Ergo, I see no evidence that Crye knocked them off. If anything, it is an interesting look a wide variety of concepts in Hyperstealth’s stable of over 8000 patterns and you may find just the pattern you need. Check it out for yourself.

And if you want to see the real thing, visit Crye Precision‘s booth #27007 at SHOT Show.

Kelty's new MultiCam bivy

Kelty is unveiling their new MultiCam bivy at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market next week in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is manufactured from a 70D Nylon outer shell with a proprietary waterproof/breathable laminate. To keep weight and cost down they are using a 70D nylon bottom with a 1.25 oz. waterproof coating. Additionally, the bivy features a hooped design using a delrin rod and has a footbox of 15 inches for boots-on use. It accommodates a sleeper of up to 6’ 9” and has a right hand zipper. It weighs in at just under 2 pounds. Finally, it is a Berry compliant MultiCam bivy.

Stop by booth #28027 and check out the bivy as well as a plethora of other tactical outdoor products.

Robinson Arms Sues Remington, Bushmaster, RRA, and Magpul

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Robinson Arms, manufacturers of the XCR have filed suit yesterday in US District Court for Utah against Remington, Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, and Magpul Industries based on alleged infringement of their patent (Multi-caliber ambidextrously controllable firearm #7,596,900) issued 6 October, 2009 and initially filed in August of 2003.

Specifically, the weapons alleged to have violated Robinson’s patent are the Remington/Bushmaster ACR, Magpul Masada/Massoud, and the RRA LAR-8. All of these weapons feature a magazine release that is manipulated by the trigger finger from within reach of the trigger guard as well as a similar bolt hold open device. We have read the complaint and it is fairly ambiguous as the which patent claims they allege were violated.

Both Bushmaster and Remington are part of the Freedom group, owned by Cerberus Capital Management. So for taking on Freedom Group I give them an “E” for Effort. Of note is the timing of the suit, just days before SHOT Show as well as Robinson’s announcement on their website that they would be exhibiting after all in a booth (#20034) shared with Serbu.
