In Memoriam – Dave Ruiz

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Over the weekend industry lost a visionary and I lost a friend. In fact, a lot of us lost a friend when Dave Ruiz passed away. There isn’t enough room on SSD for me to say all of the good things that need to be said about Dave. In an effort to do him justice I’ve asked his business partner Brian Abrams to prepare a eulogy. In the comments I invite you all to share your memories of Dave. We are truly diminished by his loss.

David L Ruiz

Sorrow fills our hearts this sad moment, a pain that cuts deep and personal. Dave has silently closed the door of life and has been deployed on yet another mission, somewhere where I know he will continue to make a difference. Our lives will surely be empty in the areas that he had brightened for us.

In one word, Dave is a man who gave. He gave so much to his family, friends, work and his country. Here was a life that demanded notice-a life that burned so that others’ paths were lit.

I have known Dave for twenty years…he was my business partner, but more importantly, he was my friend, a great one at that. He was a strategic thinker, a visionary who was smart, innovative and creative. He generously gave us his knowledge, his expertise, his skills and yes, his sarcastic humor which always kept things light.

Dave was deeply concerned as a Marine with improving the quality of their gear to enhance comfort and increase survivability and he was very keen to pursue innovation and look for solutions outside the box. He initiated and implemented much in this field during his tour of duty that can be still seen today.

Dave was living proof of how fine a person can be. He was a good boss to the people in his charge, a loving husband to his wife, and a devoted father and grandfather. He was also a good friend and colleague to many of us. He was sincere, earnest, humble and loyal. He had a great sense of humor and a gentle way about him. Dave was bright, logical(most of the time) and could converse on so many topics…business, technology, sports, family and religion.

In his career he worked with passion, integrity and energy. By his death, all that knew him will miss a highly intelligent and vibrant guy with a special charm of personality. Our sadness is lessened slightly with the comforting thought that we had the privilege to know him. Dave was my best friend and I’ll miss him dearly.

Soldier Reenlists at Tactical Tailor

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

US Army SPC Zoila Del Rocio Pesantez from Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s 513 Transportation Company reenlisted today at the Tactical Tailor factory. It’s where her mother works and it’s quite fitting to see a company founded by Veterans like TT host such a ceremony.

Congrats Specialist Pesantez. I remember my first reenlistment. I’m very proud of you. Here’s to many more!

911 on 9/11 – The Target

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

This target contains 79 hits; one for each NSW member we have lost in operations or training since 9/11/01. They were placed there by a retired SEAL firing a custom Remington 700 fitted with a Leupold optic from 911 yards. The Shooter began firing this morning at 0846:30, the same time that Flight 11 struck World Trade Center North Tower (One) in 2001. Winds began to pick up on Academi’s Range 19 so the shooter pressed through in order to finish mid-day before even higher winds came late in the afternoon.

This is just phase I. Next, the target will be sent to artist Ellwood T Risk to be turned into a unique piece of art. He is known for incorporating targets into some very amazing stuff. Make sure you take a look at his site.

The entire project, coined, “911 on 9/11” commemorates NSW’s fallen operators and support personnel by creating unique art to raise money and awareness for Warrior Wear which provides specialized clothing for wounded who require prosthesis.

Once finished this piece will be auctioned off at the upcoming Hold ’em for Heroes poker run sponsored by Wounded Wear.

Revision Batlskin ACH MPS Range of Motion and Weapon Sighting

When Revision’s Modular Protection Attachment System first hit the market a year ago, one of the thing the guys immediately commented on was weapon sighting. The concern was that you wouldn’t be able to fire your weapon and that range of motion would be inhibited by the hard armored mandible. To answer these questions Revision has produced these two videos. Granted, it’s not going to be perfect. The weapon wasn’t designed for a shooter with a huge jaw. But, they have accommodated weapon use in balancing protection and movement by suggesting a couple of TTPs. One will be familiar to guys who were in during the old days when we fired with pro masks. With the “angle” technique, you cant your weapon sight toward your eye. It’s actually a bit easier with a CCO than using standard iron sights on the carrying handle. The other technique, the so-called “index” is a concept many have adopted in shooting. It posits that if your finger pints at it, you’ll hit it, at least at close range. Revision suggests this for CQB distances of 10m or less.

American Kami Spork Pouch by OC Tactical

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

20120911-123705.jpg

OC Tactical has created the perfect storage companion for your American Kami Spork (or similar sized sports). Available in both Large and Small sizes this pouch is constructed with an outer layer of 2″ jacquard webbing and an inner layer of vinyl coated polyester. This is easy to clean and helps prevent the sharp edges or the spork from wearing through to the outside. Grommets located at the bottom on both the front and back side allow water and debris to drain out when cleaning and also increases airflow to keep the inside of the pouch dry. As far as I’m concerned, the only thing missing is MALICE clip compatibility.

911 on 9/11

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

20120911-085307.jpg

It’s a calm cool morning at Range 19 on Moyock, North Carolina’s Academi Training Center. At 0846:30, a shot rings out. 911 yards from the commerative target, the M118 round is fired from a custom built Remington 700. It strikes home at the exact time Flight 11 hit the World Trade Center North Tower (One) in 2001. This time is significant for today’s purpose as it symbolizes the moment that America and by extension its NSW forces realized we were under attack and began to go to war.

20120911-090345.jpg

In early August a retired SEAL friend approached me about a project he had under development. He envisioned an innovative fund raiser that would help turn 9/11 from a grief based day into a positive event to raise awareness and funds to support our Wounded Warriors. In particular, he wanted to support Wounded Wear which helps out our troops with prosthesis and other medical conditions that require specialized clothing.

20120911-094121.jpg

The plan was to adapt elements of today’s date as well as the sacrifices of Naval Special Warfare personnel into the event. Over the course of the day our shooter will accomplish 79 shots on target, one for each NSW member lost in action or training since 9/11. He will fire the rounds from a custom built Remington 700 built by a SEAL Sniper. Each shot will be from 911 yards. The expended brass will be organized into bags with the name of the NSW individual that the scoring impact was fired for and be presented to the relatives of the fallen. The name of fallen warrior that the shot commemorates will be annotated on the target beside the hit.

Once the firing is completed later today, the target will be sent to artist Ellwood T Risk to be turned into a unique piece of art. He is known for incorporating targets into some very amazing stuff. The Original will be auctioned off at the upcoming Hold ’em for Heroes poker run sponsored by Wounded Wear in order to raise money for that cause.

Look for additional details here on SSD about the original art, the auction, and the Hold ’em for Heroes Poker Run.
