You Never Know Where They’ll Show Up

Friday, November 29th, 2013

I spent last week in San Antonio visiting with Hodge Defense. Naturally, I had to take a little time to see the sights. One thing that is a must-see is the Menger Hotel Bar. It’s one of the recruiting sites for the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry aka Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. Apparently, TR would stand at the end of the bar and recruit the men, with enlistment documents being signed upstairs in the bar ‘s loft. The Menger is also the site of the first demonstration and sale of barbed wire in 1876 which ended the free range era.

If you’re ever in San Antonio, make sure you drop by the Menger Hotel. It’s right across the street from the Alamo.

5.11 Tactical Tac Tec Plate Carrier

Friday, November 29th, 2013

The Tac Tec Plate Carrier from 5.11 Tactical has been around for awhile now but we thought you might be interested in this video.

I’m well known as a “tactical snob” but I have to admit, 5.11 surprised me and has integrated quite a few features into this design and they’ve done it by doing it their own way. The project to create this carrier started a few years ago. Right up front, I’ll tell you I don’t own one and I don’t know what armor it is meant to accommodate. It is a one size fits all affair and will accommodate up to 10″x13″ plates. Also, it does not accommodate side plates. But, extendable drag handle intrigues me as it will allow the rescuer to stay more upright if not more agile while dragging the victim. I also like the bungee-style cummerbund to help accommodate additional sizes.

Available in Black, Sandstone and Tac OD.

PCP Ammunition Company Set To Release Limited Production Of .308 Polymer Cased Ammunition

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

This is an announcement from PCP Ammunition Company regarding an opportunity to test their .308 polymer cased ammunition so it ‘s written from their POV. Register at the link below for a special invitation only purchasing opportunity. We are honored that they have offered this to SSD readers first.

After several years of engineering research, development, testing, and productionplanning, PCP Ammunition is pleased to offer its .308 polymer cased ammunition to the commercial market. This is the first time in history that a ammunition manufacturer has offered high performance polymer cased rifle ammunition to the commercial market. Prior to this initial civilian release PCP Ammunition was recently awarded contracts with the US Government Department of Defense to deliver advanced lightweight polymer sub-sonic ammunition and an improved .50 caliber precision round.

We are offering this limited release of production to a select number of consumers. We are limiting the production initially to allow for user feedback that validates our test results. PCP Ammunition and certified third party testing facilities have performed thousands of tests on this product and we are confident in it’s safety and performance. The ammunition is loaded to SAAMI specifications. We are extremely interested in the feedback of our first group of civilian consumers. Although we have tested the ammunition in numerous weapon platforms, we have by no means tested them all.

Please use only in firearms that are in good condition and free of defects. If you have any questions about the compatibility of your firearm with our ammunition, please contact us prior to using it.

If you are interested in purchasing our initial production of polymer cased ammunition please register at the link below. If you are selected to participate in this initial release, you will be contacted with instructions to purchase.

Got Some Time To Kill on Thanksgiving? Give Nukemap A Whirl

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

Nuke Map is a GoogleMaps-based Nuclear effects planning tool. Developed by Alex Wellerstein and hosted on Restricted Data: The Nuclear Secrecy Blog, it allows you to visualize the effects of nuclear weapons on geographic areas you are familiar with. You select the location and weapon; Nukemap does the rest.

I chose a local area and a 100kt terrorist weapon. Looks like we’d lose Jungle Golf. Fortunately, the Dairy Queen would be spared, although I wouldn’t eat there for a few hundred years or so.

Dairy Queen is safe

Gallows humor aside, it’s an interesting look into a threat that many have forgotten. You can also try Nukemap 3D.
