I’m glad to hear the USAF stepped up to fill this glaring hole in USSOF capabilities–we’ve really suffered a dearth of units conducting SR all these years.

I don’t doubt for one minute that these people will be well trained but could someone please enlighten me as to why this role could not be filled by the dearth of other SF type operators across the military? Several roles with the USAF I totally get – PJs, JTAC but SR?

There was a major muscle movement to transition what is now referred to as Air Force Special Warfare to a standalone ground combat force. It was thwarted before the full transition and the only things that stuck were Weather to SR, AFSC code changes and the naming of AFSW which was based on a recruiting decision rather than an operational one.
