BELLEVUE, WA – TA Group, a Bellevue, WA-based investment firm, salutes the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 and Military Appreciation Month through its partnership with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. The Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team added TA Group’s veteran-powered brand, Combat Flip Flips, to the No. 5 Arrow Electronics car, driven by fan favorite, James Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe secured the pole position for the historic race in an emotional qualification that underscored his comeback from a life-threatening crash one year ago on the same track.

“We can identify with Hinch’s indomitable spirit and determination to overcome obstacles,” said former Army Ranger and Combat Flip Flops’ CEO/Co-founder, Matthew ‘Griff’ Griffin. “Making cool stuff in dangerous places is a lot like driving a race car…you need to go full throttle while anticipating every potential road block, and understanding when to have patience in the short-term to hit your long-range goals.”

Combat Flip Flops manufactures fashion and travel accessories including:

  • flip flops made in Bogota, Colombia, known for its high-end leathers and shoe construction (among other things);
  • sarongs, shemaghs and cashmere scarfs sewn and embroidered at a woman-owned factory in Kabul, Afghanistan where the purchase of one puts a woman in secondary school for up to a month;
  • hand-sewn and embroidered belts made by Afghan widows through a program that teaches sewing, fundamental literacy, math, and hygiene;
  • jewelry crafted from unexploded ordinance (UXO) dropped on Laos during the Vietnam War where each purchase clears 3 square meters of UXO; and
  • messenger bags and neckties sewn in Washington which helps keep Americans and veterans at work.
  • TA Group Chairman John Sercu commented, “Our sponsorship of the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Indy Car is based on mutual values of speed, innovation, technology, and a strong belief that giving back makes us better. The Indy 500 is a great time for us to say thanks to our country’s veterans and showcase the good we can do together.”

    U.S. Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office Evaluating New AeroVironment Tether Eye Tethered UAS for ISR and Security

    Monday, May 23rd, 2016

    AV_TetherEye_Med02_BW

  • Tether Eye developed with funding from CTTSO
  • Tether Eye can be deployed from fixed locations or mobile platforms
  • Delivers 24-hour continuous ISR at heights up to 150 feet above launch point
  • TAMPA, FL., At Special Operations Forces Industry Conference, May 23, 2016 – AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV), a world leader in unmanned aircraft systems, today announced the United States Combatting Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO) is evaluating the company’s new tethered unmanned aircraft system, named Tether Eye™, for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) and security applications. The CTTSO funded the development program under a US government contract.

    The AeroVironment Tether Eye unmanned aircraft system is designed to provide continuous, 24-hours-a-day surveillance at up to 150 feet above its launch point. Tether Eye deploys automatically from a small, weather-sealed, self-contained base station and ascends to a pre-determined hover altitude from where viewers of its video feed take advantage of its 360-degree field of view. The specially designed and ruggedized tether connecting Tether Eye to its base station provides continuous power, which, combined with AeroVironment’s track record of proven reliability, enables uninterrupted long-term operation.

    “Having the ability to deploy a ‘virtual observation tower’ at a moment’s notice above buildings and vehicles represents a game-changing capability for ISR and security operations that has the potential to save lives,” said Amanda Toman, Program Manager at the CTTSO. “We look forward to continuing our evaluation of Tether Eye’s capabilities with AeroVironment as a possible deployable capability across government facilities.”

    Current Tether Eye payloads include electro-optical (EO) and infrared (IR) cameras and AeroVironment’s encrypted Digital Data Link (DDL). The EO/IR camera provides both day and night imagery with full motion video transmitted directly to a Ground Control Station (GCS) that operates each platform within AeroVironment’s market-leading family of small UAS and Tactical Missile Systems. The Digital Data Link, integrated into each of AeroVironment’s platforms, provides secure communication with the unmanned aircraft system and communications relay with other platforms.

    “Tether Eye effectively complements our family of small unmanned aircraft systems by providing a valuable new capability – continuous ISR and security for buildings or stationary vehicles in defense, security and commercial applications,” said Kirk Flittie, AeroVironment vice president and general manager of its Unmanned Aircraft Systems business segment. “We intend to continue developing Tether Eye through to production and include it as a standard component of our product portfolio. Close communication with our initial customers will guide and inform future enhancements and production releases, resulting in another effective AeroVironment solution that helps our customers succeed.”

    SOFIC 2016 – MMI Outdoor Announces Re-Introduction Of Catoma Brand

    Friday, May 20th, 2016

    Armadillo_CatomaStudio1_IsoMain_s

    At SOFIC 2016, MMI Outdoor is re-introducing their Catoma Adventure Shelters brand as Catoma and extending the product line to include all products designed and manufactured under their watch. If you’re attending SOFIC, you can find Catoma at Booth #238 on the main floor. Thermal Concealment, unique load carriage products, and Depsoc360 camouflage will now fall under the Catoma brand in addition to the individual tents that have been a staple in the military shelter market for well over a decade. The Improved BedNet System family of products – now given the name “Burrow IBNS” because of its shape and function – is a pop-up bug screen and tent system sold to the US Military to the tune of over 300,000 units.

    Badger_CatomaStudio1_MainRolledAll_s

    The Catoma Adventure Shelters brand – under the MMI Outdoor parent company umbrella – was created in 1993 as a humble designer and importer of rugged tents to serve the brave firefighters on the front lines of wildland forest fires in the American West. The method of designing tents to serve the specific needs of elite users began there. Through growth over the last two decades, Catoma has become a leading provider of unique individual tents for the United States Armed Forces as well, founded on their willingness to design around the requests of their end users.

    With close proximity to Fort Benning for testing and input, this design and testing protocol naturally led to opportunities outside the tent market, leading MMI to begin Research and Development on a number of military projects over the last decade. Close collaboration with training elements under the guidance of Director of Sales, Martin Lambert (Former US Army) – and his extensive contact with the Special Operations community – led to the development of unique sniper and reconnaissance-focused thermal concealment products whose capabilities remain unmatched to date. A defense manufacturing and sales partnership with Granite Gear eventually led MMI to venture into designing their own unique load carriage solutions, leading to considerable expansion of in-house design capabilities. Near-daily indexing with end user groups for testing and evaluation has given MMI unique insight into their products and how they are used.

    Raider_CatomaStudio1_IsoMainRolled_s

    An aging tent line on the Catoma front and newfound capability to design and manufacture product led to the necessity to consolidate the efforts. A re-facing of the Catoma brand began with a focus on the rugged, tactical nature of the products coming from the design program at MMI. The new Catoma logo you see here is not just a cosmetic change, but one that better reflects the warrior heritage of the products themselves. “In developing the icon for Catoma, we kept coming back to imagery of tools and weapons used by warriors of the past: Spartan helmets, Native American spearheads, and battle axes of the Viking Age were all inspirations for the shape,” says Marketing Director Jake Pugh.

    An overhaul of existing products and the addition of products previously in development have resulted in a strong tactical and commercial line-up for the Catoma brand to begin its new chapter.

    Tactical Tailor – Pacific Northwest Nisqually Pack

    Thursday, May 19th, 2016

    This is a release from Tactical Tailor detailing their PNW Nisqually Pack.

    The Nisqually-callouts

    The Pacific Northwest Pack Series began as a project to fulfill a solicitation for a suite of SOCOM packs. Our designs for this solicitation were brought about with input from actual SOF soldiers who took these packs to the field throughout the design process and brought back their impressions and recommendations for improvements. We took their advice back to our designers who then continually refined the packs until they met the exacting standards of these elite soldiers.

    The PNW Nisqually pack is a patrol pack for heavy loads, ideal for wear with body armor in temperate locations. At 4.5 pounds, it’s the middle-weight member of the the PNW pack family, so it can carry a lot without being a burden. With a capacity of 4100 cubic inches, it can carry just about anything you might need in the field. The Nisqually incorporates many of the same features as the larger packs in the series, like the RTO and hydration pass throughs, side compression straps and reinforced carry handle. The internal attachment for the PRC-117G pouch, side pocket pass throughs and the external access to the main compartment hidden behind the main outside pocket are also present. Finally, like our other packs, the Nisqually is STRLLS and H harness compatible for airborne operations.

    Along with this new line of packs, we’ve also introduced upgrades to our traditional straps and belt in the form of our Low Profile and Low Profile Adjustable Super Straps and Ergo Super Belt. These new designs add even more comfort along with added functionality and adjustability. The Nisqually Pack is also available in a discounted kit form which includes the pack, our Fight Light MALICE Pack Frame, Low Profile Adjustable Super Straps and 34” Ergo Super Belt.

    The PNW Nisqually Patrol MALICE Pack starts at only $270.00.
