White Out Overwhites from Wild Things – The New Heat for the Snow

Thursday, August 27th, 2020

Travel to Vail, Colorado and you’ll find a 13’ tall ‘Ski Trooper’ monument honoring the formation of the Tenth Mountain Division. Decked out with skis and old-school Overwhites – the Ski Troopers of the Tenth, and the Finnish that inspired them, might be seen as founding fathers of Overwhites in the military.

And if the Tenth represented the introduction of Overwhites to the military, it could be said that 1969’s ‘Where Eagles Dare’ and an Overwhites clad Clint Eastwood was Hollywood’s introduction of Overwhites to the masses.

Fast-forward: times have changed, and so have White Out Overwhites®. Still a favorite with select military units, as well as Hollywood, Overwhites provide concealment when the snow flies – deployed, or on the screen.

When there’s a need for Overwhites today, military units, the brands and community that support them, as well as Hollywood, all call Wild Things:

New SOF Protective Mask Undergoing Testing at Dugway Proving Ground

Wednesday, June 17th, 2020

Personnel at the Combined Chemical Test Facility are preparing for the arrival of the Avon M53 protective mask in late May, developed with features to meet the requirements of Special Operations units.

Extensive testing is expected to begin in June at Dugway Proving Ground, the nation’s primary facility to test defenses against chemical and biological agents.

“The Avon M53 is highly regarded by users and agencies throughout the world due to its protective features,” said Test Officer Andrew Neafsey. “We will aggressively challenge this mask in order to verify the high level of performance required.”

The M53 is a variant of the currently issued Avon M50 mask, designed by the Department of Defense to meet the requirements of the Joint Services General Purpose Mask.

Like the M50, the M53 is designed to resist traditional chemical and biological warfare agents, select Toxic Industrial Materials (TIM), and particulates (including radioactive dust).

Among the features of the M53 variant is a wider field of vision, ballistic protection and scratch resistance of the eyescreen, and connection to either a canteen or hydration bladder for drinking.

The M53 is designed to work with most PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) without having to remove or change components. It can supply its wearer with filtered air from surroundings, tanks, air purifying respirator or rebreather.

The M53 is built by Avon Protection Systems of Cadillac, Michigan, a U.S. subsidiary of Avon Rubber of the United Kingdom that has been making respirators and protective masks since the 1920s.

Happy 12th Anniversary To Us

Thursday, May 21st, 2020

Soldier Systems Daily; it all started with a redeye flight from San Diego to Norfolk and a copy of Wired magazine. I had wanted to start writing again and there was this article on the rivalry between tech blogs Gizmodo and Endgadget. I learned that a blog could be about something tangible and decided to use the format. Not long after, SSD was born. It started as a means to keep me off the streets at night, but within a year became a full time job. I’m so grateful to be able to do something I love.

Earlier this week we hit our 12th year of existence, publishing a daily website. Naturally, I missed the anniversary. So here we are, patting ourselves on the back a few days late. How ironic considering how much I sweat over always being on time.

Yeah, I’ve outlasted most of the competition. But the truth is, we wouldn’t exist without our loyal readers and fantastic advertisers. Many of them are small business owners, feeling the pinch of these tough times like everyone else. Please support them when you get a chance and keep reading; daily, it’s in the name.

LCI Partners with Six Non-Profits to Produce PPE for the US Air Force

Wednesday, May 6th, 2020

Project could deliver more than 576,000 face masks to Air Force bases across the country

DURHAM, N.C., May 6, 2020 – LCI, one of the largest employers of people who are blind in America, has been tasked with distributing over 576,000 face masks to the US Air Force as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Six other non-profits are responsible for manufacturing the face masks.

“Employees who are blind are continuously working in our manufacturing centers to deliver quality products that will help to lessen the burden on our essential employees and ease fears in our community, around the corner and across the nation,” said LCI President, Jeffrey Hawting. “The LCI team is extremely proud to take part in delivering materials that will go directly to the men and women of the U.S. Air Force.”

LCI is responsible for the purchase, storage, and delivery of personal protective equipment (PPE) for the US Air Force and has partnered with six additional non-profits for the production of the masks. Blind Industries and Services of Maryland in Halethorpe, Md., Industries of the Blind in Greensboro, N.C., IFB Solutions in Winston-Salem, N.C, Alphapointe in Kansas City, Mo., Southeastern Kentucky Rehabilitation Industries, Inc. (SEKRI) in Corbin, Ky. and Puerto Rico Industries for the Blind in Mayagüez, P.R. are responsible for the production of the masks.

National Industries for the Blind (NIB), the nation’s largest employment resource for people who are blind, will coordinate the project, which will help create and sustain U.S.-based jobs for people who are blind. More than 576,000 masks could be produced by people who are blind for the U.S. Air Force.

Headquartered in Durham, N.C., LCI has been deemed an essential workplace since the onset of the stay-at-home order in North Carolina. LCI Employees, blind and sighted, have continued to produce essential products in their manufacturing and distribution centers such make-to-order medical kits, plastic flatware, facial tissue and kitting of Federal Medical Stations in efforts to alleviate and support the pandemic relief efforts. LCI regularly produces products for the military under the AbilityOne® such as mattresses, locks, shredders, chemical light sticks, and a broad variety of essential office and breakroom products.

“When NIB reached out to us about supplying masks for the bases, we were honored to answer the call,” said DuWayne Gilbertson, vice president, business development at LCI. “As our country navigates its way through unchartered territory in the face of COVID-19, we feel it’s extremely important to help protect those who protect us and keep us safe every day.”

The first shipment of the personal protective equipment is scheduled to reach Air Force bases in mid-May.
