Alexander Arms ‘Alexa’ AR-15 At The Range

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

Alexander Arms is a company that is best known for the .50 Beowulf cartridge developed by the company’s founder, Bill Alexander. They also manufacture parts, components, AR-15-style uppers, and full rifles for their proprietary cartridge in addition to the 6.5 Grendel (also co-developed by Alexander) and .17 HMR cartridges. Only relatively recently have they expanded their product line to include the NATO standard 5.56 cartridge.

We were recently invited out to C2 Shooting Center to try out the new Alexander Arms 5.56 ‘Alexa’ AR-15. The ‘Alexa’ features a fluted, chrome lined, mil-s-11595 steel cold hammer forged barrel, 16″, 1:7 twist. The upper is a flat top with extended feed ramps, and an M-16 style carrier group, chrome lined bores with fully staked gas key. The model at the range had the MK10 vented hand guard, made of G10 composite with corrosion resistant threaded inserts spaced to attach 3-inch Picatinny rail sections. Additional components included military specification stock extension tubes, an M4-style stock, and a military style trigger. The rifle was also outfitted with Manta rail covers and grip sleeves as well as an ACOG.

The Editor of SSD first fired the weapon at 50 yards in the prone position.

The left target resulted from using an unsupported rifle. The right target resulted from the rifle supported with a GPS.LE Grip Pod. As you can see, the Grip Pod was very successful in assisting with stabilizing what is an already accurate weapon.

The Editor also practiced a couple of standing-to-prone transition drills, deploying a separate GPS.LE with light rail to stabilize the rifle while prone.

While our time with the ‘Alexa’ was brief, Alexander Arms seems to have a winner on their hands. It’s a solid, accurate rifle with a crisp trigger pull that makes a fine addition to Alexander Arms’ product list.

THE Rifle

Monday, February 24th, 2014

This may well be the most significant individual weapon in US Small Arms History.

THE Rifle

While THE rifle no longer exists exactly as it did on that day on that target, more of it is present in this photograph than anywhere else. You’re looking at history here ladies and gentlemen. Thanks to LAV for sharing it with us.

Colt Is Buying LWRC! *Yawn

Friday, February 21st, 2014

Since it’s being reported elsewhere I’ll share what has been floating around for some time, Colt is supposedly buying LWRC. Nobody has any real details yet because it hasn’t actually happened…yet. So if somebody tells you they have facts, they don’t. Until the ink is dry, it’s all just a rumor.

Tactical-Life.com & Panteao Productions Present – LMT DMR Stock and SLK8 Receiver

Friday, February 14th, 2014

Tactical-Life.com and Panteao Productions got some excellent video coverage during SHOT Show and we thought it would be great to share it with our readers here at SSD. This video introduces the Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT) DMR Stock and SLK8 Receiver.

The new LMT DMR AR buttstock released during SHOT Show is designed for use with a mil-spec carbine extension tube, offering three separate position adjustments. In addition, the cheek weld height and the length of pull can both be adjusted to 45 different positions. Intended for 3-gun competitions, the slick side SLK8 receiver (think LM8 with no rails) offers a stainless steel 5R cut-rifled barrel (available in 16″ and 20″) with a 1-in-7.5-inch twist rate, an ambidextrous magazine release, a two-stage match trigger and Ergo grip.

LWRCI’s 50 State Compliant Rifle Demonstrator

Monday, January 20th, 2014

At SHOT Show, LWRCI showed me an interesting new carbine demonstrator. It looks like their standard IC-style carbine with a 10 round magazine peeking out from the mag well. But then I noticed that there is no magazine release.

photo 1

Turns out, it features a 10 round, spring loaded, fixed magazine, you grasp the bottom of the magazine and pull until the bullet-shaped loading gate aligns. Then you can feed ammunition into the magazine to top it off. When you are done, you release the magazine and it automatically closes under spring pressure.

photo 2

This is still a concept demonstrator and not yet ready for primetime but it’s good to see industry developing rifles for every segment of the market; even those who live in areas with restrictive gun laws. When the latest wave of legislation was proposed last year, I knew that someone would analyze the laws and begin to work on technologies that accommodate them, yet allow the user to continually top off the magazine and in a for factor we all know and love, the Stoner AR platform.

I was so impressed with the concept that, during SHOT Show, I mentioned this rifle when asked by others what I had seen that was cool. Many in industry were intrigued with the idea and supported the notion. In fact, I was so struck by the rifle that I uncharacteristically shot and posted a quick video on the demonstrator to the SSD Facebook page. However, I was quite dismayed by the reaction from the readers. I noticed industry fans liked the rifle. Many, disappointingly, were outraged by LWRCI’s development of the rifle which they felt was an act of capitulation to laws they don’t agree with. Some mentioned that LWRCI should spend their money on legal action, opposing prohibitive gun legislation. Apparently, they don’t realize how much money the firearms industry pours into organizations that lobby for your gun rights.

I cannot explain this upside down attitude that would rather leave citizens without guns, than offer them something that complies with these laws. The attitude reminds of a spoiled child who won’t accept something unless they get it the way they want it. I find it to be a defeatist attitude that eschews resistance via innovation in favoring hunkering down awaiting change via legislation or the court system, or worse yet, abandoning areas with restrictive gun laws altogether. Naturally, the issue must be confronted via the middle path, with a balance of adaption during periods of prohibition combined with legislative and legal actions including education, lobbying, and court challenges.

Whether you agree with their LWRCI’s actions on a philosophical level, you have to admit that it is an innovative approach and I hope that it spurs more innovation industry-wide.

SHOT Show – NRA Booth Features Hodge Defense

Friday, January 17th, 2014

I’m walking along minding my own business at SHOT Show when I run smack into the NRA booth. And when I look up, what do I see but a Hodge Defense AU Mod 1.
