OR Summer Market – Sierra Designs

Last year Sierra Designs introduced the Pack Trench, which a long rain coat that offers a from the bottom zip flap that allows you to wear a pack waist belt and lay the front flap of the coat over the belt. It’s a great design and I’ve been wearing one when I need a longer trench-style coat for about 6 months.

At Summer Market, Sierra Designs introduced the next generation in lightweight rainwear.

It consists of a cagoule-style top with the same waist belt flap of the trench and a set of rain chaps. When paired with a longer jacket like this cagoule, chaps are a great idea. They eliminate the crotch area that rips and causes heat buildup. Made from 40D coated fabric, these are a great lightweight alternative to many rain suits.

New US Army PT Uniforms Revealed

The US Army has recently revealed the new Army Physical Fitness Uniform (APFU), which will be available service-wide beginning in October 2015. The design, which is based on Soldier feedback, consists of 34 individual changes to the form, fit, function, and look of the APFU. The trunks, for example, feature a lighter, less stiff construction when compared to the current IPFU trunks, along with internal four-way stretch panel, a bigger key pocket, and a “convenient and secure ID card pouch.”

The APFU consists of five parts: jacket, pants, trunks/shorts, short-sleeve shirt, and long-sleeve shirt. The ensemble is modular, although it will ultimately be up to the platoon sergeants to determine the appropriate combination of components to wear.

The APFU will come in two types: Clothing Bag and Optional, visually identical, with the only difference being the use of different materials in their make. The Optional APFU will be available sometime between October and December of this year when it arrives in Army military clothing sales stores. The Clothing Bag issue variant will be issued starting April to June 2015, with Reserve, National Guard, and Senior ROTC receiving the APFU July to August 2015. The mandatory wear date will go into effect approximately October 2017, about three years after the introduction of the APFU.

Kitanica’s new LWV (Lightweight Vented) Long Sleeve is constructed from a combination of 4.5 oz. poly/cotton ripstop and antimicrobial moisture managing A.M.Y./Sorbtek Mesh, the later of which is located behind/under the arm as well as the gusseted back for breathability. Storage options include left and right angled and pleated front chest pockets, with pen tubes on the left pocket. The elbows feature double layer reinforcement, and the garment is bar-tacked at the stress points and features double needle top-stitching.

Beyond Clothing – L7 Linebacker Jacket

Brand new for 2014, Beyond Clothing’s S7 Linebacker Jacket is a generously oversized outerlayer which provides a quick, shedable layer to stay warm in cold, static environments. Designed for wearing over kit, the Linebacker can quickly be removed and stowed into a pack. I tried one on at Outdoor Retailer and I’m impressed. I’ve used/checked out these types of coats going back to the days of using diving deck jackets for the same purpose. This one is well thought out and the reinforced rear hem is awesome. Nonskid eats many of the other jackets for lunch and their backs are often shredded. If you use a Linebacker-style parka for transit in aircraft, boats, vehicles or just hanging around fully kitted up in inclement weather, check this one out.
